  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New MoVI

I think it is an optional accessory right?

At the LA Mōvi event yesterday with Motion State and Mōvi Rentals Inc. it sounded like it's a 3 motor driver.

From my online impression from earlier I thought it was a single motor driver...

Either way... free motor driver ;)

Just need to buy the Mōvi controller or something to remote control?

Personally I'm hoping for RTmotion integration.

Oh, another great thing about the Pro!

High mode to low mode without rebalancing the rig ! It auto flips to maintain top-up orientation so fast for mode changes... SO nice.

The movi pro has a 3 motor driver built in.

This works with Mōvi controller, and Heden or Redrock motors (maybe some other motors too like Chrosziel or other?)

Do they have a controller for single operator use? A thumb wheel or trigger would be nice.

I can confirm they have a FIZ controller built into the Movi Pro. I saw it at the Freefly demo over the weekend. They do not have a thumb wheel or trigger for single operator use, that was confirmed last week during one of their Youtube live sessions.

Did they give any hints as to whether or not they will develop this?

They also do not have power cords for various cameras (ie BlackMagic) and it isn't clear if they will or not. When I had a Helix, Letus made me a custom power cord which was pretty nice of them :)

There have been subtle hints made publicly that a separate hand unit is in development. Beyond that it is not clear if/when that will happen.

Personally I think the system is a lot stronger if we could use third party controllers with the system. I think a Freefly branded one would be fine, as long as it's excellent, but I would also like the option of only having one hand controller when switching setups.

Does anyone know if the Movi red thin LCD cable will work with the 7" touch? It is marketed as made for the 4.7 touch. I know it will fit, but has anyone actually used it for the 7"?

There are no flexible cables that work with the 7" monitor, unless you are running old firmware on your camera

What about this one ?

Would like to know if that works.

Indeed, I'd rather have them make the Movi Pro compatible with existing hand units (RT Motion hand unit would definitely be cool !) and put their time and energy in developing gear that doesn't already exist. There are already some very good and decently priced wireless follow focus units out there.
Many people already have existing controllers from other brands, and I'm sure most of them would rather use the ones they already own rather than have to buy a new one, again.

Why do you say this? I have two thin flexible cables for my 7" made by media blackout, but they are not long enough for gimbal. Are you saying there's a problem with thin cables and the 7 inch touch monitor with a longer cable run?

There was a firmware update sometime in the last year or so, after which the 7" monitor no longer worked with flexible cables. As far as I know, the problem persists across brands of cables with similar qualities.

No pb with mediablackout thin cable and 7" monitor.

On gimball too!

By the way, will refund my brand new m15 for this new Movi, red integration is fantastic + all the features. Hope they can provide enough pieces for the launch.

You can get away with a standard thickness of extended cable if you're careful to loop it and hang it with enough range - it's even less of a bother with the new Pro gimbal. I even ran one on the M10 before there were any thin cables to use.

IMO though, it's better to use a light weight monitor - especially a daylight-viewable one. Best I know of is the Transvideo Starlite. With the foolcontrol system and other accessories, it's not so crucial to have a touch interface anymore. Also 7 inches is overkill for gimbal usage - that's more of a size for Steadicam where the monitor is well away from your head.

I agree with Brett Harrison.

We have a custom lightweight cable loom and use the Transvideo Starlight as well. It is an excellent solution.

We usually run the sidekick on the side of the camera to access menu etc.

I will agree with Brett. Smaller monitors are better for gimbal use and lighter , I my self used nothing more than a 7 inch on steadicam. Its not only seeing the frame big, you also need to concentrate in the frame and not find your self looking around the frame , and with bigger monitors I always had this probem. They also always in the way. For gimbal use 5-6 inch is more than enough.

Agree on the display size (smaller)

However, my Paralinx died on set and had to share a AC-7 for focus.

That would not have been fun with my DP-4.
