  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New "inexpensive" PL primes from Sony !?

I'm looking forward to seeing some image samples from these and finding out what "affordable" means in Sony language. Having another option in the CP2 price range with even t-stops across the whole line is potentially great news. "Made by Cooke" sounds nice, but there's a good chance that phrase is applied in the same sense that Handycam lenses are "made by Zeiss" and Panasonic camcorder lenses are "made by Leica."

well sony has zeiss lenses for their DSLRs and zeiss lenses for their NEX lines.....i personally am not a big fan of zeiss "character" (prefer schneider) but those lenses are great....
seems like sony knows who to partner with.....btw: those zeiss still lenses for sony are not cheap...not more expensive but up there with canon L,....
i am excited to see these new additions....
btw: the PL mount can be removed to make them ZF mount which in turn can be made into nikon, canon,....via adapters

That's the question! No announcements on price so far.

Where does all the misinformation come from?

Cooke has nothing to do with these lenses and nothing to do with the first generation either. And they didn't build the original RED zooms either.

Sony bought Minolta. It is quite capable of making its own lenses. These are very interesting lenses and they have learned a lot from people like myself, Matt and others beating them up pretty hard from the first generation. These are promised to be very different lenses in a new ground up design.

The Sony rep at the demo stated they were manufactured by Cooke exclusively for Sony... Is he lying then?

by exlusive they meant manufactured by Cooke exclusively for Sony. They are PL mount, but if your remove the PL mount they have the FZ mount, then you can adapt that to EF mount, etc...

These lenses look great. That is what's exciting in the Sony announcement.

We didn't miss the lenses, they are in another thread:

All wrong and doesn't make sense anyway. FZ mount is 18mm from sensor, much closer than PL at 54mm. So how do you remove a PL mount from the back of a lens to reveal an FZ mount which is now at least 36mm too close to the sensor to focus properly.

Please show me your proof that Cooke has anything to do with these lenses.

Interesting. I know the Sony reps. Which one was it? Juan? Peter? Someone else?

Someone either misspoke or was misheard.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just repeating what the Sony rep told us in the focus group. We didn't even get to touch the lenses so I'm only going by what I was told!

Someone else...And they were very clear that they were "secretly" made... Maybe they misspoke, but I'm only repeating what I was told.

Maybe people are just assuming Cooke because that is the lens that is shown on all the press materials for the new cameras and Sony recently announced that they closed their lens factory.

But who knows.. considering the lens is set in the camera rotated 90 degrees the wrong way .... maybe this all was just an accident.

It does put the lens in the best position to see the Cooke Logo though :)

There is no wrong orientation to mount a PL lens. That is the beauty of the design. Right or wrong depends entirely on where you are standing in relation to the camera/lens :-)

Matt, new Sony lenses are not made by Cooke, just as the last set were not. I'm not doubting that a rep that told you that, I can probably guess who it was, but my belief is that information was being perpetuated only from a falsehood that they read on twitter.

Full specs are not yet known but as they are built for 35mm cameras they should cover it, if it would hold true for FF 35mm stills sensors we will have to wait and see but I would assume so.

There absolutely is a right and wrong orientation for Cooke ( and other ) PL lenses that have i/data... the pins on the lens needs to line up with the pins on the camera mount to be fully electronically functional... you can get around that by placing pins around every side of the mount, but there is usually only 1 or 2 sets of pins on cameras.. and usually if there are 2 sets one is for Arri LDS data and one is for Cooke data, since they themselves use different orientations.

While we've got you talking lenses Jarred, are RED out of the new lens design business? Those of us eye'ing these Sony lenses want to know if we should wait a little to see what you guys come up with next? Although good glass, the RPPs are a bit on the heavy side.

Don't make us dance with the devil that is Sony, we want to give you guys our money...

Yes, as Jarred pointed out the i/data requires 12:00 alignment in mount, but like Illya has pointed out (assuming you don't need the i/data) if the focus puller can only be/see below the camera or looking down above it, it is very wonderful to be able to situate the focus scales on top and bottom, versus the typical sides, by rotating it in the mount as we see in the photo with the 25mm Cooke S4.
