Hey guys,

I'm sending my Marshall in for repair (screen came loose and shows purple color cast), and I'm about to embark on an Alaskan journey w/ Red Scarlet & 5D3.

I need a temp., small, cheap HDMI monitor that I can swap between cameras. 4-7".

Any recommendations? I'll probably never use it again (just keep it as a backup when the Marshall returns), so looking to spend under $300.

I would have ordered something, but wasn't sure if there were compatibility issues with Scarlet and certain HDMI monitors.

Thanks in advance!

Crap, that's what I figured. I guess those Chinese 3.5" EVFs that companies such as IndiPRO Tools are slapping their names across are incompatible.

Thanks for the info...may just go for something that's a little pricier. I've heard mixed reviews about the SmallHD DP4, but could use something like that for travel/lightweight gigs.

Hey Ryan
I use one of these ......

As a reference monitor out in the field accepts RED Hdmi. Also can be powered by V mount (with an adapter) or better still Canon E6 batteries.

P.S if you want something smaller & cheaper they've got that to.

Does that work at 1080p or do you need to drop the HDMI down to 720p to use it? I've heard bad things about Lilliput and RED HDMI but that may have just been the cheaper model... I think they do an HD-SDI one which is a little more expensive as well.

@ Andrew
Outputs At 1024 x 600 wtf ever that is ? mine also has the HD-SDI but this doesn't work with Red hence I didn't mention it.

Hi Mike, 1024 x 600 is the resolution of the screen, I was asking if you need to change the HDMI output settings in the camera to be 720p instead of the 1080p default setting to make the monitor work. Were you saying the HDMI output comes out at 1024 x 600, the same as the screen?

So your model also has an HD-SDI input, this model you've linked to is not the exact model you have confirmed works with RED signals? I'm just hesitant because I've heard of issues with some of the Lilliput models.

Ryan, doesn't the SmallHD DP4 solve your problem? Sure it's about $100 more than $300 but you'll get the service and I'd say the resell value is higher - or keep it as a cheap backup for whenever something else could go wrong EDIT: or keep as a cheap viewfinder.

I know you specifically asked for something different, but just wanted to remind you of the options out there.

Go with the SmallHD as long as you don't need perfect color accuracy. They can be hard to dial in the color. However, in terms of sharpness and feature set, hard to beat for the price. And you can add an viewfinder attachment to it as well.

Thanks guys,

I agree, the SmallHD seems to be the best bet. Proven compatibility, will work with my 5D3, and as you said, can turn into a viewfinder as well. I travel a lot and would love something that small for easy transporting.

Edit: went with the DP4...anyone considering it as a travel monitor, feel free to ask me for advice after next weekend

I have the SmallHD DP4 and it's great. I bought the EVF kit for my AF100 before the Scarlet era, and my AC still uses it to pull focus (but I never use the EVF portion anymore). You can power it from the ptap and not worry about batteries. It's solid, small and light. It has HMDI passthrough so my paralinx works with it. I considered selling it, but I can't bring myself to do it, as it comes in handy too often.

I also have a 9" liliput, but it crops the image out of the Scarlet...so be careful with those

Thanks Steven...makes me feel better about my purchase. I really & truly like the lightest, smallest Scarlet setups possible, and will never invest in a Touch since I switch between a wide variety of camera bodies. I have a feeling I'll use the DP4 a good deal, even after the Marshall returns.
