Tempted to change my v-lock package preorder to body only and seeing if I could pick up a used 5 inch LCD. In order to have more flexibility with the new monitor, I'd need to buy $400 in LEMO adapters (A + B styles) plus cable, then mount it all with an accessory arm. It's a shame they didn't follow the 7-inch design.

Anyone else annoyed by the fact that the monitor can only tilt forward/back?

this is why i bought a used 5 inch touch here on reduser. figure ill start with a LEMO adapter A, then decide on one of the top plates offered by a 3rd party with the Lemo port built in. was gonna just go with the wooden camera one, but looks like at least 3 week minimum if you pre order now, prob wait till nab to see what others come out with

I'm going to see if I can swap that one for the 7" in my package and pay the difference. I own the old 5" touch but I've used the 7" touch on a few jobs recently and I find it hard to go back. On the 7" it's so easy to judge focus even without focus assist.

highly doubt they will allow that. I tried to order a 240gb instead of the 120 and they said no go. SKU# problem etc. the package is the package. Went for the brain only then added a vlock expender. i have mini mags already so ill wait to re-up on those

Back when he preorders began and I put mine in, I was contacted by a Bomb Squad rep for my area. I asked about the possibility of exchanging the Canon mount in the package for a Nikon mount and she said the packages aren't modifiable.

So now the package has a couple dings against it for me: a Canon mount I don't need and a 4.7" monitor that doesn't rotate. Plus, I was planning on getting two 512GB SSDs and just having the 120gb from the package as a backup. But that's an extra card I don't necessarily need either. Signs are pointing toward body only...

its hard to pass up a "deal" but if it doesnt fit it doesnt fit.. i struggled with the same issues. in the end the brain only made more sense for me =(

on the up side. LOTS of great deals on used dsmc parts that still work on dsmc2.... speaking of which seeking another canon mount...

Before I go about changing my order, anyone have things I'm not recognizing? Just curious if the new LCD is better in other ways (other than the DSMC2 compatibility) that I haven't realized.

Yeah, when I added it up, piece for piece, the package basically ended up with me getting an almost free Nikon mount (vs. buying all the same pieces individually from RED). But that was when I included all the items, like the Canon mount and SSD. If I consider the fact that I won't really use a Canon mount ever (I can rent if needed), I wouldn't need the 120GB SSD, and I'd be buying $400 in lemo adapters... I think I'd save money and have a more versatile kit if I pieced it together myself.

i think its appeal comes from its newness.. however for me 5.5 >4.7 flip + rotate > flip only and to be honest i like the idea of mixing old school with new flavor

The new LCD is 1280 x 720, the older one 800 x 480 I think. The new 315 ppi makes a huge difference.

Well that's good. I guess if they won't let me swap it out I'll just either sell the 4.7" or keep it as a backup or second monitor.

I tried the monitor and the scarlet W at the bsc expo in the UK , for me is very clear and is very easy to focus with it. Just placed my order today :)

the old one is standard definition and the new one is HD, 720, it's a huge difference in quality.

While it is unfortunate that the screen doesn't rotate, I plan on using my existing SDI/HDMI monitors on it as well (I can use both the 4.7" screen and one SDI/HDMI monitor at the same time right?)

....also can the new 4.7" monitor be mounted backwards (so that the screen faces forward?)

I believe it can. I believe it can also be mounted to the side pins in either direction (so the screen can go up or fold down against the body). Thinking about this actually is making me lean toward keeping the kit preorder... And to your point, I already have a SmallHD 502 and a Zacuto Gratical HD, hahaha, so I suppose I'm pretty well covered on the monitor front.

The connectors are keyed. There is only one way to mount them. On top facing back, or on side facing out if you fold it upwards.

Saw the 4.7" when Red Recon stopped in SF. Completely changed my view from "eBay ASAP" to "I'll use this as my main monitor" - it's small, yes, but I was throughly impressed with the quality of RED's entry level display. Crisp, clear, and doesn't have that shiny RED PRO 5.0 on the back of the monitor, which I appreciate. To each their own. If you get the chance to see the new and old display side by side, it'll just make your decision that much harder :)
