  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro Announced at WWDC! - It's OFFICIAL!

Do you know if they're still demanding OSX compatibility with all TB accessories? I know of at least one company that really wants to release a TB accessory but since they don't have OSX drivers they can't sell it.

Not a requirement anymore. That lapsed when the Apple exclusive on Thunderbolt expired. Then again, to make a TB accessory and not supply Apple drivers seems a bit foolish, IMO. Considering 95% of all Thunderbolt ports on existing systems are on Macs...

On the flip side of things, I know of a few companies who can't seem to get their shit together and release Windows software for the TB products. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Promise. Pegasus works awesome on Windows. Too bad there's no way to monitor or manage it... Same for Linux. Although, given the approximate 95% statistic, which I read somewhere recently, I see the lack of motivation.

I figure, since they didn't mention MacBook Pros yesterday, that an update is, minimum 1 month out, more likely 3-4 months out. Think they'll have TB2 in there? This Mid-2010 MBP is long in the tooth, but I've been waiting on "the next version" for about 3 months now. I'll be getting it either way, but damn will I be happy to wait a few more months if it's got TB2 installed.

I will be surprised if they launch without TB2 on the new MBP. I'm betting on August or September for that one, but I think it's up to Intel and their release cycle. I also need a Mac Mini server for an automation and media serving setup, but I'm trying to hold out for an update with Hawell and TB2.

While we're talking about updates to other systems, I have to say I was very disappointed with the MB Air update. I'd love an 11 inch Air for a lot of things, but the lack of a retina screen with some real pixels is frustrating. Even if it just had a 1080p screen I'd probably get it... grumble, grumble...

The PCIe-based storage in the New 2013 Mac Pro will likely exceed 800 MB/s Read and Write!

"MacBook Air's PCIe-Based Flash Storage Approaches 800 MB/s Read and Write - Mac Rumors"

Well Apple already says it's in excess of 1250MB/s. The MBP Retina's flash can already sustain 735MB/s reads and 380MB/s writes, so I don't think this is a real stretch here....

From the horse's mouth - Phil did state at the keynote that the new storage will have 1.25GB/s reads and 1GB/s writes. I don't think he pulled that out of his hat...

EDIT: The article you have linked talks about the flash storage for the new MacBook Air - not the same storage as in the Mac Pro...

I wanna wait for the Mac Pros price before I settle for an Air, but Haswell has me very close to jumping on it...but I know I'm better if I wait for MBP Haswell...

Yes, I watched the same 5 minute presentation you and Jeff did. Plug a bunch of stuff into this and then 'gently spin it around'. Let me know how that works out for you. ;)

Just like the multiple RAID boxes / other boxes that sit under my desk the 'front' will always face away from me… Who says the connectors are on the back anyway? As far as I'm concerned, since the thing is round, the connectors are on the right side which perfectly faces where I need them to be.

Jeff & Peter,

Specs quoted are not real-world results. I was just pointing out that we can expect "actual" results "in excess" of actual performance being measured on the MacBook Air PCIe flash storage. Not 800MB/Sec. Max

Haha - I have a hard time understanding how a physically normal adult with an IQ above 50 will have a hard time making this work just fine. That said, if this is the worst fate that befalls this machine, that it's "inconvenient" to plug things in, I think that'll be OK. LOL

It looks nice, it's small, it's a great new design for the desktop, but can I modulate it? Can I modify it for my needs, seems not. Can I change the graphics to the superior Cuda nVidia line? Seems not... so why would I want to spend probably tripple the amount for a well built PC with a performance on par?

If it's cheap, which apple-stuff never is, I do not see any other reason but to show off your desktop for clients... I have no need for that.

CUDA is superior now, but who can say if it will still be in 4-6 months?

Thunderbolt 2 is a nice concept, but what if it takes as long as Thunderbolt 1 (i.e 2 years) to get some decent TB2 peripherals ? For sound insulation purposes I put my Mac in a cabinet behind me which would require a 12-15 ft cable.... I know someday I'll be able to house my Mac at my neighbours with a 100ft optical TB cable...but what about today?

Optical thunderbolt cables are already available on Amazon. They just cost close to $1000.

Another thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the SSD appears to be of the new industry standard M.2 format factor. This should make upgrades relatively cheap and it also means Apple has made great strides in SSD tech. No SSD on the market comes close to meeting the specs they put out.

Apple & Adobe are in the midst of a decade + long feud. It wouldn't surprise me if the move to AMD was at least was discussed as having the ancillary benefit of sticking it to Adobe a little.

Has anyone ever thought that maybe Apple has actually talked to Adobe and BMD? There are a few months until this is released and, unbelieveable to some, things tend to evolve over time.

While TB3 would've been better, neither need to be in the computer.

Too many users need Pro speed but less or more card slots making fixed slot number solutions inadequate and hard drives are certainly antiquated and at best served from an external chassis.

I dunno what pisses me off more, no drive bays or no PCI slots...

You got that right. Reading a few lines of code is the best sleep aid that I know of!

Never mind that the arstech article is full of BS assumptions and outright wrong info (such as their claim that the GPUs are soldered to the mainframe)...
I love it when people use as a reference articles written online by just about anyone. There seems to be this growing attitude that anything posted online must be true...

*gasp* You mean it's not??

Keep in mind that this is FIRST generation. Think of the evolution of the iPhone, iPod Touch, MacBook Air and so on. Apple will refine and improve and third party vendors and developers will innovate to accommodate any constraints. Give it a little time. This is a big deal. Apple could have just walked away.
