  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News from Cool Lights

If you didn't use the minus green filters included with the LED, then you definitely did get green in your image.

I'm glad you pointed this out Matt. I find this forum one of the most professional I've experienced and really appreciate the real world feedback as I'm making decisions on a new LED package.

Everyone produces differently and I'm one that prefers less filters and more CC, I guess because it's how I'm more comfortable with film and photography. I could see the green shift immediately in Martin's first screen grab and wondered if that was after the - 1/4. More importantly from an output standpoint I'm curious as to the stop loss using the -1/4 on everything vs maintaining full output and correcting in post.

Ironically one of my new clients (I own a marketing firm) is a top US LED developer of drivers, controllers and finished fixtures. We were actually having a discussion of CRI in a business meeting yesterday (ever have one of them with a room full of engineers?...yikes). They were talking like, well, engineers, and I was talking like a film maker. It was interesting <g> and another reason I respect Richard's ability to straddle both worlds.

There's little to no drop off in output when you drop a 1/4 minus green in.

All LEDs have this small spike in the green spectrum. It is easily correctable with the filters that Richard provides with the LED600.

Coincidentally, I've used $8,000 Arrisun HMIs that needed the same correction.

Thank you everyone for the interesting feedback on these products. I've been monitoring this thread for some time now.

I'm about to order a few LED and Fluo fixtures from Coollights, but I was also looking for a bigger fluo fixture, like this one from Flolight which uses 10 - 54 Watt T5 lamps :
http://www.flolight.com/fluorescent-lighting/fb-2500.html
Has anybody seen and tried this one ? How does it compare to the Coollights models ? Light quality ? Build quality ?

Also, regarding the LED 600, are there 1/2 CTO and 1/4 CTO filters available ? They only mention a Full CTO filter...

Thanks,
Nils.

I got 2 of these off ebay a while ago and they are built ok, but they are HEAVY
and finding a case has been difficult. these are not small crew lights.

they pack quite a punch but its pretty much uncontrolled from the source without barn doors or anything so flagging is needed. nice for lighting green screen

Just wanted to say thanks to Richard and to put in a quick good word: two days after placing my order my Cl-LED256 arrived (only paid for standard ground delivery). The build quality is great and the value of the kit is incredible.

Best,
-Matt

Three quick questions for Richard about the 256 LED spot kit
- does that also come with the -1/4 -1/2 green filters?
- what is it equivalent watt in a tungsten light? is it also 250watt?
- which battery plate option is better? (or more popular)

Thanks !

Martin already answered on the filters (thanks!), but yes they do come.

Yes 250w to 300w on equivalent.

Battery plates work a bit different on the 256 because of its size. Sony NP-F970 is better in my opinion. Comes in a larger size than the Panasonic as well. No V or AB types for this model as it is physically too small to fit such a plate on it. But just like with the 600 you can also power the unit through the 4 pin XLR input.

Richard, I'd like to buy your "speedbox" softbox for the LED600, but I also wanted to buy one of your softbox flo kits. Is the "speedbox" for the flo the same one for the LED600 or are they different?

Yes they are different. The opening in the back of the softbox is a different size for both LED 600 and CL-SFT1P models so had to have two different ones for that.

quick question re: LED600

why is the light from the flood softer than the spot? is their a diffusion coating on the leds? If so is their light loss and what diffusion filter would it be equiv to? cheers

Hi Richard
I bought 4 600's a little over a year ago (2 spots, 2 floods). They have been great. Can you tell me if the filters were included when I made the purchase? They were not included. If not, how much would they be to add?
