  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Scarlet frame rates

If you just look at the data rates of the current options, the one with the highest rate is QHD at 30 fps. Assuming 16 bit per pixel that would make 498.000.000 B/s before compression. If I calculate right, that would put 3k at 50fps within reach and possibly 1080p at 96 as well. Compression may be another bottle neck, but 3k@50fps should be very close to the computational requirement of QHD@30fps. Aside from that I'd be very surprised to see other significant improvements in frame rates as speced. HDR is another question.
4K at 30fps is the highest current rate.

OK, cheap AVCHD camcorders, which is more resource intensve then wavelet, or you're saying image compression takes more resources then RC 5K A/D conversion?
Not saying the A/D conversion takes less resources, just pointing out that saying cell phones easily compress video isn't an apples to apples comparison. It's my understanding that wavelet compression/decompression takes much more resources than AVCHD. You can try encoding something to a JPEG2000 sequence and an H.264/MPEG-4 AVC file on your computer and see which one goes closer to realtime.

4K at 30fps is the highest current rate.

Right you are. Just checked.

That would appear to be significantly higher data rate than both 3K@50 and 2k@96, Actually that would be the same data rate as 2K@120. So, if that is still difficult, it must be for some other reason than just the raw throughput.

I second that, Per.

Because this would also calculate to 480fps@1K ;)

If it's just pure data rate math, 5K@18fps, 3K@50fps and 2K@120fps would be doable. I assume it isn't that simple ;)
Maybe one day we will still be able to get these or similar rates with certain compression ratios (w/out dragon)

One can dream right? hehe

In a GOD sake tell me WHERE we can use ONE K footage? Even with 120FPS. It is a funny joke like VGA video on top notch DSLR'S.

JIM please discard everything below 3K. Forever.

Green screen compositing of 1K elements into your 2-4k footage.

Green screen a seperate motion element and lay it on top. Think slow motion elements layered on top of "normal" motion-mixed time in the same frame!

That's my take, or of course stuff intended for 720p compressed web/vimeo/mobile targets.

most important to me personaly is 4k HDRX, my reasoning:

Jim is such an inspiring advocate of 4k being the new standard, and constantly rallying us RED advocates to not to accept anything less, and spread this message... but if you want to use this great tool, you are forced to sacrifice this 4k cinematic standard that is stressed as so important. i dont like having to make this quality sacrifice for a tool that should be a useful integrated part of shooting RED 4k, not a resort one may feel guilty to turn to.

Its an unnescisary catch 22; someone already suggested a brilliant data-rate-saving alogrithm idea, with mock-up tests for hdrx on scarlet footage.. and im sure the brilliant RED technitians are even more versed to acomplish this.

I dont feel im particulary "looking a gift horse in the mouth" because after all, a full shooting scarlet kit is really not a "cheap" option, (mine cost more than a very basic EPIC kit) and with a host of 4k cameras to arrive this year, i feel Scarlet should maintain its superior philosophical integrity, that so many trust and buy in to.

I have faith RED will do the right thing when its ready.

All i want is 4,5 k WS

I was wondering if there are currently non RED employed programmers (read independent, red hackers) out there trying to write new firmware and enabling higher frame rates? Usually a camera manufacturer leaves a big margin between what the hardware of its camera is capable of doing and what its software allows it to do. This is done among other reasons for safety purposes, so that the camera will not toast itself. If you are willing to test Scarlet's breaking point you might possibly get a lot of extra performance out of her. You'd obviously void the warranty, but for some users that might be worth the risk. I'd be curious to know if this kind of approach has been tried with Scarlet so far.

As much as 5k 24fps would be awesome, I don't think they will add it until Dragon. The Scarlet is 1/4 the price of the Epic (well, now closer to 1/3), and the only real differences are 5k and high speed options. I don't think they will add 5k and close the gap between the two cameras even more. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if they did though, haha.

4k 24fps HDR would be awesome though, and I think that might be coming soon. More aspect ratio choices would be great as well.

2K 120 on Red One MX is totally fine with a good lense - but come on guys, a Scarlet is not expensive - it's not reasonable to make these requests. It's like asking, "How come my $800 a month apartment doesn't have a view of Central Park? I want a park view, and I don't want to pay for it!"

Will never happen - and you don't want to meet Jim's lawyers - and the chips are not the same - the weight is not exactly the same.

UH - Scarlet at 4K HD is pretty close to "real" 4K. Most of these so-called 4K new cameras do not even quite resolve 1080p, and all are actually 4K HD.

Your whining is nauseating. Why did you spend so much on shoulder rigs or whatever? You should have bought an Epic. Your own fault, me thinks.

For those of us who bought Epics this is a business - if we had to rent them at Scarlet prices we would be screwed, I mean totally screwed. You can't disagree, and tell me this is all about art, because we're talking about big cash investments here. At that level it's not about art at all, it's about paying rent and feeding families.

Jim will not screw his best customers just because you want something worth 35K for 10K

People are making wish lists, not demands. Everyone that bought a Scarlet-X knew (or should've known) the specs it was sold with. I'll be pleasantly surprised if those specs are improved later on, but I won't mind if they aren't.

guys scarlet is scarlet and epic is epic
why scarlet is not capable of higher framerates? because it is not epic! half of the processing power...u knew it the day you bought it, the rest are just dreams
it is about diversify products.....
