  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New "inexpensive" PL primes from Sony !?

While we've got you talking lenses Jarred, are RED out of the new lens design business? Those of us eye'ing these Sony lenses want to know if we should wait a little to see what you guys come up with next? Although good glass, the RPPs are a bit on the heavy side.

Don't make us dance with the devil that is Sony, we want to give you guys our money...

Oh yeah that would be nice! But J and J are pretty silent on the subject. Last thing was that they are on short supply only because demand is so high. But we are still waiting for the electronic lenses and the REDMOTE pro and maybe even more? Like an overhaul of the existing ones - or at least a restock ;) ???

Silence is ... very telling.

I'll wager they have some AMAZING new lenses coming... or they would have announced their exit from that game. Illl go even further to say they are developing lenses for covering the DRAGON sensor
as so few sets out there will.

DRAGON PRO PRIMES would be BAD ASS.

WYVERN ELECTRONIC ZOOMS

Oh yeah. That's what I'm hoping for and guessing on too. What makes me wonder though is that they didn't announce it. I know they changed the direction on announcing items but they still do it on the big items - meizler etc. they were planning on more lenses and I would still believe they do.

I just worry that going silent on something like lenses will mean people will purchase an alternative and be reluctant to swap.

If they are building new lenses based on FF stills glass, with different mount options, electronic interface to both Canon and Nikon mounts, and controlled via Redmote Pro and Touchscreens - then I think they can keep quiet and just let them sell themselves.

Of course, if they are, I've just outed them so they may as well just admit it and save the rest of us having to buy and sell inferior glass!

And we've gone from incorrect speculation of an existing product to just simple speculation. RedUser 2012.

I would imagine that making lenses takes a lot of effort and would take years to design. So much R+D and testing. That said, I feel they are up to something but don't expect them anytime soon. Unlike electronics, lenses have a much longer shelf life. I doubt RED would want to bugger them up. As for them being silent, they are probably exorcizing the new motto of only announcing new products when they're ready.

Wasn't the first version something like $1.5K a piece?

Isnt there a problem with the Sony PL mount ie Sony lenses will not mount to non Sony PL mounts ?

The F3 was sold with or without the 3 PL lenses.

At release the F3 was 16,000 body only.... 23,000 with three primes.

So I imagine 7,000 is the increase for lenses.

That would be around 2,300 per lens.

I'm expecting these new and improved to be more. It only makes sense.

yeah they suck but they worked on any pl mount camera. I saw them being used on a RED before...

Quite a few people seemingly used these on REDs PL mount. Not just the one from Matt.

Thanks Ryan, now that you say that I remember that set offer. Wouldn't have remembered the price though. So that puts them closer to the likes of the CP2. Especially since the metal housing etc. will surely make the price rise. Still room for something cheaper ;)

Are new Sony Primes FULL FRAME??
I find it odd that cinematographers are now referring to 8-perf 35mm as 'full frame'. ;-) 'Double-frame' is really more accurate! Anyway, the only full-frame I know of is 15-perf 65mm.

For every post like that I see one like this :)

Alex Nelsonsaid:April 7, 2011 at 3:13 pmI work at a rental house called Tamberelli Digital in Manhattan. We purchased a set of these lenses a few weeks ago with one of our PMW-F3 cameras because they seemed like a good solution for clients who can’t afford to rent more expensive glass. It turns out, however, that these Happy Meal lenses only work on Sony cameras, despite their claim as “PL mount” lenses. The ears on the PL mount are larger than those on an Ultra Prime, and so they wouldn’t fit on our Canon 7D with FGV PL modification, our AF100 with Hot Rod adapter, or our Alexas. They slide right onto our F35 though.

The info pins on the Sony PLs built for the f3 physically interfere with the flange contact surface on many PL mounts.
SO.. you could line the lens up to fit, then be unable to press it in far enough to turn the locking collar.

Didn't know they'd fit on an Epic...

For rental houses, you'd be mad to stock the Sony PLs - with their plastic construction they're just not robust enough for roughhousing that rental gear cops. For an owner-operator though, someone who'll be taking greater care of their lenses - they're a terrifically affordable way into to proper cinema glass. Optically they're really solid and they're a dream to use compared to still lenses.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for - and for the price, I'd say you actually get quite a lot with the Sony primes. I'd take them over Canon primes any and every day of the week.

For the record, Les Zellan chairman and owner of Cooke Optics told me "I have no statement on the Sony lenses, other than to say we are not doing them." when I asked if he would make a statement on the rumors that Cooke was manufacturing the new Sony lenses. Add that with Jon Fauer, Mitch Gross and Illya Friedman, and I say that rumor has been put to bed.

Thanks for clearing that up.
