  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

We had Amy Vincent, ASC in on Friday doing some tests for an upcoming RED feature under all tungsten lighting, and they gave this new alpha build (B18 3.7.2) a go, but didn't see enough of a difference between it and B17 3.4.1 in a quick REDAlert! session or live on the monitor (Panasonic 1760). Hoping I can take some more time early this next week to put this build through its paces with what we're learning from the rest of you on here.
Hey Brad - just to clear up any confusion, this is not the B18 beta build that is being discussed, but a new alpha build that is not on general release. If you wanted to test this, Jarred would be the person to contact...

On a more general note:
Our camera's still out on a rental as well - I'm dying to get into testing this, it looks great....

If no-one's done it by the time I get to do some tests (maybe Weds or so), I'll take up the challenge of some A/B underexposed tungsten shots between this and B18, as well as some "real world" shots away from the charts...

Cheers,
Dom.

okay guys- I was gonna wait until Monday and rent a color meter- but I really am dying to see a side by side comparison. Just shot them and will be posting in the next few minutes. brb
any suggestions on where to post the .r3d files?

used 2 tungstens in these- without meters the only thing I could note is the very noticeable difference in the LCD. right away, much much better.
These are cropped & scaled from 4k...

Did you adjust these differently? I see more shadow detail and better highlight roll offs in alpha 18 if not.

50mm
scaled/cropped
did an autowhite in RA (using the whites of the eyes per graeme's suggestion)
shot at 5000K, I will shoot it again at 3200K this evening...

way to screw up the forum formatting Evin :) heh heh the shot is worth it though :)

Lower noise, especially under tungsten light, more accurate colors, especially with REC709 output to a monitor.

Graeme

It's great to see RED addressing this area. Thank you much.

Yea, my bad.:hanged: but it really didn't come across as good smaller.
And it looks great on a 30" cinema display:couch:

The Seth Rogan shot on the right is definitely the "wow" moment i was looking for! thanks!

What was the ISO?

Evin looks like the leader of the stud patrol... :-)

The noise is less (especially in the blue channel) AND the color is much more accurate at different color temperatures (particularly under 4000K).

Graeme's magic.

Dominic, the actual B18 is v3.6.4, the "alpha" build being discussed here seem so be build 18 v3.7.2, so he was actually testing the new alpha build.

Raul, could you try color bancing your shots at 3200°K ? I think that's where you should see the improvements. Also, maybe try pushing it a bit, like 500 ISO and more, to see how it reacts.

Thanks !:)

ha ha ha I wonder how many times a day Evin gets that :)

If you only knew!

The tragic thing is I'm most likely gonna end up on a set with him one of these days and it's gonna be like that scene from the movie when the guy finally meets his dopelganger and they do the mirror/mime gag until one of them screws up a move and the audience cracks up hysterically....
...except no one will laugh:crying:

Yes, you should really see the difference balancing white to white, rather than leaving tungsten with a warm image. (Handy hint: if you don't have something grey in shot to balance on, try the picker on the whites of an eyeball - it works great).
