  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK..

Download is working now, the file is now a gzip (.gz) archive and that saves just a few bytes. I haven't been able to determine if the 2GB was a factor or not (it's not supposed to be). There are some file ID settings that are hosed on the server and QT / .mov is one of them. I don't have time to troubleshoot them right now with a hosting tech, but will do so in the morning. The file and server are remote to me, I am downloading the file right now via HTTP and it seems to be working. I'm getting about 400KB/sec, so speed is acceptable, but not great. I'm hoping it can sustain at least 150KB/s once people start going after it.

Anyway, go for it if you would like. However, I can't guarantee that the file is good. I haven't got confirmation yet from Jarred if the file size the server reports is good and I won't know if it's good until later tonight when I can play the file. I have to take off in a bit and don't think I'll be around when it finishes.

Edit-> www.mummydust.com/red/CTL_Trailer.mov.gz ...Right click or ctrl/cmd click to save the file. Download at your own risk... the file may not play if it's not complete.
Did not take.

Got it this time, the ending didn't seem to flow... Picture is gorgeous.

I'm getting an error 2048 "Couldn't open the file CTL_Trailer.mov because it is not a file that QuickTime understands."

I'm on Vista ...

1. No need to re-download the file. Just rename the CTL_Trailer.mov.mov to CTL_Trailer.mov.gz end extract.

2. The codec that has been used is the apch "Prores" so there is no hope for anyone running Windows to playback the movie. Only Mac users with the FCP installed will be able to see it. I hope that's not the intention...

For Windows users I would suggest a WMV advanced profile (VC-1) encode at average 10Mbit and maximum quality. That would be a good sample.
(I've done some HD tests and I found that x264 and Nero Recode's h264 are not comparable to WMV advanced profile). You can use Premiere Pro 2 for the encode.

For universal compatibility, an On2's Flix Pro encoding to Flash might be the best option.
There's a SteamingMedia evaluation of Microsoft's latest, and their conclusion seems to be:
"So, clearly there's little reason to switch from Flash or QuickTime to WMV. On the other hand, the improvements in quality you can achieve by using the latest WMV codecs make switching to them a no-brainer. As long as you pay attention to the details, your audience will thank you."

Ironically, they felt the ON2 Flash encoding was slightly better than Apple's H264 encoding using Compressor. Who'd have thunk?
Then again, if you just up the data rate, all of these codecs would look pristine.

wmv, simply the worst.

That's what I thought too (long ago), until recently, when I tried to encode Full HD 1080p@60fps with footage that contained subtle color gradients.

There was banding all over the place and/or noise etc at 10-16Mbit maximum bitrate (each codec's maximum) of x264, Xvid, Mainconcept h264 (that couldn't even encode to 60p although it was supposed to) and Nero Digital AVC (h264).
With WMV advanced profile at 10Mbit average, two pass, quality at max, encode was of the highest quality, and no banding at all (although a slow process).
I'm sure a better, professional (and prohibitively expensive) h264 encoder would provide very good results...

FYI: To all of those who were waiting for confirmation before downloading. The file is 100% intact. If you have FCS2 / ProRes on your Mac, this 2K version is be-a-utiful! :)

Anyone want to put up a mirror? I'll have a mirror in the morning. Sorry to those of you who have had a dropped download. The poor server seems to get the hiccups when too many people are downloading. I'm working on that, hopefully the mirror will be a little better.

I have not tried that particular comparison; your results sound surprising.
I'm not talking about the delivery of ultimate quality, I am refering to the every day functionality, as in downloading a file on the web. WMV is always rebuffering when you simply want to replay or back up a few frames..drives me crazy.

That's a huge "if"...

Anyway, is there a way of watching this without buying Final Cut Pro or something? Is there a trial that contains the Prores codec? Other than PC, I have a G4 laptop I could use to watch it -even as a slide show it would be something...

That particular comparison, or the combination of 60fps, 1080p and sublte color gradients revealed the weaknesses of the other formats.
Files on the web are usually 24fps. Now try tripple that (almost) to 60p at the same quality and you'll see. Initially I thought I found the best encoder (Mainconcept h264) because it gave me very good results, but then I found out it was converting 60p to 30p internally with double frames while keeping the 60fps rate at the encoded video! Go figure...

I also thought I would have to buy XP OS @64bit to have access to WMV advanced profile but it was possible with Premiere Pro 2.0. Only (sad) limitation is 10Mbit but fortunately its average not maximum... Probably a more professional version of WMV encoder would allow higher bit rates.

EDIT: Poi Boy, the functionality you're talking about is just a choice of keyframe interval. You can select that at the encoder. But I'm not talking about streaming live. That's a whole different subject.

Damn.. I was downloading, got about 500MB into it when it just knocked me out.. Fudge.. Brook, how big is the difference? What kind of monitor are you watching on?

You are lucky... I have downloaded it twice (completely) and I haven't see it! :)
(no Prores for PCs)

Can you borrow an Apple w/ FCP2?

Hell, I'd grab a harddrive like an ipod and sneak into an apple store to watch on a big 30" - You know for sure they have FCP2 installed on their machines

Now that's a good idea!
But I can't go today, I'd have to wait 'till Monday... except if the RED team will come with a solution until then...
