  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Camera called Craft?

Would you mind the data rate and hence storage requirements to hold a 20 stop image? Transfer speeds, transcoding, rendering, etc.. everything is affected. Isn't is easier to just use a few lights?

I did say what we have is what we have to work with. This is a cheap camera, but people are acting like it needs to be on the level of the 4.6k BM or Dragon. It is what it is. If it had 14 or 15 stop uhdp50 I would be more happy.

Why does this look like a photoshop job? The perspective and contact shadows on the hand look odd, like it's not actually sitting in the hand.

It does look suspicious, but where is the lighting. I see shadows (that look photoshopped admitedly) and indentation.

The lighted Christmas tree in the background seems a little incongruous as well. Even if an actual mock-up or prototype, one would expect it to be shown in a shop environment.

Looks like these guys already have experience building camera's,

Ha ha, I wrote about that ages ago, but a lot of information was on European sites. Are, the old days of cardboard, and Wooden Cameras.

I'm very sorry, but I have to strongly disagree with you.

I think the best type of imagery for this teaser image would have been more along the lines of something like this.

What do you guys think, do you agree?

Is that a male model with a giant sized back scratcher.

You guys take it too seriously. Sure somebody doing an early prototype test, taking the camera out on christmas day might take a shot like this, and it be shared at some point.

They are maybe announcing the camera now because the testing is going well and it is NAB and sensor and parts might be ready for production by end of the year. We don't necessarily have to be too cynical.

If the cmosis sensor, then it might indictate that BM will also have an upgrade by years end. Maybe there will be a old mini 4k runout before hand. BM really needs to get rid of half its cameras. In field they need only 4k head camera, 4k pocket preferably (definitely for me) 4.6k mini, 4.6k-8k Ursa. Every camera capable of 4kp50 and reduced rolling shutter or global.

Just sayin' if they had a working prototype since Christmas, they could have put up a pic of it (if not a pic from it) on the website rather than drawings/renderings.

Does not in and of itself condemn the project to failure, but also does not cause $500 deposit type confidence. And yes I did do a deposit on the R-1... two deposits as a matter of fact and more than a year before I received them. But that was groundbreaking resolution. This camera is sort-of groundbreaking in price, but there are others doing the same.

I may own one of these someday, but there just isn't enough that's new to jump on board early, like with the R-1.

Frankly, people are depositing on a camera they do not know which other companies could be competing with with new cameras by its release. Why did BM not release new cameras at Nab, and November is a Red release period, and Kinefinity could role out a new low end model by then. If they had it today I could buy with confidence be a useful I knew how it compared to others, and not what might come by the time it got here.

Why no photo, drawings look better, and the proto is probably different from the finale design.

Thank you all for the responses, especially this craft camera that I'm not gonna hold my breath for now. This is why I joined reduser because of all you and the information you guys have and the life suggestions (including the salad and brush three times life advice lol)

hopefully I'll be able to join the RED ranks soon once I save up enough for my raven.

Thank you again

For the record......Michael Bay did go to college.

Looking through some different camera sensors that are out on the market and this one from Onsemi looks pretty close to the specs on the Craft. Someone who knows sensors better will have to tell me if the dynamic range matches up.

Levi, I've realised that the reason Onsemi sounds familiar is because they bought out Aptina, the former Micron company. That would give access to a low heat sensor that does not need much cooling, but I don't know if they got access to Sony's high DNR technology, they should have. They have high pixel count sensors, even omni has 24fps 6k in 1/2,3 inch sensor. Will be interesting to see who they use and what the second generation uses (I.e 6-8k for $1-2k more within two years, swap out the brain and sensor and reuse your old modules remount the head and the brain on a tripod, or hook the head up to a video assist etc, and reuse it. I think BM has to revist there POV lineup.

I'm going over to the 4k video assist thread not LW to discuss some interesting ideas for camera head for it.

I've got a better suggestion.

Don't pay to go to film school.

What a fucking waste of money, sorry! In the industry your "credibility" is often challenged once people find out you were a film student or are one. Weird right ? If you go get a "regular job" later people will look at you like you're worse than scum. Take it from me, I studied literature, and then decided to get into studying film.

If you have a free ride scholarship, or really really want a degree, major in Marketing, Business, or engineering - and just make friends with all the film kids.

Instead, buy a Raven, get an apartment or better yet, build a tiny house/trailer in the back of a box truck or van and live relatively free NEARBY a school that teaches film. Get a job on campus or near campus that's either at a bar or coffee shop where the film students (preferably attractive members of opposite or same sex depending on your preference) hang out.

Make as many friends as you can who are aspiring writers, directors, producers. Start making films with them and your Raven. Become the SPECIALIST that they want, no they DEMAND, because you know your shit and you work hard, and you are likeable.

Sit in on a few classes for fun, go to EVERY screening you can get to for free or cheap.

Live frugally, exercise a lot. Don't drink beer. If you have to get drunk, have a Vodka+soda or something.

Don't forget to eat vegetables - salads are your friend.

Go to the dentist, even if it's too expensive, try to get a credit card or something and figure it out. Brush three times a day.

Don't get into a serious relationship, try a lot of different things.

By the time all your friends finish film school you may already have a career and a track record.
i think i almost peed my pants... maybe too many vodka sodas

Good news!... your incontinence could get you a Depends commercial. '-)

Yeah, Wayne, there are sensors that can do the 4K and 6K nicely, but getting it processed and cooled properly is the hang up. Definitely will be interesting to see how they processed the color information from the sensor (whichever brand it is) and see if it's closer to BM color or an AXIOM style color. Would be nice if it was a mix of a Canon Cinema and AXIOM look. Warm and greenish, not too sharp and "purpley"

Well, just saying they have capability, and a leader in low heat sensors of the padt, which is where Sony got there ability after a cross licensing deal. At the we are looking 4k, and if this technology it should be most capable of keeping heat and price down.

They should hit you up for NDA testing when the time comes

I would love to see an Open Source camera project. Modeled largely after the PC market model. Purchase the parts separately sensors, boards, cooling, chasis. storage, mounts, cameraOS. Build to suit.
