  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New arri camera at IBC

The ASC and the BSC will be showing there tests at IBC, the BSC tests include material on the D21, Genesis, F35 and Red One as well as how these compare to 35mm Kodak & Fuji stocks and whilst some have done their best to discredit the tests they were shot fairly and with a number of BSC cameramen / women and each company set up there cameras to there preferred settings. The BSC included the Canon 5D MKII and a number of 2/3" cameras (tested against super 16 film) and lower end HD camera like the Sony EX3. Sue Gibson BSC President and Joe Dunton BSC will be there.

They maybe 3.5K sensors but with Arri they will be true 3.5K, they also understand the need for true dynamic range and they will be true to Rec 709 throw in 75 years of knowledge of the movie businessmakes them a formidable high end opponent.
Pawel Achtel is right they dont need to be cheaper, they do need to be better.

I'd go speak to a guy at Arri about sampling theory if I were you. They know how sensors work, resolution, MTF and optical low pass filters.

Any sensor, any type has rows of pixels. Say it has 3.5k pixels across. It cannot have a >0% MTF at 3.5k rez unless it is allowing for significant aliasing errors. MTF should be 0% at full rated rez, giving a measurable resolution somewhat less than full rated rez to avoid gross aliasing artifacts and artificial looking edges.

Not sure what is meant by "true 3.5K." It's Bayer type sensor like the Red.
 
True "x"k where x is some sensor horizontal pixel count doesn't make sense. Due to how sampling works you either have:

0% MTF at x -> implies you don't meet the rated resolution of the sensor, and hence it's not "true"

>0% MTF at x -> implies you have aliasing, which means some image details are corrupted, hence it's not "true"

But people are lead to believe you can have >0% MTF at full resolution with no drawbacks. This is just so not the case. I've spoken to Arri engineers and they fully understand this also.

What Arri does is a valid approach - 3k sensor (properly optically low pass filtered) designed primarily for 2k output - you demosaic the 3k and downsample to 2k. Or you record the full 3k as raw and demosaic in post.

That's similar to what RED does - 4k (and more) sensors (properly optically low pass filtered) designed for full resolution raw recording. In post you can leave as full rez or decode and downsample.

I guess the lower resolution in Arri's approach makes it easier to get more sensitivity (Vs a higher resolution sensor) as the photosites are larger.
 
No idea until someone can point an Arri at a test chart (Stouffer wedge).

Photosite size should correspond somewhat with dynamic range / sensitivity, but each and every chip maker has their own photosite design, and atod converter design, associated electronics etc etc. which all contribute to the final result. Hence, in the end, you've got to point the camera at a chart.

and on the price.... lets just say its a rental

When the ceo of arri was talking about this new camera at the start of the year, I think he was saying that it will be smaller than the d21/d20. I suspect it will be around the size of a 416. We will see very soon how the ergonomics pan out....Arri cameras are traditionally pretty good on that front.....not as good as aaton's, but certainly better than the red one. Hopefully the ergonomics of epic/scarlet will be better.
 
Looks like its in the Red One ballpark, Size and ergo wise.

Hi Tom,

If the pictures are better than the D21 and ISO is 800, there will be a good market for them. Remember the took almost 10 years to sell 1000 x 435's.
