  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K

So that's twice you have refused directly the question I put to you.

A really simple question.

Being cryptic and talking in circles isn't debate.

There is not going to be a debate.

Pointless and avoidable through consideration why Canon, Sony and Panasonic cameras cost as much.
And can supply the product soon after its introduction. Without the need to buy two.

If that needs debating, the vital part for understanding is missing, which makes the debate senseless.

...

There is not going to be a debate.

Ohhhh...because you don't want to have one...

Then your opinion is not credible. And it's at best then, opinion.

You allude to a manufacturing capacity or lack thereof and then refuse to clarify if that's what you mean.

Being discussed here is manufacturing capability and reliability. You're just throwing shade without engaging in discussion about your claims, perpetuating an alternative reality without meaningfully standing behind what you claim.

The act of a coward...not unlike those you yourself accuse of...infatuation ?

JB

Gentleman. Keep is civil.

Opinions are formed from localized experience and have been expressed, debating isn't necessary going to lead to anything good in this case.

Make the points, but let's not turn this into a bout.

There's a broad spectrum of cameras out there. I'm a realist, I know both sides of this "debate", deeply understand the sentiments here. But it's a hole not worth going down IMO.

I see you are passionate with fishing for reaction.
Perhaps the 4th attempt brings more success.

Character assasination attempt and strawman holding hands on the fantasy road are cute.
Needs more negative fill to accentuate the contrast.

But at this super cheap price and are getting pretty reliable, having a second body on the ready is a no brainer. You can also do a two camera setup.

Paul
...and maybe having the second body on a back version of the Firmware is something to think about also.

It's a less simple polycarbonate which is plastic, reinforced by carbon fibre marketing bits.

So it's not plastic but it's plastic.

No it isn't.

Tunnel vision enchanted by Black Magic.

Of course it's out of stock when the product is put on market before it's ready while its pricing is low balled to destroy the competition and hijack the demand.

Yes quality and quantity are often in reverse-proportional relation.

Especially when you don't own a factory but aim to under cut those who do.

A lot of clueless people are unaware of the bias so subdued by it, project according to it.

We have freedom of choice in many parts of the world these days, when you think this camera is not for you, don't buy it.

For all the others, wait for independent reviews by reviewers you trust, maybe rent it first and then make up your mind if this camera serves your needs and is worth buying.

Come now, Hrvoje... what are we to call your rambling dismissive posts then?

Your projection.

Everyone is free to their opinion. Just dress it up as such and don't make universal claims of "truth" that are simply just that: opinions.

I see you also completely missed the point of the comments.

Read back again what you quoted and find a valorizarition of the camera or anything related to "freedom of choice" which neccessitates this comment. You can also help Andree find anything limiting "freedom of opinions" or dismissing the creative tool.

After we learn to make distinctions between what was actually said and assumed it was, and avoid jumping to conclusions and projections every time some criticism appears, the discussion can continue without happy pink unicorns, infantile sensitivity or neurotic animosity.

Regarding the reviewers, if critical input is unwelcome here and preferred only after pressing "play" coming from a preferred source, there is an ignore option for cultivating the dissociation.

I haven't been using this camera, but looking at the BRAW samples so far, it's pretty safe to say that it beats camera's like the MYSTERIUM-X on all points and many others on many points(resolution, codec, TCO, weight, sizes,...).

The point of the question is obvious: you haven't actually used this camera so there is no practical basis to support statements like this that are solely based on the specs on a camera that was just announced. Yes, or no? No need to make it personal. You don't agree with what I said, attack that instead (others did as much without calling me names, see Paul Jones #91 and John Brawley #93).

I don't use BM cameras because I know of too many situations where the cameras have failed/not worked properly on people. I would rather avoid having that kind of personal experience if I can avoid it. Also, I would like for BM to address these issues because it would actually benefit their products/users. Just my opinion.

The samples online clearly show what gear was used, what ISO, etc. If anything the BRAW samples they made available show EXACTLY what the camera can do without ever having to use it. It's also very similar to the Pocket 4K which many people own and have used for a while.

Reading reviews online, you're going to find a lot of negative press, because the ones who speak the loudest are the whiners. Have you read reviews on PC hardware? No one leaves a review if everything works as expected, it's just the people with negative experiences like to complain as loudly as they can.

Do you have any firsthand experience of Blackmagic cameras failing, or is this just something you've gathered from reading online? Someone who has downloaded the BRAW samples and graded them, while having owned many Blackmagic cameras in the past, is way more qualified to speak on the images/reliability of this camera than someone dismissing it who has never used one. Blackmagic cameras are not perfect, but they represent a ridiculous value.

Sample footage posted by BM is not going to tell you if there are any QC issues with the cameras that are actually going to be shipped out to users. Better to wait and see once the camera is more widely available.

In so far as my personal experience I have none (I said why in a previous post), but others have posted some of their personal experiences in this thread. I am not hating on BM, just expressing an opinion and hope that they improve their QC/manufacturing. Ok, don't want to derail the thread with this. This is obviously not an issue to most people.

Since you don't use BMD camera's...

The RED ONE was famous for it's reliability, look how far they have come with the current line-up.

Never trust on one camera with an important shoot, even ARRI's can hit a concrete floor and brake.

We always take a A7S2+28-135 with us as backup for important shoots(camera breakdown or when the lights go out), so far we never had to use it.

Yes, and Red improved significantly on the quality of their cameras since then. BM is relatively young in the camera industry so I'm hoping BM does the same.

Sorry to have sidelined the thread, now maybe everyone can go back to discussing the perceived pros/cons of this camera.

Blackmagic has been making cameras since 2012. I think 7 years is not young anymore. RED One came out in like (2008?) and dragon came out around 2013. You can do a lot in 7 years. Look at how far Kinefinity has progressed, as their first cameras were not that good.

Everything in the pocket 6K is just rehashing existing Blackmagic technology. They've already made the EF mount with many of their cameras. The body is basically the same as the 4K model, and the sensor is very similar to the 4K spec, just a bit larger. I suspect there are not going to be any issues which they didn't already resolve from making the Pocket 4K.

Speaking of which, I had a couple of the original BM Cinema Camera. Wooooah was that thing a dumpster fire. Laid off the 4k version due to all the sensor issues. Our UMP has been a bit better. Curious to see how this 6k pocket cam does. A friend of mine is already testing one and i'm told you need to budget 2-3k for batteries plus enough to hire a guy to sit there and hot swap them one after another. I guess you could just use a power brick but who wants cables?

We use the pocket 4k on smaller jobs and those cameras absolutely require an external power source to avoid constant battery swaps. If you're doing swaps, it's about 30-40 minutes. The $2-3K claim seems exorbitant. That said, a single v-mount battery at 150Wh will last most of the day. Minimal wires. The cameras are really cool when you don't have to shoot for long durations. I especially like that I can use a native lens, small battery, and cfast card to have a small camera on the go. Still, I preferred the UMP over the P4K.

I think a lot of the people compare the sensor size with a speedbooster when comparing the 4K vs the 6K, but I feel like this is ridiculous and they are both plenty big.

The real differences are:

-15 minutes less battery life on the 6K
-No raw settings other than 6K and no Prores settings higher than 4K (at least for now)
-Slightly more front heavy form factor that doesn't fit into certain Pocket 4K cages
-Slightly more highlight dynamic range on the pocket 6K.
-Better slowmotion on pocket 6k
At the end of the day, decide if those tradeoffs/pros are worth double the price to you for the higher resolution. For most people, the 4K model is likely enough.
