  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

Guys the M is NOT an option for you with your dragon/epic/scarlet. You could BAREBONES get it to work, but then you need to add a lot of stuff to make it realistic. The Dragon works great on an Movi M5, as many have showcased online. ZERO Issues, just need longer carbon tubes, or take off top mount and it's fine.

Also you should know DJI Ronin and M do not do well in the air AT ALL. They drift like crazy.

On top of that, they weigh more than the camera! Ronin coming in at 10lbs, and M at 5. Yikes.

I think the people wondering about this are more for the owner/operators who need a quick solution for one man band type of shoots that need a portable solution for basic tracking shots, like some of the projects I work on. For larger productions where critical focus is necessary, and if there's running/action/etc where a follow focus/wireless transmitter for monitoring is needed, I'd rent a larger unit or hire a steadicam op.

Can you point me to some tests of this combo? I'm surprised that this is even possible as many were struggling with M10 and Dragons hence the M15 release.

Looking forward to it, Felix

Thanks Felix! Anxiously awaiting to hear what you think! I'm seriously considering getting it for my Epic next month.

By the way did you get the extensions from Cinemilled or is it just the parts out of the box?

Cheers,
Omar

hi omar,

the extensions are "self build"
out of the box ist too short..
just 16mm rods. with some screws :)

cheers.

With the battery mounted on the handlebar, were the extensions necessary? Or did the rig work with no modifications?

thanks felix that was a good test run :)

the last bit were you on a bike?

maybe they were trying to balance an RPP :)

They are necessary for balancing because Epic is a top heavy camera and standard tube length is not enough to balance it properly

Can you descibe how you setup your power with the v-mount? I have the same setup Red/Ronin and Sigma wise. But I have only been flying the a7s so far and would love to get the Epic on board. Thanks!

The A7s with the Ronin M has been very easy to balance and the weight is very manageable. Right now I am waiting on a proper hdmi cable to connect it to a shogun. Another element in play is a unit called the aputure dec, which allows for focus pulling and changing aperture from a handle mounted next to the ronin handle. Currently monitoring with the remote ios app which has latency issues, hoping that when the shogun is worked out we will have a great flying rig.

Thanks for the video Felix! It seems to fly great! I'm excited at getting a Ronin M for my Epic, especially after seeing that.

Does it feel to you like the motors are easily handling the Epic? Or that you are pushing the device to the edge of it's limits?

Thanks for all the info,
Omar
