  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

My 18-35/1.8 arrived today. Had it on camera for a few minutes, first impressions:

- nice build quality
- zoom works the wrong way ;)
- slight vignetting at 18mm/1.8 and 5k, have to look into that deeper because i noticed it only at the right side
- looks like its sharp, even at 1.8
- RED's aperture control hangs if you're at 1.8 and press the button that opens the iris -> aperture information is gone until you re-attach the lens (thats reproduceable)

Can you test the vignetting for the 18mm in 5K HD mode please?

Can you test the vignetting for the 18mm in 5K HD mode please?
I have a Scarlet, there is no 5kHD, but if i enable a 16:9 framing guide at 5k it looks like the vignetting is outside that 16:9-area.

Just Got mine this evening.

Already Loving this lens.

No Vignetting on 5KWS
Some minimal vignetting on 5KFF, and 5K2:1 at 18mm - Extremely negligible by 20mm, fairly imperceptible by 21mm.

I would be SUUUUPER thrilled with a cine version of this with expanded focus travel and gearing. While I'm dreaming I'd take a 24-70 f1.8 and a 70-200 f2 Art series lens as well.

When they say ART - they mean it, I feel like this is a very affordable, daily driver Piece of ART.

Will try to put some samples up when I have a bit of time. Got mine from Samy's Camera in Los Angeles.

Very minimal vignetting at 18mm on 5KHD...not super noticeable at least on mine, seems pretty gone by 19mm

Dan looking forward to your opinion on this lens.

Have it on pre-order at BH.

Samples will only show coverage.
There are tons of samples online that show this lens extremely high image quality.
The main issue is the control of iris and, most importantly- the focus.

Really Digging this lens. Magenta flares that I find pretty cool. A lot of modern SLR optics lack "feeling" I think this lens has a really good feeling. Will try to post some R3Ds later.

I'd love to see how this looks at 3k... that'd make it effectively what, ~36-70 FOV? Pretty good range if it actually pegs at t2 (which, in my opinion, is more useable than the upcoming 16mm f2.0 by Samyang/Rokinon.)

Jacek, I meant video samples...
I've already seen all the photo samples...
You can't judge breathing and image shift from a pic...
Image shift will vary from sample to sample.
There should be none while focusing.
And other than quick snaps I would not recommend zooming during recording.
Breathing- well, have you seen the 25-250 HR Angie? -a cine lens?

I have also reproduced the Aperture Hang scenario.

If you open the aperture setting on the touch screen, it shows a range of 1.7 to 16

When the camera tries to drive the lens to f/1.7 you can acutally see it open the iris further than 1.8, which apparently causes a fault in the len's controller and it hangs.

Aperture control, autofocus, and data readout all stop. Re-seating the lens re-initializes the len's onboard controller.

I tried this on my 7D and everything works as expected.

And here is a quick little parafocal test on the Sigma 18-35 at 1.8

(The sun came out from behind a cloud exactly as I did this, so it is a bit blown out.)

anyone tried this on an epic yet? really curious. i know my tokina 11-16 is mostly useable at 5k, but how is this for coverage? and how does the color compare to zeiss lenses. this looks a little on the cool side which would be great.
