  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

Have you got a suggestion on what to? Surely owc would have been aware of a problem if it was a apple firmware problem with the ram, I canny be the only one to by the 64gig upgrade

I bought mine 64GB from Crucial with no issues.

The overall production of the ram OWC is using is likely compatible with the timing detection the nMPro has mapped right now. What you have to understand is ram is not 100% identical to each an every stick for that model. Dimm/Memory manufacturers change the chip manufacturer used from 1 production run to the next based on market pricing for those chips in the east. Micron chips on memory sticks will not work with Samsung chips sticks. If OWC sends you 2 sticks from 2 different production runs then they often wont work. Another difference has to do with grade level of the chips used. Some chips test ideal with latency settings planned for that model where as others do not test as well. This is due to slight variances in the chips themselves due to how far away from the center of the die the chips were cut from since memory chip die's are made with a gas construction method. The chips closest to the center are the best grade. The farther away from the center, the lower the grade. This is why subtle signal attenuation or voltage variances on the system boards can effect 1 module but not the others. Chances are 1 stick barely made the cut in testing but wont work with other ram modules from that same production run. It's also possible who ever programmed the spd on that memory stick made an error to. I have seen that before many times. What I can tell you for sure is that the current nMPro is fine if all of Apple's ram detects. The reason their ram is more expensive is they only use higher grade chips. Bob is also correct about Crucial. Crucial Reg Dimm's work fine as well.

i have just got a refund from OWC and purchased the ram from crucial instead so fingers crossed all will be fine:)

thanks for the help everyone!!

Lots of people using RAM from OWC -- Samsung modules most of the time and from what I have seen for their nMP kits. Could be a timing issue like Eric said, and I'm suspecting that may be the case, or other registering or callback issue, and it's probably caused by a faulty module. Is not going to matter in this case which slot the faulty module is in, you're going to see the same result with the secondary slot. Possibly an outright failure if the faulty module is in slot 1, but not necessarily so. Chances are the Crucial kit will be fine if the Apple RAM works fine. If OWC sent you a replacement RAM kit, it would probably be fine too… OWC actually does test their RAM before they put their stickers on it and send it out. But sometimes things happen and bad ones slip through the cracks.

There still is a chance it's a problem with the Mac itself, but I'm betting it's the RAM.

so got the new ram from crucial Jeff and still no joy, it must be the ram slot :( just so strange that it works with the apple ram fine

i'm pretty shocked how SHIT!!!! 10.9.3 is and how apple is not rushing to fix it!
the machine came pre installed with it and i hadn't seen all the negative issues annoyingly, rarrrr apple needs to get this sorted asap as its crippled the machine

having to work on my macbook pro

If the slot was the problem then no ram would work in the slot. The fact the Apple ram works means the slot is not the issue. You have something else going on. Normally when this is the case on PC that means one of the pins in the CPU socket are not making contact ie bent or out of position. You are dealing with 2 different densities here which means the timings are radically different between the Apple ram and the 16GB Reg sticks whether Crucial or OWC. The signal may be just out of range for the 16GB modules but still in range for the lower density Apple ram. These are the complications with the ram controller in the CPU. BTW did you have the Power from the wall pulled when you placed the Crucial ram in or after? You need to have done that to reset the firmware from the timings detected and profiled from the previous ram.

thanks Eric,

What would you suggest then?

i would say the machine has to be replaced.

as regards to the power cable being pulled out when changing ram you have to do that to get the Mac Pro cover off , i have also followed the apple smc and pram reset with no success

Do both an SMC reset and a PRAM reset on the Mac and see what happens. EDIT> Seems you have done that. Hmmm...

Well, it could be the slot. And seems that way if the reset didn't clear it and you're seeing the problem with two different sets of RAM. I guess you can see what happens when the replacement Mac shows up.

Apple knows all about the 10.9.3 F-Up. They have already seeded the first 10.9.4 beta. It seems that some people are having more issues with 10.9.3 than others. The only app that's having fits here is Resolve, so I'm glad I don't run it much on the Mac. Premiere is flakey, but has always been flakey on the nMP. FCPX, RC-X and pretty much everything else seems to work fine. I'm seeing a lot of complaints about Dropbox and a few other third-party services that I don't really use. And where Apple screwed up is that they released a version of the OS that never circulated as a pre-release seed! The final beta seed they had was actually pretty good, other than it still having some sleep issues with some monitors -- which seemed fixed in earlier seeds. (wtf?) Instead of releasing that seed, or circulating another before launching it, they just pulled out a whole new version and shipped it. So weird.

Well if you already reset the firmware then the CPU socket is the next isolation. That would mean a replacement nMPro since removing the CPU voids the warranty if done by the end user.

Thank you! Yeah it's strange, the part no. from that Crucial site link (CT5019230) doesn't show up in a B&H search.

But the part number at B&H for the 64gb kit (which is just 2x of their 32gb kits - CT2K16G3R186DM) brings this up on Crucial - http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2k16g3r186dm. Looks like the same specs and price as your link, just different part no. and no "100% Compatible" stamp. Probably worth inquiring to them further.

Does anyone know the performance of a 6-core and NMP d700 with epic 5k compression 5:1 and dragon 6k 5:1? how to get fps playback in half good, half and full res premium? and how many fps get the render on a timeline full hd? all reported the use of davinci version 10.1.3 and later (with sdk gpu).
Hopefully I'd be curious to know also the result of 8 cores and 12 cores with the d700.
Thanks
