  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Camera called Craft?

I'm going to say something RED fans might hate me for..... but if you're a college student then do *NOT* buy a Raven!

How long will it take you to graduate? 4yrs? Plus at least a couple of years after you graduate before you start to really get some experience and gain some traction.

By then a RED Raven will be old news, and you could pick one up for dirt cheap, and if you'd purchased one it wouldn't be worth much.

Instead buy one of these:
Samsung NX1 / Sony A6300 / Sony A7s mk1 / Panasonic G7 / Sony PMW-F3 / BMPCC / Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera.

Get yourself a small set of Nikon primes (and perhaps a couple of zooms).

The total cost will be vastly lower.

Then you're set with your personal camera, and use the university to get hold of any other gear you need.

Raven isn't aimed at poor students.

That's good enough for me! If Jim's involved, I'm in! (And so is the Blue Man Group '-)

Looks like RED with their modularity. It's super clean and less industrial looking than RED but those module pins on the side look identical to the ones on the side handle for Epic and Scarlet cameras ... so definitely some influence, but it'd be weird (and kinda neat) for it to somehow be tied directly or indirectly to Jim/RED. I was the #1 spot on reservations when it opened and got a personal email from Scott which kinda surprised me so I'm not writing these guys off whatsoever.

Think about it...might be a fabulous gimbal and especially drone camera.

Nor am I... I was just making light of that other forum speculating that Jim is involved. In a gossip industry like camera-making, if Jim were involved everyone would know.

I don't believe Jim/Jarred is behind. Maybe it's me, but that's my bet on it.

True. Once they ship the camera and open up a bit more on the private forum, it'll be interesting to see where the inspiration and ideas came from as well as who the team is.

Whatever happened to the folded cardboard version, and will this be cardboard too. Imagine what would happen if it rained Dennis.

Unless I get the detail or they want a Era tester, I don't order till I know more. But honestly what they an do with cardboard nowadays. :)

Yeah Dennis.

Keep in mind what other cameras started with just nice 3D renders. Something's never came to fruition and other things did, but morphed. Or some were produced like the meizler module but never sold. So I think it's fair to give Craft the benefit of the doubt that they will have a camera and it'll be decent. They've obviously already spent a crap ton of coin on ads and renders, so they have something. It's not a RED but I feel like it'll make Blackmagic pee their pants.

The image off the sensor has to be a showstopper. We've already seen modularity done right. Practical, but less novel

Put 13-15 stops of RED or ARRI like resolution in a simple plywood box, sales would smash. Literally people would be dancing a jig.

The Craft pricing model leaves very little room for error. The prosumer crowd is fickle. If the image looks like wet cornflakes, I can just hear people screaming to high heaven that their 8 bit DSLR has more resolution.

So yes, let's live vicariously thru Dennis. :) And in retrospect I'm glad RED elected to focus growth beginning with the top end of the professional market.

Interesting camera concept ...ridiculous price, even puts Kinfinity to shame.

Dennis, like all intrepid explorers we salute you, journeying into the wilds of new tech start ups .....may your journey be uneventful and as we saw in "the Revenant" may you have no run ins with a bear.

Good on you Dennis. I was joking about the cardboard though.

Guys,

Have you read that bmcuser thread. It seems they have a cheap network of Chinese manufacturers supplying. This thing is likely cheap to make. So their prices are not likely to be thin on margins.

It's hard to pre-order now since the BM and Red stuff. By what Levi says, it looks like people might still be waiting for the Metzler module.

I should say, we might expect BM price cuts or 4k sensor upgrade to counter. Craft offers S

The all in one form factor is more dust and water proof. So different people are likely to buy either the BM or Craft based on their preferences. Craft offers sexy variable size, BM offers all in one, and better performance in the 4.6k.

Unless the founder makes the Forbes 400 there will not be any Craft camera. Get real.......

I suspect this is wrong and we will be seeing a camera end of this year or the beginning of next year. Slow, yes. Bugs, yes. A good camera that will find its place in the market for certain applications, yes. We have seen images from Axiom but nothing. Just because there is or isn't test footage doesn't mean the product will or won't come to fruition.

I don't think anyone is waiting for one anymore, especially since we've moved to DSMC2. But ... it woulda been nice to have and I'd have definitely bought one. At Least they took the Mini-mag tech and incorporated it into everything. That wireless function was amazing.
