NATURAL HISTORY CINEMATOGRAPHY

Thanks Will,
I'll try my best. ;)

For those of you that enjoy underwater-
I finally uploaded a new Blue Marlin sequence... short and sweet. These are not only very rare to see without a hook in its mouth
or dead on a pick up truck- but also as many of you they are extremely difficult to encounter- period.
It is a fun edit to promote the new sequences...

Shot with Red EpicX / Sigma 15 inside an Amphibico Rouge housing.

Hi Mauricio,
I totally forgot to ask you something about this sequence.
Was their fishermen around?
What is the thing who attract the Marlin in the water?
Marlin is such a beautifull creature.
Cheers.
B.

Hello Brice

Thank you for your note.
The only way to get these fish to come close is to attract them with lures and teasers.... there are no hooks at the end of my lines just colorful
teasers that entice (attract) them to come up to the surface... it is very difficult work and there are no guarantees. For every encounter there are days or weeks of waiting.

Their visit to the surface may last all but 30 seconds!

Thanks for looking!. MH

Thanks for the explanation Mauricio. So I guess the golden sequence to track is a Blue Marlin hunting in surface real fishes. It is a damn good challenge to do. It's funny, it look like at first the Marlin doesn't really believe in it and just play with the lures. Best B.

Good to see this thread still going strong! In my opinion natural history camera work is among the most challenging genres of camera work in the world. There are some really excellent examples of natural history work on this thread.

As many of you here may know I shoot a lot of natural history documentaries, action sports, adventure travel, etc. with lightweight mobile EFP style Epic rigs, outfitted with various types of zooms. I'm also an annually invited judge of full programs and crafts (directing, cinematography, etc.) each year for various national Emmy Awards competitions (Documentary, Sports, etc.), Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, and many other award systems.

Also, in case someone here may be interested, yesterday I put up a thread on the Marketplace: 3rd Party Gear forum. I'm selling a Sigma 150-500 f/5-6.3 OS HSM APO Autofocus. Its in as-new condition and comes with a lens case. If you're interested please visit the thread I posted for more details, price, and how to contact me.

Testing the new Canon 200-400 with RED

Testing the new Canon 200-400 with RED

Hi everyone! This summer I was lucky enough to use the new Canon 200-400 shooting in some of the most famous seabird colonies in the UK. My thoughts are this is an amazing lens for wildlife, not very heavy, smooth focus and zoom, and the built in 1,4X extender is really useful. The image quality is fantastic as expected in a lens this price range, quite similar to a prime lens. It was a joy to use it on the Epic and even I could achieve some nice flying shots of gannets and puffins ;) And of course filming seabirds was FUN.
I´ve added some frame grabs (if you need the original r3ds just let me know) and in this link you can see some clips shot with the lens:

Cheers to all, keep up the good work and all the luck with your projects!

The Canon 200 400mm lens is exceptional for wildlife. Like any long lent make sure it has good support and the base plate is aligned correctly vertically and laterally as it can bend the mount, motion mounts are susceptible in particular.

We also prefer using LLO OLPF as the lens it f4 and if used with a motion mount needs all the light it can particularly if using Motion mount and an additional doubler.

We set the lens up on the bench and leave the base plate screws loose till the lens is tight then tighten the base plate mounts to ensure correct alignment laterally as on some rigs the lens front mounting support can be out several millimetres if the bridge plate and riser plate have play in them, its very important they are correctly aligned.

For puffins and other stuff you can just walk up to then yes, but for a lot of stuff it's so short - even with the converter engaged it's only equivalent to about 250mm on a 2/3" camera. That's why the new Canon 50-1000 is what we've all been waiting for - pricey though of course even compared to the 200-400!
