  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

Thanks John

I have NO idea what Unbuffered and Registered actually means, but Registered just sound a whole lot better

I'm sure someone more technical than me can chime in here and explain the difference and which one is best - Jeff?

Scott

i know ECC memory stood for error correcting something... and that it was "more pro"....maybe that has something to do with the new terms? proness/reliability? i suppose i could google it but prefer to speculate instead :)

Thanks for the reply and info Jeff.
So I ordered the machine yesterday-6 Core/256GB PCIe/D700's... and now looking to start the RAM upgrade.
I would have maxed it out with 64GB but reading some of your other posts Jeff I was wondering if this is in fact the best option. You mentioned something about a 3x rule?

That's the Mac Pro 4,1 and 5,1 (2009 and 2010~2012) Mac Pro systems. They use a triple-channel memory system for best performance. RAM in the new Mac Pro cylinder is quad-channel. It performs best with all 4 slots filled and absolutely requires it for many configurations. In a nutshell, you want 4 of the same module at all times. So your valid configurations are 4x4GB for 16 total, 4x8GB for 32, 4x16GB for 64… If you go to 32GB modules, which are available, we have to drop down to 1333MHz RAM due to what is actually on the market right now.

Does the amount of cores you have depend on how you much RAM you should configure you're system with?

Absolutely… Well, kinda, here's the best way to explain it: More cores means you can do more work and handle more data, so you can more easily use more RAM when you have more cores. That said, 64GB isn't a huge amount of RAM these days. In fact, on a nMP with 8 or more cores firing away on 4K+ video frames, 64GB can even at times be a little small.

Also what is the difference between Registered and Unbuffered RAM?-is there any difference performance wise and what would be the best for the system I ordered as there is a €50 difference in the 2 on Crucials European Store.
As I said I just assumed the more RAM the better but to be honest I'm new to setting up a pro workstation so just want to make sure I'm configuring it the best way with the budget I have.

Unbuffered RAM has no additional buffering or error correction control (ECC) abilities. It's easier to make and available at faster speeds, it's often cheaper. Registered memory has buffered ECC functionality that helps ensure data integrity and more consistent transactions. The Mac Pro / Xeon platform, requires registered memory in most situations. I don't think the new Mac Pro will start up without it.

Here is the best options I can find price wise at the moment(again even though they are both Crucial brands,Im not sure if they are the same?)

http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/mac-pro-%28late-2013%29/CT5019226

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GEC3EDI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
(cheaper for me to buy on .com site as opposed to .co.uk)

Any help appreciated....thanks guys.

Those are both the proper modules, most likely the same part. Crucial gives different part numbers to the same item depending on how they are packaged. The one at Amazon is packaged for retail sale. The ones direct from Crucial will ship in anti-static bags surrounded in bubble wrap.

Thanks a lot Jeff, explained to perfection....I hope at least somebody is paying you well for your wealth of knowledge;)

Anyone using the Blackmagic Design Ultrastudio 4K unit?

I'm looking at capture/playback options for our nMP and this looks like a good option.

Another option is the AJA Io 4K unit but this is more expensive.

For 4K output and monitoring, what is everyone using for the nMP?

Best wishes

Scott

Hey Scott, I'm using the ultra studio 4k on my nMP. Using it with resolve, finalcutx and nuke. Works fantastic!! Haven't used it for capture, only playback,

Just finished two spots in Premiere and FCX under 10.9.3 and all seems to be ok so far. Areca's wake up properly, no audio issues and after QC the renders seem fine. I haven't tried Resolve yet and do not have any Cuda Drivers installed. I did do the iTunes update.

Once upon a time the black magic capture cards had an issue with SNS Evo. It took dozens of hours with the SNS guys but we killed the bug, but not before the production bought an AJA Kona card they couldn't return to finish the job. So either should work now fairly well... But you can very likely find bugs along the way and end up changing cards like I had to...so do extensive tests before your return policy has lapsed to really check your workflows. In my case they happened to already own the black magic solution, which made the choice easy, but they certainly weren't thrilled when the darn thing couldn't run without crashing during live capture, and then anteing up 2 grand for the competitor...

Apple just seeded a beta OSX 10.9.4 release this morning. Curiously fast jump to the next build. Installing on my 8-core now…

I think they've written off the 10.9.3 as an oops and are moving forward.

Jeff-- Also saw the 10.9.4 & thought I'd try it (looking for fixes to the 10.9.3 mess) Probably a big mistake.
16GB, 8 core, D700 nMP.
Booted from Pegasus2 RAID & applied update ... almost.
Update went to an all black screen after almost finishing (no room left in update thermometer). Waited .. mouse could move cursor, but nothing happened. Powercycled.
and did fsck -f on coming back up. There were orphaned files & directories. Ran fsck -f again & this second time, it was clean. Good.
Did ^D to exit & continue to login screen. Got there & logged in. Launched Resolve 10.1.5. Loaded a clip. Then tried a simple color correction -- seg fault.

Anyone else having fun with 10.9.4 ? Could be a subtle hardware problem. Or that I have only 16GB.

Updated without any problems myself....don't have anything to report yet....it will be interesting if the sleep/wake issues somewhat fixed with the later 10.9.3 betas only to reappear in 10.9.3 final....or maybe that is just an issue with my 4k 24" dell?
will do some work in fcpx tomorrow and report back

Update installed fine and is running here. Seems alright so far. Have not dove into Resolve. Premiere is "fine." Or the same as it's always been on this system… I would categorize that is moderately flakey and I'm not really putting much emphasis or effort into testing that until Adobe releases their update we've all been waiting for.

Sleep/ Wake was fixed for Thunderbolt 2 devices and most monitors in the later 10.9.3 betas. The last couple 10.9.3 seeds, as well as the release, seem to have reintroduced issues with my 24" Dell. Not sure why waking up a monitor is such a problem, but it apparently has something to do with the MST support. At least that's the story I've been told. FWIW, it wakes every time in DP 1.1 mode.

FCPX seems fine, but it's fine under 10.9.3 and 10.9.2. Seems obvious that Apple tests their own software and hardware...

Ok....so it's not just me....I was able to sometimes get half my screen back....how hard is it to wake a monitor? Especially one of 3?4? Featured in the update?
just got a cintiq...can't wait to see all the problems!

My new 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 arrived to day, i purchased a ram upgrade from OWC and a strange a problem occurred, so with the apple ram all 4 ram slots are recognised - with the owc ram slot 2 was always empty.
i have tried moving them round and that did no resolve it as slot 2 always remained empty so the ram is fine ( i think)

has anyone else had this problem?

i have contacted apple and they are going to replace the machine as it was faulty on arrival but i wonder if its a OWC RAM problem.

If the Apple RAM worked the machine wasnt exactly faulty upon arrival.

I'd try replacing the OWC RAM before sending the Mac Pro back and committing to the resulting several-week delay to get another.

that's what i thought but it was apple's idea and they are letting me keep the machine until a new one arrives. they said it will only take 5 working days

That means the timings of the new ram are not working with the current profiles/detection programmed into Apple's firmware. The issue will likely remain with the new system unless signal attenuation was causing the timing issue on the current nMPro.
