  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K

No question about that. He is very smart. I suppose he could stick a glass block in it and gain some space back but.... I wouldn't. Besides- who needs FF if you already have so many wonderful options in S35 cine lenses having been around for a century? Oh wait you don't- this camera is EF only ....;-)

Their are a lot of cine lenses with an EF mount.

I think most people with this camera will use EF(s) still lenses for various reasons, for the professionals there is always the upcoming attachment for the Hydrogen(voted as one of the best tech products of the year 2018).

I admit I just looked into this and he is a very clever fellow. He must have noticed no permanent front glass over the BM sensor so he can utilize the full space and apparently make up the needed space. Very impressive perceptive, creative thinking, congrats!!!

+1 but I wonder how it would stay precisely in place without tilt/shift problem.

The cylinder inside the EF mount screws in and also helps to hold the sensor glass on, so I think it's pretty secure. It's a simple matter of swapping it out for one fitted with glass.

My biggest gripe is I've seen all of the tests using screw on IR cut, the IR cut built into certain 3rd party OLPFs, and the IR cut replacement for the Ursa Mini Pro Magicbooster. The color shift is very minimal for the IR reduction that you get. It seems like it would be a very easy fix for Blackmagic to source a new IR cut filter for the new cameras that they release instead of using the same one?

It would be great to have the IR pollution fixed on the Pockets with the speedbooster coating. It’s obviously less present than on the HD Version but the 4K still has IR pollution, I don’t know for the 6k one.

Blackmagic has the same IR glass in front of every camera they've ever made. Any differences in performance are due to the sensor differences and/or the new Gen 4 color science, which I believe was modified to reduce IR slightly.

It would cost very little for Blackmagic to source a new IR cut supplier, and the guy who runs Lucadapter has tested many options, so I would not be surprised if he starts selling some IR fitlers sometime soon.

Here's the thing about BM (Savanah Miller alluded to some of this).
1. This camera will probably not be readily available for about a year, if not more. The P4K was released last year, still out of stock everywhere. This is been their MO (and even worse sometimes) with almost every single camera they have released.
2. This camera will probably have major QC issues. All of their cameras do (problems lessen over time, but BM seems to have no QC to speak of).
3. I would not trust a BM camera on a professional job unless I had a backup. I personally will not buy one until this changes. Or, I could be wrong and BM magically reverses all of this with this release (one can only hope).

It amazes me that this company can have the manufacturing issues that it does (not being able to produce enough to meet demand, spotty quality control) and still have as many rabid followers as it does. There are other more reliable/professional choices even at or close to their price points and I realize that price is one of dozens of factors to consider, but so are the ones listed above.

The BMPCC6K is... better in many ways than a professionel camera with an according price.

How long have you been using this camera?

I don't think the Pocket 6K will have major issues and I think they can deliver in a reasonable time. Blackmagic quality control seems fine, I think there's just a lot more people who tend to complain.

Blackmagic cameras are reliable, and if they really had serious issues, many people would not willingly choose to use Blackmagic (but they do).

Sure, Blackmagic is not perfect, but they've come a long way. I think most of the negative stereotypes around Blackmagic is because their cameras are priced in the amateur price bracket so a lot of clueless people get frustrated when they can't produce good looking images.

You should work as a spokesman for a politician, you have talent for that.
This is the full line
The BMPCC6K is a consumer camera for a consumer price which is better in many ways than a professionel camera with an according price.

I haven't been using this camera, but looking at the BRAW samples so far, it's pretty safe to say that it beats camera's like the MYSTERIUM-X on all points and many others on many points(resolution, codec, TCO, weight, sizes,...).

1. It was in store all over the world (demand for BMD camera's has often been higher than production rate).
2. How long have you been using this camera?
3. I have more trust in BlackmagicDesign than in a politicians spokesman.

The 6k pocket is shipping and many already have it a few days after it was announced. Funny as I know many still waiting for the 4k...

Yes, BM has had quality issues. My first went back to BM twice, 1st time with a dead pixel, then with a problem with communication with my old EF 50mm f1.0. No problems with my G2 so far.

to be honest though, its such a cheap camera, why not have two. this is really a more professional solution than trust a single more reliable camera. I remember the early days in my career where you wouldn't go out without a main stills camera body and a couple of back up cameras. Back in the film days with stills - cameras broke down all the time0- especially those fragile hassleblads! But professionalism was kept in check with redundancy.

as for reliability, it only seemed like yesterday I was on TVC's with the red one and they shot with two cameras side by side as one would always be crashing, and the start up times would be ridiculous. So they quickly changed cameras without the client noticing.
BM cameras will be more reliable in time, just like Reds have ended up. But at this super cheap price and are getting pretty reliable, having a second body on the ready is a no brainer. You can also do a two camera setup.

Paul

Body isn’t simple “plastic” per se, but carbon fiber doped/reinforced polycarbonate.

It's a less simple polycarbonate which is plastic, reinforced by carbon fibre marketing bits.

It has bigger intake inputs for the cooling and it's not a plastic it's carbon reinforced plastic

So it's not plastic but it's plastic.

like the RED CF camera's.

No it isn't.

Tunnel vision enchanted by Black Magic.

Of course it's out of stock when the product is put on market before it's ready while its pricing is low balled to destroy the competition and hijack the demand.

2. This camera will probably have major QC issues. All of their cameras do

Yes quality and quantity are often in reverse-proportional relation.

Especially when you don't own a factory but aim to under cut those who do.

I think most of the negative stereotypes around Blackmagic is because their cameras are priced in the amateur price bracket so a lot of clueless people get frustrated when they can't produce good looking images.

A lot of clueless people are unaware of the bias so subdued by it, project according to it.

To summarise you're saying

delays in delivery,
QC,
trust on real jobs
and rabid followers...

You know there was a time not very long ago that you could have seen the same kinds of utterances about the namesake of this board. I know many that still think not much has changed in that regard either.

I think most of the negative stereotypes around Blackmagic is because their cameras are priced in the amateur price bracket so a lot of clueless people get frustrated when they can't produce good looking images.

And also volume, I think BMD sell at least twenty cameras to every RED camera for example. There's a lot more out there, and as you say, many of them are new to these kinds of workflows.

But professionalism was kept in check with redundancy.

as for reliability, it only seemed like yesterday I was on TVC's with the red one and they shot with two cameras side by side as one would always be crashing, and the start up times would be ridiculous. So they quickly changed cameras without the client noticing.

I had similar experiences. Multiple bodies was always and still is today, the best form of back up.

Yes quality and quantity are often in reverse-proportional relation.

Especially when you don't own a factory but aim to under cut those who do.

Please do elaborate. You're making an inference and I want to understand what it is that you're saying.

A lot of clueless people are unaware of the bias so subdued by it, project according to it.

Indeed.

Please do elaborate.

The "indeed" part suggests the sense of the attempt.

I choose to congratulate the engineering team and graphic design team instead.

Quote from online reviewer
“impressions to me show that this could very well be the best camera atm for web series and stuff, dunno the footage to me had that web serirs vibe written all over it, that Indie Web Series vibe.“

STOP BASHING CAMERA MANUFACTURERS !

Or one day we will only have 1 blue tool to work with.

I’ve used BMPCC (HD version) for a cinema movie and the picture was great, not to speak about the size. Some minor hiccups but nothing to be a deal breaker.

I hate the reliability argument the haters are using.
Because every manufacturers have technical oddness even the one with the blue logo.

Cherish all new tools coming to market please.

Pat

This is just throwing shade.

Or....just pointing out a small part of what's missed in it due to initial infatuation.

You either think they don't own a factory or you know they do but you're just inferring they don't.

Which one is it ?

I see you have kept interest in my thought process although already decided of its value, after the suggested likelihood of curiosity becoming satisfied.

Others with a different set of priorities can focus on the point of the statements within the accurate context.

Or just pointing out what's missed in it due to initial infatuation.

So that's twice you have refused directly the question I put to you.

A really simple question.

Being cryptic and talking in circles isn't debate. It speaks directly to credibility that you won't answer or clarify such a direct question.

Perhaps I misunderstand you. Pease answer directly so we can all understand what you mean. We can talk openly about issues can't we ? Why avoid answering ?
