  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Camera called Craft?

Looking through some different camera sensors that are out on the market and this one from Onsemi looks pretty close to the specs on the Craft. Someone who knows sensors better will have to tell me if the dynamic range matches up.

I doubt it is that sensor, the specs look too low, and no native Bayer function, and I doubt it is three layered color though the name sounds familiar and I am wondering if that is the company that got that Russian three layered color sensors I was looking at using for a low grade image sensor years ago. The specs look low performance enough. I would think this sensor would be acceptable on a basic level if you have enough light. I will have to look further into it, as I'm out at the moment. However, Micron sensors years ago had similar performance on the consumer ones on some areas, and Micro or Sony sensors would be a choice for cheap cameras. The Micron one used in the original Nixon J1 would have even a good choice at the bottom of the market.

The 5k one looks interesting from a hybrid point of view, where you can abstract stills as well. I wonder if there is any range busting, low light busting, noise busting 8k sensors with 4k video modes our there. But I'm still wishing fur a 4k three layered color.

That's good enough for me! If Jim's involved, I'm in! (And so is the Blue Man Group '-)

Well it is Jim's 10 year anniversary since first announcing RED in 2006… maybe he got bored and needed to do something new with his time (and money) :thumbup1:

Remember what Jim said about how to become a millionaire? "Become a billionaire THEN start a camera company."

That really says a lot

Although red probably did much more R&D and less "off the shelf"

Dennis I have bridge to sell you in Brooklyn ;-) Sorry I couldn't resist. All good fun...

They did a lot of high volume stuff for a low volume product with an expensive economic system. By the end date of that you might just feel like a millionaire. However the high volume redray went where? if you know what to do it is a lot cheaper, but BM has done a high volume trick, probably to compete, by ordering exclusive sensor. Now Craft is probably cutting a lot of baggage to undercut, but this may not be the cheapest quality camera that can be done with present mass tech.

Dah! So what sort of video equipment is this bridge thing at Nab, which booth? :)

At least Kinefinity had a "real" presence at NAB and (more or less) "real" cameras on display ... that are supposedly shipping (more or less) relatively soon. Different price points ... different products ... it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Well you said it, a booth at NAB probably makes sense if you have actual hardware to show and with Kinefinity going into it's 4th/5th year with a RAW camera I would hope they have a booth.

As for Craft Camera not having one, I don't hold them against it. Would rather know my $500 deposit is going into something more.

Not a huge fan of these long gestational periods. If your product isn't ready for market, why announce it? The few company's that can reasonably promise a December delivery is Apple. A projected December date is consumer speak for see ya in new year.

The startup process is understandably difficult and uncertain. But particularly, for a new company to announce so far in advance seems perilous. Product develop changes, production setbacks, speculative pricing, competition. What little bit of marketing material Craft has provided says little about the company's DNA.

The biblical story of David and Goliath only had a happy ending because the rock hit dead center the forehead.

Yeah it's definitely probably fake and not real.

If Craft can provide the professional community with a few more confidence checks, we're good to go.

Ask for them. I sent them an email on Monday about providing some footage, pictures, etc. Then this shows up on their Facebook page today. They're definitely listening and providing what they feel is necessary but still keep a bit of the mystery.

JB. I read what you said about a sensor sensor taking 2 tears to design from scratch therefor it can't be crisis with those figures. But it is common to be designing the next product before you introduce the present product. It is also common to make refinements to products from batch to batch. You can even have test samples to the side of chips you are manufacturing to test improvements to a future batch. So, an new refined version of the sensor can be made.

I personally wouldn't mind a 20 stop, 120db Snr, 20 bit sensor, but this is all we have to work with.

Would you mind the data rate and hence storage requirements to hold a 20 stop image? Transfer speeds, transcoding, rendering, etc.. everything is affected. Isn't is easier to just use a few lights?
