  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New york times - EPIC / RED ONE

Truly awesome. I had to watch these a couple times today.

You know how tidal waves start very small and then build into this massive, overpowering force? That to me is what's happening with the Epic.

It was quiet for a long time but now it's starting to pick up momentum and I think before long it's going to be what could be the biggest technological force in the film industry.

I would like to see this in BD quality. The compression issues of the web version are ugly.
Let's compile the cinema moments/people/archetypes the clips might allude to:
Bardem: Pacino Scarface/Gangster film ?
Franco: Narcistic Smooth talker ?
Portman: Gilda/Dangerous Liaisons ?
Eisenberg: ?
Moretz: ?
Damon: ? Music sounds like Prokofiev
Douglas: ?
Lawrence: Brigitte Helm in Metropolis, touch of Psycho
Rapace: ?
Cassel: Fred Astaire
Mackie: Sergio Leone/Morricone/Hitchcock ?
Duvall: ?
Manville: ?
Swinton: Dreyer Jeanne d'Arc/Vanessa Redgrave

Black and White is sooooo nice..... the pictures look amazing

Noticed a bunch of people asking if this was Red One MX footage or Epic footage. Thats gotta make the One MX people feel pretty damn good about their investment.
Exactly! A Mysterium-X Red One is, besides Epic, still THE best imager in the business. The only downsides in most situations are camera size & weight, and framerate limitations. Given they share the same sensor it's not a stretch to understand why they look so close in quality.

That said, naturally I'm selling my Red One as I'm Stage 2 Epic! :D

To the videos.... love the looks! Very film-like and "romantic" in feel :) Nice work!

Cheers from Japan,

Paul

Beautiful! I like Solve Sundsbo's description of visual poetry. Well put and well done sir.

Nice to see another sample of a DSMCs used in the wild, were R1/EPIC used for the stills portion as well? stills taken from motion?

The actual content itself seemed pretty lacking, maybe its this fast paced internet-video world that's affecting my judgement, but its really not very interesting to watch even the best of actors act in an empty environment with no context/story (and no sound?) for a minute-long take. All I could see was the mostly muddy black and white and what appeared to be focus and shutter issues. Oh yeah and the web compression. If anything I think the slow motion took away from the performances. Given no context and no sound etc, I'd at least like to see the raw performance, but then they had to mess with the timing...

It really felt like a still shoot with some video added on. Some of the stills were compelling, but i dont think they worked as well as 1+ min videos. They seemed lit for stills, which didnt seem to work well for several of the actors who moved quite a bit during their performances.

It's a homage to cinema, cinematography, acting...

Just take a deep breath and sit back and enjoy music and the figurative situations. No need for colors and sound, stories only need movement to be told. :biggrin5:

I dont know if it was playback or not, but some of the shutter speeds/motion blur that was in the shots looked off, or "experimented with"...anybody else get that?

Probably the takes you perceive as "experimented with" were shot at high FPS and then ramped in post.

A wonderful demonstration of the subtlety of tone the cameras can resolve, though the shutter speed was uncomfortable to my sensibilities on the running scene. I understand the frantic intention, but it became distracting. IMHO the performances were a very mixed bag, not entirely supported by the score. Stripping away dialogue and context from the actors left them exposed in a way that not all of them dealt with equally.

Totally agreed. also did anyone else see that shift in colors? it goes from greenish to grey sometimes? intentionally?

you guys are way too funny.. you guys have analyzed and pixel-peeped this (horribly compressed and black and white) footage more closely then anything else...

This is one of those things you need to just relax.. chill out... and enjoy.

We all get very spoiled looking at hi-res Red footage all day long. Think it makes us lose perspective quite a bit. Fortunately with these, I was looking more at the mood they created, the performances, and the lighting. Pixel peeping was far down the list. Although, admittedly I was curious which ones were R1 and which ones were Epic. Just a mild curiosity. :-)
