  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New "inexpensive" PL primes from Sony !?

Mark, have you used them with an Epic/Scarlet?

Only for testing in a studio, we did some comparisons between the Sony's, CP.2s and Canon Primes on a mate's Scarlet, and the results were exactly what you'd expect, that is, you get what you pay for. We preferred the CP.2s over the Sonys and preferred the Sonys over the Canons (which is a reality the relative costs of the lenses bears out).

I've shot 5 projects now on the Sony primes, each time as a bundled lens set with rented Sony F3s where our client's budget wouldn't stretch to nicer glass. In short? They get the job done. Optically they're nice, and operationally they're leaps and bounds better than still lenses to shoot with.

We recently acquired a set of our own as part of a new F3 package we picked up. I was contemplating keeping them as a cheaper option to rent out with our camera packages, but as I said I don't really think rental is what these lenses are best suited for; and since we already have a full set of CP.2s, they're the lenses I take out on my own shoots, so I'm selling my Sonys.

I don't think I have any copies of the .R3D files from our Scarlet tests, but if you're interested I can shoot you through some samples from another comparison we did with the Sonys and CP.2s on an F3.

Why all the hate towards the Sony primes (both first gen and now second?). I own the F3 and the first gen primes and they look great, they're fast and you can't beat the price. I find it funny that the hate is aimed at comparing them to more expensive prime lenses. That's ridiculous. They aren't S4's and never will be...but Sony never claimed they were. For those who will trash my opinion because I own a Sony, I also owned a Red Epic and loved it too. Cheers all.

Hmmm. I don't think anyone trashed the optics of the lenses. Just a couple of comments on the craftsmanship of the housing. 90 percent of the discussion was on who manufactured them. In any case, it's great we have some more affordable options coming out.

Do the first gen lenses work on other PL mount cameras and not just Sony cameras? I've read a few places they don't.

We tested very early ones on Epic (Ti mount).
They worked, but there was something strange with the tolerances, yes. They didn't fit the Polish PL to µFT adapter we had, which takes everything else from Zeiss of all ages to Leica-C, and back caps other than Sony's didn't fit either.

Second Generation is better made.....Shame they are not Full Frame.
I guess Schneider Cine-Xenons, Full Frame for $4,000 each are far better option....

So consensus is that they don't work well with the red? OR rather with any other cameras other than the Sony cams?

I think most will say they arent bad at all. Most AC's do complain that there aren't enough witness marks. Still, they are pretty good bang for buck, but at this point, I would be looking at lenses that cover a larger circle. Zunow is another Japanese company that will be releasing lenses to compete with Schneider Full Frames.

Price point for those?

I like how the CineAlta ones have the option to swap to different mounts as well though.
So it'll rent out more lol.

Hmmm? The CineAlta don't have swappable mounts actually. PL only. The Zunows are going to be 3k each.

$4K last I heard, which was last week. Either way. Crazy deal.

They. just. need. to. make. them.......

Has anyone used these new Sonys? I can't find any reviews.

Not sure if this qualifies as a review but worth checking out...these lenses are big !

I watched this too and couldn't figure out why 98% of the video spent on the set-up and then the last 4 seconds reveal questionable results with mismatched lenses (25mm Sony, Zeiss CP2 and 50mm Ultraprime).

What happened to the other 4 lenses in the 6 lens Sony set?

If someone can explain this video to me I would appreciate it.

Is the take-away that Ultraprimes are soft and nasty, Sony lenses are color true and fairly crisp and Zeiss CP2 lenses add a warm hue and have sharpest focus?

Somewhere on the page they talk about being able to download the stills & draw your own conclusions I guess. I agree a bit weird that they don't cover the full range. Ahh buts thats youtube for you.
