  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Fast Prime Set WOW

Hey Sanjin

Have you used the Leica M 21/1.4 on the red one? Will it work? Also, do you know were I coud get my Leica R lens serviced?

Cheers
Brian

I tried Leica M 21mm f/1.4 in the shop once, it's lovely lens and it works well because R1 Mysterium is very close to Leica M8 sensor size.

About Leica R lens service I do it locally at Leica Shop in Vienna.

In Switzerland official Leica repair service contact is:

Also you can sent Leica lenses to P+S Technik lens service, Les Bosher in Wells, UK or Duclos lens service in US.

From what I understand, you'll have to bump that number up a bit.

Well this comment makes it a bit confusing "Phase 1 is 10 lenses - (18, 21, 25, 35, 40, 50, 75 and 100) with 16 and 65 soon after the first 8 deliver. Plan for Phase 2 (12, 14, 29, 135, 150)"

So ... I was speculating on a set of 8 - not 10 - as it appears the 16 and 65 are after the fact.

As you know, current pricing on the 8 in Cooke S4's are:

18 - $18,250
21 - $18,250
25 - $17,400
35 - $18,250
40 - $18,250
50 - $17,250
75 - $17,250
100 - $17,250

so the 8 lenses are $142,150 list on Cooke S4s - and Michael is under that ... so ... $135,000 top end I suspect for the 8 lenses - but maybe you do need to buy the set of 10 and wait for the 16 and 65.

Like I said, from an unpublished source I have it that the cost will be a bit higher than that. And as I have stated before (and been proven correct), all of this pricing can be subject to change.

seems like great lenses, but (you know it would come...hehe)
for ROI a set of s4`s seems to be the better deal.

reputation, cooke love etc.

despite that, i am looking forward to try them anyway :)

Wonder what's the T-stop on that one. I'm not sure how this works, is a T-stop of less than 1 possible? I was thinking T1 would be 1:1 transmission.

Nils F stop is the ratio between the aperture opening and focal length. so a 50mm lens with a 50mm diameter max aperture is an F1.0. And a 50mm lens with a 52mm diameter aperture would be an F0.965 for instance and T stop denotes actual transmission, so maybe about T0.95

...and will be priced below the current MP and S4 pricing and above current UltraPrime pricing.

When I read this 'I imagine' a price in-between S4s and UP.. Even if higher than half way I imagine it would still bring them in maybe close to the $15k mark.. I'm not impartial as I am very very interested in these lenses.

Is suspect that if the lenses do well and gain full industry recognition the price could easily rise to as they do promise amazing attributes.

Kind regards

How could they not get popular?

I suppose they will be spoken of as the "PL Primos", and smaller and lighter than MPs and S4's.

Leicas look more organic than MPs, and I suppose than RPPs, yet not as filled with "character" as S4's. They are clean and sharp. Right?

Demand should go up like a firestorm.

I might look no further.

How could they not get popular?.

I'm very hopeful too... 'On paper' with the little we know they sound great.

I can't wait to see a lens or 2 and play with it on a Red camera. Until then I can only be very hopeful?

There are lots of reasons why some great products don't achieve the industry penetration they deserve. Some of these reason are nothing to do with the intrinsic values of the product itself..

I would be careful extrapolating from Leica stills glass. These new lenses look quite radical in design and we don't know the consequences of this. (I'm hopeing all is good). The image Ultra primes create don't look like MP despite coming from the same stable... (I slightly prefer the UPs look as it seems a little more natural while still being a modern lens).

Also your character assessment of glass is slightly different from mine. What I take from that is the inevitable subjective (and acutely anecdotal) nature of our respective purchase informing opinions.

kind regards

Michael

I won't be purchasing a set unfortunately, just renting for my projects. I of course know that we need to see them before we know what percentage of out expectations they will meet. I can only hope these look as Primo as possible, along with the rest of the world, and hope they will be produced and purchased in large volume so that they will rent for the same or less than other top shelf glass. I'd rent RPPs right now, all the way. However, if what I believe will happen here actually takes place, then I'll be with SJ smoking cigars and drinking Scotch (while posting images red user only those with 30" displays can view). ;)

Who will now champion these LP primes now? I miss Bravin already.

Marker Karahadian (late of Plus8 Digital and then Panavision) is now at BandPro.

But I don't think I can have the same fun with Marker as I did with Michael. ;-)

I'll be having different fun with Michael soon enough, and no, it is not nearly as sick & wrong as that sounds! If you haven't figured it out already then y'all will know soon enough, for those that care about these things.

John, it's New Year's Eve. Don't we all have better things to do? I'm guessing Michael does!

I like that this has become a running in-joke to perhaps five of us on this forum, with everyone else wondering WTF?

Based on a statement earlier today by Jim Jannard on the CML, Michael Bravin will not be attending the upcoming January RED event.

Of course I won't be either, but that's because I can't make it that day. ;-)

Happy New Year everyone! Talk to you soon John.

Michael does have nice new avatar :)

I think that Michael Bravin has a full right to attend the next RED Event just because he is CML member (sponsor) and as one of early RED1 reservation holders/owners.

Also just to be clear and aware that each attender on this event could be(come) (before or after) a possible "informant" for any of RED competitors...

We have politely asked that no employee from Arri, Sony, Panasonic, Vision Research, Silicon Imaging or any other camera manufacture attend RED Day. This is a closed event with every person attending registered. We will be happy to open up all we are doing to our competitors at NAB in April as we have always done. I fully expect every company to respect our request.

Sanjin... when you have your own event you can invite anyone you want. :-)
