  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

somebody please re-encode this to a h264 or something. I think the bulk of the community would appreciate it

thanks

That's a huge "if"...

Anyway, is there a way of watching this without buying Final Cut Pro or something? Is there a trial that contains the Prores codec? Other than PC, I have a G4 laptop I could use to watch it -even as a slide show it would be something...

No. Apple, unlike Avid, does not offer a free codec. They suck. Irritatingly, some of the lowest-of-the-low-end finishing houses (eg the ones using FCP) seem to assume everyone has a pirate copy of FCS2 or something. This leads to problems such as:
"Yeah, that sequence we need urgently to print to film ASAP? We forgot to say we need it in ProRes format"
...to which I happily reply "I can't make you it in ProRes format. You're getting a stack of SGIs. Deal with it."

At the other end of the spectrum, Jeff, you totally rock for hosting this. Thank you!

By the way, as someone who has had a lot of graphics encoded by Apple to H.264 for their HD trailers, I agree, yes it has really horrible banding / quantization problems in the reds and blues.

Microsoft has better quality but they lack one even more important thing: the ability to go through stuff frame by frame with the arrow keys! Killer feature! And screw their emphasis on streaming. We want to download. Apple was right. There, I said it ;)

OK..

Download is working now, the file is now a gzip (.gz) archive and that saves just a few bytes. I haven't been able to determine if the 2GB was a factor or not (it's not supposed to be). There are some file ID settings that are hosed on the server and QT / .mov is one of them. I don't have time to troubleshoot them right now with a hosting tech, but will do so in the morning. The file and server are remote to me, I am downloading the file right now via HTTP and it seems to be working. I'm getting about 400KB/sec, so speed is acceptable, but not great. I'm hoping it can sustain at least 150KB/s once people start going after it.

Anyway, go for it if you would like. However, I can't guarantee that the file is good. I haven't got confirmation yet from Jarred if the file size the server reports is good and I won't know if it's good until later tonight when I can play the file. I have to take off in a bit and don't think I'll be around when it finishes.

Edit-> www.mummydust.com/red/CTL_Trailer.mov.gz ...Right click or ctrl/cmd click to save the file. Download at your own risk... the file may not play if it's not complete.

Thanks Jeff! I'm getting about 550kb/s here. Should be watching it on my 30" within an hour......

Thanks for hosting that Jeff. Getting 640 Mb right now. Really excited to see it big again!

how big is the difference? What kind of monitor are you watching on?

FWIW, I'm watching on a Dell 30"... The prores version obviously has 4X the resolution, a good bit less compression artifacting and more stable color/gamma. Here's a tease:

OH MY *@#$%&*!!!!

Thanks Jeff, this absolutely ROCKS!

Thanks also to Jarred and RED for the 2K ProRes.
Now I have to clean the drool out of my keyboard!

Jarred, could you please post a 4k tiff of a frame showing the sky?

That ability, that you, me and all appreciate so much is the perfect example of high level stupidity in the design of software (and not only software), especially from big companies.
Because, Bruce, this is just a very simple player feature, NOT an encoding format limitation!!!
For example, if you playback a WMV file by using the free "Media Player Classic" (NOT Windows media player), you can pause it by pressing "Space" and then go frame-by-frame forward with the Right Arrow (you can't go backwards with the Left, but thats because the programmers didn't think that it was important)!!!

shitballs.. everytime i try and download this file it only gets me a portion of it.. i let it download all night and it only gave me 1.2 gigs worth... failed to open..

i'm going to try again using jeff's mirror..

Same here. I've tried 4 times from the original link, and when the download showed as complete there was max 1.5GB.

Trying again now from Jeff's mirror.

Use at least a trial edition of some download manager.
In Windows I downloaded it twice in 28 minutes each (1.25MB/sec)

I'm looking at the server logs and it seems most downloads that get dropped are being labeled as a client disconnect. I would definitely recommend a download manager for larger files like this.

Agreed, and I used to be a programmer.

Try Windows Media Player from Windows 3.1 - not only does it have buttons for both ways, but with a secret key combo you an pop up a console windows and specify that it play at any fractional speed, etc.

The reason you can't go backwards quickly is that the WM codecs use heavy temporal compression (you know, storing the difference between frames...). That's maybe why the programmers / marketing people took it out - people were complaining it was too slow? Nothing that a little caching couldn't solve.

Hey guys,

Eesh... you leave the boards for 8 hours and look at all the goodies you miss!

I'm downloading the file now, but I'm getting under 100KB/s from the mirror so it's going to take about 5 hours. Once it's here, I'll throw up a mirror myself to ease some of the strain. I don't even have FCP 5.2 here yet - bummer. Maybe this will be the motivation I need to pick it up? :)
