  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

So I got an email asking for payment for the EPIC-X upgrade.

Trouble is its way earlier than I thought it would be, and in the fine print, it says if you dont pay up within 5 days your camera gets marked as executed.

I sincerely hope this isn't as cut and dry as it sounds. I thought I had at least a couple more months to get that cash together.

yes andrew thats the problem im so happy this is happening but how im gonna find 9.5k $ in 5 days..even bank wire takes 6 days to Red from Turkey

I find it completely unacceptable to out of the blue ask for immediate payment or you lose your upgrade. To say if you dont pay you find yourself at the back of the line is one thing, but this?

If you ordered it, asking for payment isn't exactly out of the blue though, is it? I understand the frustration, but this scenario has been mentioned multiple times since the orders were opened up, and the info was out there, available to everyone. I hope you're able to figure something out, it would be a shame to lose your upgrade capabilities over something like this, but RED and many members of the community have been making this fact known to any who planned on placing orders.

Where has this been mentioned? On this forum?

For something this important I would categorically expect it in writing from my rep. I have never, in 5 years and 6 cameras of buying from red had this kind of ultimatum presented to me.

I haven't put in my order for an upgrade yet because of this.

I'm waiting to have the money and then I'll get in the back of the line so that I have plenty of time to gather the money.

I wasn't in the R1 to Epic upgrade program, but it was this same way with that program. That's mainly how I knew that it was this way.

There has been some talk of this same thing in either this thread or the Dragon Sensor Upgrade Begins thread. Almost positive.

Really? I upgraded 2 MXs and dont remember this at all....

It's very possible that you just missed it and you had the money when they asked for it.
That way no problem arose, but it was definitely there.

Once the camera is executed, it's executed.

Maybe they will help you out though, have you called your Bomb Squad Rep?

Ive emailed.

Hoping for a quick response......

The issue isnt that I want to cancel my order, its that I cannot hope to get the money to them within a week. I remember with the MX upgrades basically getting an email saying "get ready, your reservation is coming up" but this time nothing.....

I read it in one of the early notices. And fully expected the program to start right away. It was the main reason I went with the Epic upgrade instead of Dragon. I know there wasn't any dates mentioned but it was made clear that if you ordered an upgrade and had to back out your camera was no longer eligible for the upgrade. I don't agree with that but it was there in writing.

I read this forum as much as the next guy, but burying an important piece of information like that amid 2,376 "you guys rock" posts doesn't work as well as letting the customer know when they order.

I would have expected something so important to come as a "are you sure?" warning via email before the order was confirmed.

Same problem here in Germany.
Mailed my rep in UK and Germany---still now answer. Let alone, that tomorrow is a holiday over here, I lose one more day.

Ive just discovered my wife has thrown out my Scarlet box. We are in the process of relocation, and for what ever reason, she classed the box as needing to be thrown out. No way to get it back either................

Seems like two threads are being discussed with the same people on the same topic so hopefully we can wrap this discussion into just this thread.

Let's be perfectly clear, if you signed up for a trade-in / upgrade pre-order, you placed an order with RED, right? When your spot in line comes up, you are expected to be able to submit payment. Isn't this how purchases online work? You order, when your item is ready to be fulfilled, you pay?

If you cannot pay within the 5 business day window as stated in the email, you have two options:

1 - Speak to your rep and see if they can extend the window of payment for you. They will accommodate you within reason. Days, cool. Months, no - see option 2.
2 - You can cancel your trade-in order. Your serial number will remain executed. BUT if you want to place your order again for the SAME trade-in option, you can at a later date. The serial number execution is attached to what you placed the trade-in pre-order for. So, if you decide to go that route at a later point, you can - your rep can do that for you. You just go to back of the line.

NOTE: As Jarred said, all good things come to an end. When each of these upgrade/trade-in programs close their doors, we will not be accepting new orders for them. So, don't expect to be able to go to RED.com in 2015 and trade-in your SCARLET for an EPIC M-X :001_cool:

Also, if you cancel your order, you cannot change to a different trade-in option other than the one you originally ordered. For planning purposes, we need to know how many people in each bucket.

I don't know what other camera company offers these upgrades. I don't know many other companies that let you speak to a dedicated rep to help you out if you have extenuating circumstances, etc. Personally, I am not seeing how we are "screwing" anyone over by saying "you placed an order, now please pay so we can process it"?

Hi Brent,

Can you at least give us a ballpark time of how long we have the ability to place an order for the Scarlet to Epic upgrade? I mean I don't have the funds now so there is no point in waiting in line and then needing to send in payment within 5 days. It would help me budget. Are we talking at least 12 months or only within 6 months or other?

Considering what an Epic used to cost vs the cost of a Scarlet, the upgrade option is pretty amazing really. Wish I had a Scarlet to upgrade as I'd have saved $$$ (well £££).

RED is/has (& hopefully will continue) to be accommodating as far as they can... but it's swinging around to be a 'business' more than a 'club' now (as per the Epic slashes a while ago and Jim's comments back then).

I'm sure the Reps will give some 'slack' n particular cases.

My empty boxes live in the shed and garage - designated 'WFZ's' (Wife Free Zones)! LOL :)

I guess some anxiety may be coming from the 'executed' terminology... I had taken that to mean that the upgrade was a one time offer - i.e. pay up when its your turn or miss out.

Brent, am I reading your post correctly that if one were not to be in a position to go ahead with an upgrade its just a position in line thats lost, not the option to ever upgrade that camera?

I think that where some people may be confused is they thought when waiting in line, if they were not ready, that their camera would not be permanently executed.

Has not been discussed here yet, sorry.
