  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

Good question Ian. Lim

I also thought about this. I think I've read before that new/future debayering techniques could improve some old footage. After all the RAW is just compressing and recording raw values from the sensor right ?

Would we amazing if those blue channel improvement could apply to previous R3D images but since they have a custom camera built and not just a new REDAlert I imagine the RAW is somehow modified with this new color science...

This improvement is so significant! Fantastic! My prayer has been answered. Way to go Red!

So here is some good news...

The new camera build only matters for on-set monitoring and the accuracy of white balance in the metadata. Nothing in the new build actually effects the pixels recorded in the RAW. Which also means you can use the new color science on old footage.

Please be aware that these changes are NOT in REDCINE or the SDK yet, so be careful...

Tell all your friends.

Thought so :) Very glad for this improvement.

5000k correction

5000k correction

Are we looking at not having to factor a correction to 5000k when lighting via tungsten be it an 80C/D etc or correcting lamps with variants of CTB?

Which also means that Graeme's new magic is going to make all your old footage look even better.

It's one of the sometimes forgotten beauties of REDCODE RAW...

Back to what build? Build 16? Pre-build 16 all the way back to September 07? :-)

To a 5000k native sensor ( RED ONE ) ...a 5000k light source will always look best .

Tungsten now just looks a whole lot better than it did before.

I'm just rendering one older "available light" footage shot @ f/1.2 in Albertina Film Museum Cafe Vienna.

Give it a try and you tell us... :-)

Jim

dang it! my flight leaves in a few hours for a week trip, so I haven't the time, but after I get back (next Sat) can I get the Redalert to try processing my old footage? I didn't get the Alpha because my camera is out on long term rental

We hope to have a beta version posted for everyone by the time you get back. This is a really important advancement for our program.

Safe travels...

Jim

Yes, it should help all footage ever shot on a RED. Indeed, I bet if I doug up some old frankie footage, it would help that too. Yes, this is one of the key benefits of recording REDCODE RAW.
