NATURAL HISTORY CINEMATOGRAPHY

Thank you Mike,it is always a pleasure and a satisfaction when the job is done and the EP is happy with it!

Wish you all the best!

Great shots Max! And if I may I would just like to put in a word for Max, regarding his work and ethics. For the past year Max has worked on a pilot project of mine. It is a children's STEM educational program where children research a science topic and then produce a short form documentary on the subject. Max donated his time and his team cost and equipment rental to the project. He found a a small group of local school children who worked together to write and direct a short 5 minute film that answers the question. "Where does your water come from?" Max also was kind enough to donate some of his file footage for b-roll in the film.

As the EP on the project, I can not say enough good things about working with Max. We have never met in person and our working relationship is based on online chats and emails. He has come through in every aspect and far exceeded my expectations on this project. The children and teachers in the other participating schools just loved their little doc and now know where and how people in Tasmania get their water. And thanks to Max, they also got see what a beautiful part of the world Tasmania is. Can't thank Max and his production team enough for helping me get this film made and shared, Cheers Mates!

Hi Mike,
Really great to hear that you got your job delivered and that you're happy with it. I think it's wonderful that you put up personal monies
for such a worthwhile project - the world needs more people like you!!!

best
joe

Thank you guys!
Chad, Not sure on the release date yet, it is not my baby. It is a coproduction between my company and Nedo Films from Chile. Rene Araneda is the director and producer. I am in charge of the cinematography in conjunction with my son Christiaan.

I’m using a RED ONE with a sigma 50-500mm to film wildlife in Portugal since the beginning of this year, but I’m counting on buying a RED EPIC DRAGON in the beginning of next year.

I don’t know very well what accessories to buy, so will put a list of accessories I intent to buy, all accessories cost a lot, so I intent to try to make no mistakes buying those equipments.

If you don’t mind, please give some advices on the gear I’m choosing because you all have a lot more experience than I do.

- EPIC-M RED DRAGON W/ SIDE SSD AND LENS MOUNT - Canon AL
- RED TOUCH 5.0" LCD
Or
- BOMB EVF [OLED]
(Or both if necessary)
- 2 x REDMAG 1.8" SSD - 256GB or a 512 GB, right now they are nor avayable on red store)
- +1 ADAPTOR MODULE (Need the +1Module If I buy both the LCD and EVF)
- RED BRICK (6-PACK) or similar
- Good Fast Charger for 4 batteries (some advice needed)
- AC POWER ADAPTOR (DSMC)
- EPIC PELICAN CASE 1510
- TACTICAL TOP PLATE 2.0 (if realy needed)
- DSMC FAN 2.0 UPGRADE KIT (TOP/BOTTOM) (if it really makes difference on DRAGON)
- BACKPACK QUICKPLATE (SHORT) (or similar)
- SLIDING TOP HANDLE
- SPINNER WITH BOMB EVF MOUNT PACK (if I need to buy the EVF)
- DSMC TOP MOUNT (ADJUSTABLE) (if I need to buy the EVF)
- LCD/EVF CABLE (RIGHT-TO-STRAIGHT) (for spare, don’t know what size)
- BACKPACK BASE PLATE (don´t know if is the one I should buy)
- DSMC MODULAR ASSAULT PLATE PACK (don´t know if is the one I should buy)
- QUICK RELEASE PLATFORM (DOVETAIL) (don´t know if is the one I should buy)
- DOVETAIL MOUNTING PLATE (LONG) (don´t know if is the one I should buy)
- REDMOTE (don’t know if it is really needed, and will not be able to use it with the Backpack quickplate)
- DSMC SIDE HANDLE (don’t know if it is necessary)
- other accessories that you might advice to me

I also pretend on buying some long lens (will depend on budget)...

Thanks and regards

Humberto Ramos

Hi Christian. I too am a wildlife filmmaker. Please check out my reel. I am finishing a wildlife film on elephant seals soon. I've got the Scarlet. It would be nice to get more frame rates though!

REEl - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoBW6Q0DfLo

Excellent footage, please we appreciate uf you can share some BTS and technical info...also tell us more about your Elephant Seals doc!!

Most of the footage on that reel is not shot RED since I only bought it a year ago. But I just got back from Africa and shot awesome stuff! I need to update it. Every place has it's own challenge as you know Christian. Weather it's heat, cold, humidity, darkness and tight spaces. What I value most about my shoots is that nothing is set up on stage. It's tough with out it but I also have the luxury of longer shooting times than some wildlife filmmakers. For each shoot, it takes a lot of muscle work. Almost every film I make in the wild, I'd make myself carry the camera, tripod, a jib with weights, a dolly and lenses. It looks ridiculous and it's crazy heavy but I'm an aggressive hiker and when you do what you love it doesn't matter even if it's carrying this stuff up a mountain, I never want to miss a single creative shot.

The elephant seal film took about 5 days to shoot which is not a lot of time but it was enough since the seals gave me so many stories to work with. I'll post it up here once it's finished. That was shot solely on the 60D. We would wake up at 5am and film until the sun looked like crap. offload footage on portable drives and film again at around 3ish. It was fun but tough...

Well done mate!!! A big congratulations to everyone involved!!

Cheers!
