Are you kidding? Take a look at this recent poll: link. :innocent:

i was speaking of -users- not -reservation- holders.
our customers would appreciate the link, and very few of them are editors.

But not >90% of the users in here.

I think the only way to play back ProRes (at this point anyway) is to get a Mac.

exactly.

and the producers/distribution/finance/3d/elder DPs etc we would like to send a link will open the file and say: It doesn´t work! But its a Quicktime, they work on my computer!

I think it would be a good idea to have a crossplatform file asap.

Don´t get me wrong, FCP and AP are excellent product for their price, but in 2/4k mastering houses, you will rather find clipsters/flames/lustres/DS Nitris/Quantel/Speedgrade/Assimilate Scratch - and last time i looked, there is -one- Quicktime HD codec they couldn´t playback: Prores.

Furthermore, all FCP3,4,5 users are excluded as well, as, iirc, one needs 6 to playback Prores.

So are all 3D Animators who don´t have FCP on their 3ds max/Xsi etc workstations, all compositors running fusion, nuke etc, all cel-art/animators running Animo etc, all DPs running speedgrade on set or pre-viz 3d, all game designer running the most popular engines and even my mom.

No rant - just a marketing consideration.

Jeff, Can't we download yet? It's been two hours!

Not quite yet... Jarred is still uploading to the server via FTP. It's only a 1Mbps up pipe via remote FTP. 2GB @ 1Mbps = 4.5 hours roughly.

I actually meant it facetiously since with 2GB I didn't think you'd be anywhere close! Sounds like we may have access tonight?

I don't know the exact file size, but I'd say we're about half way there.

Man, I must be messed up because I'm thinking of running out and buying a Macbook Pro just to watch this ProRes footage.

I need a therapist quick.

You ARE messed up. Here, come lie on my couch. Just start at the beginning. When did you first hear about Red...? Oh... services must be paid for at the end of the session. And we're out of time.

Hm, ok, >90% of the users out there are on windows or linux, so how do they playback that file?

unfotunatly that windows model from 5 years ago doesnt really hold up anymore.. even just from visitors to this site its almost 50-50.

I think the first thing I'm going to do, other than enjoy the CTL trailer in full 2K glory on my 30" display, is burn it to an HD-DVD and watch it on a 71" DLP. Hehe.

I don't have any suggestions for you guys who don't have a Mac with FCS2... Not sure what RED's policy is or will be on transcoding this thing. They already did make the 1K quicktime available.

Hehe. I've just agreed to host for now. We'll have to see what's OK with Jarred.

Speaking of hosting, I'll set up another mirror or two by this evening... But I'll probably need some help from others if the demand is really high. Any volunteers? I'm not too worried about over-running my bandwidth allowed for the moth, but if enough people are trying to download at the same time, it could slow to a crawl....

Hi Jarred,

congrats on the delivery.

Yeah, on this site. However, out there in productionland - its not anywhere near that figure. And here, on reduser.net, we a rather convinced.

Its the nay-sayers, sceptical customers, the producers with their fancy blue-ray sony vaio i would like to send that link.

Besides, leaving out minimum 50% of the users isn´t exactly the no platform-preference approach :)

don´t get this wrong - i don´t want to rant or complain, i only recommend to publish a quicktime/avi/mpg actually useable for not only half of the folks here and a minority in the production offices - especially as even apple doesn´t publish their HD content in prores online for good reasons.

Noe, c'mon Jeff...

Please, do a 264 quicktime or a wmv. I'm begging you!

that would be a re-encode from the re-encode of an en-code.
that will be the mayority of views in 2k for most people worldwide.

i wouldn´t publish it that way, but make a master from the redcode to a format which not only 800.000 user (according to apple, and only if all fcp users have updated to version 6) could view.
Even if that means that non fcp-6 users will have to wait.

you only get one first impression.

I really think that a proper H264 1080p encode can make the clip justice. And everyone would be able to watch it.
i agree - but better without 3hrd generations of datareduction.
anyhow - all the good people at red deserve to have a party today, so i will rest my case.
