  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

That's 5k wallpaper ladies...

Pretty awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's 5k wallpaper ladies...
9to5mac.com :
The rationale is that the resolution is exactly twice that of the current-generation iMac, therefore suggesting a Retina iMac with double the resolution. The problem with this argument is that 5120×2880 pixel wallpaper images are not new to Mavericks. In fact, Apple has used them as far back as 2011, probably just for future-proofing purposes. There’s really no downside to including images which will display nicely on any larger monitors that come along …

Interesting. Be that as it may, I'm just acknowledging the shoot 5k to display 4k idea. It is familiar to you, yes? ;-)

I thought the threads bashing FCP-X were pretty insane. Now I am really blown away. I always thought the REDuser community was forward thinking, creative, used to thinking out of the box, ready to adapt new technologies when they indicate a path forward to better places.

Not so much, I guess... :-(

And I have never seen so much trashing over so much assumed "knowledge" without so much as waiting to find out what is true and what is not.

Soooooo true...

This is as old as the Macintosh. If you want to play naive Terry, get thyself to The New School. :-)

I will always love and respect FCP7 due to all the things i did with...
Same for my actual Mac Pro
BUT
I'm faster and happier with FCX and its features
I'll be faster and happier with the new Mac Pro and its specs.

Yep. I am looking forward to getting FCP-X and this box into the same room in a few months! :emote_happyhappy:

I'm expecting 4K Apple TV's by the time the Mac Pro launches now that OSX can use an Apple TV as a desktop display.

You think the new base station can transmit 4k wirelessly? I didn't pay that any mind.

With the black undies too, no doubt...

Although the modularity route was pretty logical as well as a radical switch, from a design standpoint this particular utilization of a cylinder concept is rather...dull IMO.

Just a black glossy cylinder, which has to stand on the working desk. A black glossy bucket to occupy the desk space, without adding to the visual experience if it's already in the field of view. No detail, no finesse...stripes, patterns, grooves, anything.
This seems as the lack of design and overdoing the "less is more" thing.

Surprisingly, the design team seems to have omitted the cleaning staff's muscle memory and women & flowers scenarios.

Give me Logitech or Wacom, otherwise I'll just stick to the frickin' keyboard.

Yeah, just without the Apple lag.

Somewhere I read once that design was not just about aesthetics. Hmmmm... Maybe that's why they decided it was a good way to dissipate heat, too. :willy_nilly:

I know how paradise looks like... A room full of these :

A dark editing/grading room with nice and comfortable furniture.
The new Mac Pro (maxed out) paired with an Apple PCI expansion box (for RRX and other supercharged devices) matching the mac pro design.
3 Black aluminum 4K Cinema Display with TB2
80Tb of external SSD
OSX Mavericks
The next version of FCX
Resolve 10 with the big Control Surface
Adobe CC
Maya
Ableton Live 9 and the next version of Logic Pro + hardware
Dolby Surround Monitoring
Red Ray + Red Projector
Pop Corn
Champagne

A la votre !

And I'd trade it all for some footage that looks as good as that sounds...

Mike

We will see, but I read this from an engineering perspective on another site:

"It's because it's a non-optimal configuration which makes airflow perpendicular to heat flow, instead of parallel to it. In layman's terms, if the air is being sucked in from the bottom and exhausted at the top, components higher up your chimney will have less cooling because they're getting air that's been warmed up by components lower in the chimney.

Ideally you want airflow to be parallel to the flow of heat. e.g. heatsink fan sucks in air through the sides of the heatsink and blows it out the top. So the heatsink is hottest at the bottom (closest to CPU), coolest at the top. Air is coolest at the bottom, hottest at the top. That makes the heat gradient consistent across the air temperature gradient (a certain temperature air always sees the same temperature metal), providing uniform cooling.

On top of that, if your heat gradient is in a moving loop (e.g. water cooling), you want the cooling medium (usually air) moving in the opposite direction of heat flow. That sets up a countercurrent heat exchanger, which is the most efficient at both extracting heat and lowering temperature.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countercurrent_exchan...

If they'd set up an active water cooling loop which pumped water across all the CPUs and GPUs, sent the water to the top where it was cooled by hot air being exhausted, then moved down until it was finally cooled by fresh air being taken in, then this would be a really sweet countercurrent cooling setup. But as best as I can tell, they're not using water cooling. They're just shunting a bunch of heat pipes to the center. So if there's any vertical separation of CPUs and GPUs, stuff higher up will run hotter than stuff further down.

Also, I'd need to do some calcs but my intuition says a circular shape is the worst shape for this. To maximize heat exchange, you want to maximize surface area presented to the airflow. A circular cross-section minimizes surface area encountering a given volume of airflow. That's why your car's radiator is a big rectangular grill positioned to present maximum surface area to incoming air. But there are mitigating factors having to do with boundary flow which may flip it the other way (the car's radiator is not as deep as the Mac Pro is tall) - I'd have to run some calcs to be sure. The pics however make it seem like they're not even doing that, and there's a huge open triangular region in the center where air will just pass through without cooling anything. I truly hope they have vanes running through that central space. "

Yup, the key word being "just".

Not having any problems with the design route in general, had a similar idea years back but with cross arranged components.
The outer shell execution lacks detail based aesthetics and personality. (IMO)
