  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Compact Flash Summary Roundup- Quest for a 16gb or higher RED compliant CF CARD

Transcend 16GB UDMA 300x

Transcend 16GB UDMA 300x

We've been trying one out with good results at 2K. Actually trying it in the camera, no other more accurate testing. We haven't even tried at 4k since I wouldn't trust the card for that much data.

Lexicon mentioned the Transcend 32 GB 300x UMDA card.

Has anyone tested it yet?

AFAIK, it's just like the others. Fast read speeds but shitty write speeds. Many of them are making cards that are just good enough for DSLR use where the camera buffer picks up the slack in write performance but they crack when put to the test with something that requires the full write speeds that the Sandisk/Lexar cards are capable of.

Both the microdia and transcend cards are not fast enough.

There is nothing out there thats currently fast enough because of either controller issues or because they're using stacked MLC flash to get the higher densities.

We are working on a solution for 16GB cards...

Dual slot RAID?

That's a pretty good idea - you could have an interface that slotted into Red's Compact Flash module like a normal CF card would, and then had a dual slot on the back of it. This way Red can always stay one step ahead of the tortuous wait for CFs to double in capacity (maybe we're already reaching the limits of what this generation of CF cards can do speed-wise?) Apparently we about two years away from the next generation of CF (CFast) and that won't be backwards compatible anyway.

I saw a DIY SSD drive the other day that could take up to 3 Compact Flash cards that could be set up in a fast Raid 0 array (you'd just need to find a way of interfacing it with the Red (Sata?) and get Red to write a bit of code for it). Some people I've spoken to are a bit nervous about having their data split over two cards but I think as long as they're kept in a housing (essentially just like an SSD) then there's no way they can get mixed up.

So, is there a 8 or 16 gig card I can use while I wait for my Drive and/or 16gig CFs???? That would get me thru the next couple of days and move them into my DSLR pool after I get some media.

thanks,
Prio

Just saw the brand new Sony 306x 16GB cards, to be used with their HDV and EX camcorders. No idea if they are fast enough. And they aren't that much cheaper than Red's 16GB so probably not worth the trouble.
