  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New arri camera at IBC

Hi Tom,

If the pictures are better than the D21 and ISO is 800, there will be a good market for them. Remember the took almost 10 years to sell 1000 x 435's.

Stephen

I understand it's a different market. As Mullen has pointed out many times, Arri can definitely carve out space in digital cinema where studios care more about reliability and workflow than price.

Any on-board recording or is that extra?

Graeme

There is on board recording (including uncompressed). I doubt that comes with the camera, but neither does a drive for the RED. I imagine the Arri solution to be a little less affordable though.

They're apparently slightly better than the D21 in terms of image and have 12.1 f-stops of dynamic range.

With the lights on.

That was posted on the page before this.

There are 3 pdfs with specs on the cameras, sensor and EVF. I would upload them but they are too big for the site to let me. I think they are released tomorrow anyway.

Cost makes it a rental for a lot of Red One owners/could be owners. I understand that uncompressed RAW is a great thing to have, but no option to compress it effectively makes this rental-only camera only a rental for high budgeted shows. (Could this be a factor for their decision to go with 3.5k?)

Either way, big shows certainly appreciate the Arri reliability seal. But, Red is taking their time. It seems they are likely taking the steps necessary to release an Epic-X that will be able to get on the same reliability category. I consider it a given, since it is the next step necessary to ensure Red will continue growing into that next tier. They pretty much grew as much as they could where they are now. Red needs to expand up and down, HVX-Scarlet and Epic-435. It's eminent... Red will own the world by 2027. :)

its confusing now---

some think red is in danger because of the canon 7d, and now it is in danger because of a 100 000 usd arricam?

dont know, but when i look to my account related to the pictures i get red is right now the best bang for the buck.

what i guess is a pro on the arri is that all i/O connectors are build in the body and no adaptors are needed (dont know if they have a downconverter included).

i just hope that epic/scarlet get a fantastic I/O Cinemodule...and that a lot of cables (every cable except the LCD cable) are erased and the whole cine-modules end up in a ergonomic cinecamera.

80 GB ssd cards would be cool too

BTW: Is the arricam tungsten or daylight balanced?

Meanwhile, I'll get back to recording 4480 x 1920 pixel 12-bit RAW data to my 16GB CF card...

When can we do that to a 32gb card - I'm getting antsy to reduce the size weight and heat inside U/W housings by eliminating the drive. 32GB would get us enough time to make it reasonable to do that.

PRETTY PLEASE. It's been 2 and half years since 8GB LEXAR 300X, something should be possible by now.

But will they even attempt to go near Red pricing?

Good point.. will epic have built in down converter?
doubt it due to politics, but it def should have that option

Man, it feels like I drew that thing once...

Where's my cut, Arri?

Brook, I forwarded Arri those sketches last year. Your "design fees" are safely in my pocket. I will be thinking of you when I'm sipping $15 Piña Coladas in Belize.....:cheers2:

my questions are...

1. i do not see enough heat mitigation in these photos.

2. can they manufacturer these in a timely manner and in enough quantities to matter to our market place. (although it took a little time to ramp up, red has proven that their lineage at oakley is transferrable and that utilizing economies of scale to drive down prices works).

3. in that regard, i remember the d21 at nab 2007 and it was not until the last 3 or 4 months that people have actually started to use them on jobs, i.e take delivery of them fully built out with all the support, camera house just got 4 a few weeks ago...that is about 29 months after seeing the prototype at a tradeshow...i am imagining that in 29 months, red will have released epic, scarlet and are onto their 3rd generation camera "dino" paying homage to ferrari and of course their most loyal foot soldier. (ha ha ha ha ...just kidding).

4. if rental house owners are telling me about this camera 3 -4 months ago, i am sure red black ops has had these babies in their sights for probably over a year, and that goes for the 7d too, remember big john was at canon before he joined red, so i am sure he knew where the bodies where buried before he left.

5. where does the top plate go for low mode on the steadicam?

6. where does the drive go, the modulus, the lock-it?

that is all for now, but i am sure ill think of more...

i always love the underdog in movies, so i am still rooting for jim & co. to prevail in the third act.

60FPS @ 2k
Summer 2010
50,000 Euros cheapest option

It'll have its place, but RED's offerings definitely have a lot more for the money.
