  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

In the online FAQ on red.com though it mentions that the Dragon sensor isn't covered by red armour, and simply gets a 90 day warranty. That being said, some people in the Armor thread say the MX Sensor wasn't even covered in Red Armor.

Yeah seems the sensor is covered by a 90 day warranty and the rest of the camera is covered by the Armour for however long you have left. It's not a 100 percent clear though if the extra other parts that's being exchanged is gonna be covered as well? But It seems to me the 90 day only goes for the actual sensor and everything else goes for the armour.

Now if I upgrade my Scarlet to an EPIC-mx will the Armour that I got 2 years left on cover the EPIC?? Or if I go all the way and upgrade both at the same time (and get an Epic Dragon at once) get covered? That's another question.

what a great gif.... I hope it would be safe to assume that we will get the full specs of it thursday when we can begin preordering the upgrade. I'm sure the whole RED website will be updated as well. Here is hoping at least but until then lets just beat this horses poor soul some more;-)

For anyone interested, I just spoke to my bomb squad rep about the potential to upgrade now to a Scarlet Dragon and then upgrade the Scarlet Dragon to an Epic Dragon at a later stage (instead of say upgrading now to an Epic-X and then Upgrading to an Epic Dragon later). I was told that all the details they really know have been posted here but that there are no plans to offer an upgrade from Scarlet Dragon to Epic Dragon so, if you want your endgame to be an Epic Dragon, you should definitely choose the Epic upgrade path...

Hi brother from another mother, thanks! This is one of the key factors in the decision making process - but it will also depend on Scarlet's frame rates, if it can do something close to 100 in 4K, that's good enough for me.

Hey there bro! Yeah I figured others might be interested in this info. The frame rates are definitely the other part of the equation for me too. 100 fps at 4.5k would tip it for me so I can still get a nice 4k debayer happening...

My guess is we'll find out more on Thursday when preorders open. I'm guessing 4K 75fps, 3K 100fps, 2K 150fps, pretty much half FPS per K of the Epic Dragon.

I think 6K on Scarlet Dragon will be similar to 5K on Scarlet, 12fps... We'll see soon hopefully.

Honestly, 5k @ 24fps would be worth it for me, Scarlet Dragon will do 5k @ 60fps, sold! Toss in at least 120fps at at least 3k and it's icing on the cake!

It shall be an interesting Thursday. Considering the price difference between Scarlet and Epic Dragon is much less than the original Scarlet-X and Epic-X, I'd be hoping for closer specs than what we we saw in Nov 2011.

This is going by the trade-in cost, of course. Who knows how much a direct Scarlet Dragon will be from red.com

Just something I've heard....specs are coming soon!

"Swapping the internals on the scarlet was something we found out was possible right before the show so we want to make sure we can communicate what limitations Scarlet Dragon will have."

I think Scarlet Dragon brain will be $12,000, half of Epic Dragon, with roughly half the specs (except 6K, I'm not expecting much from 6K).

Jarred said there will be a sensor crop for Scarlet Dragon. That should probably mean that you won´t use the full sensor for the minimum amount of frames for motion capturing (24 FPS).
Best bet would be 6k @ 12 fps or less. 5k @ 60 fps confirmed (!!!)

That would instantly lower the value of existing Scarlets to $2500 - I doubt anyone wants that.

That's not gonna happen. Who in their right mind wouldn't just sell their body for at least 2500 dollars, and buy an entire new one?

$12, 000 would make perfect sense... if they discontinue the current Scarlet and only offer the Scarlet Dragon. This way, the current Scarlet would retain it's value and they would bring in a whole new generation of Scarlet owners. A win win.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was 17,500 just like epic, perhaps less like 16,000, though my original guess was 14,500. But the more I think about it it makes the most sense at 17,500, I think, considering it's 9,500 to upgrade to either from the current scarlet though that could not be factoring in some crucial elements I may have overlooked.

Then again until RED knows what they can get functionally out of the scarlet maybe they don't even know heck maybe the 9,500 upgrade to Epic or SD might not even hold, only time will tell. Meanwhile I'm shooting as often as possible and saving up for some accessories(new and old) and the upcoming motion mount, and perhaps even a scarlet dragon when it's available. I plan on pushing the deadline for when I have to trade in as I would like to see the real world difference as well as earn what I can on the current set up before I can justify upgrading... then again I said that last time and ended up purchasing the scarlet as soon as I had the money together so...
