On my two previous shoots using the red m-x the DOPs have complained about a barring effect in areas of low light and areas out of focus. It looks a lot like a posterising effect on photoshop?

Is this the norm with the red EVF? If not is there any way to stop/ prevent it?

Thanks

Within reason yes. If it starts to go sort of green/solarized, you need to restart the viewfinder (unplug it, and plug it back in). Unfortunately you have to sort of learn what the peculiarities of the VF are and then be confident that they are not on the footage.

Sean, I have had this problem with my EVF. It shows posterizing even in moderate temperature conditions. I sent it in to Red service department and they weren't able to replicate the issue and they said that the EVF works fine. I tried a couple different cables and there is the same exact issue. This leads me to believe that it is something to do with the body itself. I haven't had a chance to send the body in because it is being used but I plan on sending it as soon as I am able.

This started happening to me about a month ago, and I just got the EVF back from Red yesterday. I am going to check it out later today and I will tell you how it goes.

Cheers guys.

On the first shoot we changed the EVF twice and it didn't fix the problem. On the shoot I am working on now we changed the body and still the problem remains.

Just seems strange but I can confirm the the rushes are fine.

Dark detail was off on my side at least. Sad to say but after testing with the body after getting the EVF back from red, I still see the same problem. Looks like I might need to send the body in some time.

that problem occured to me many times: it seems to be something related to the environment where you're shooting. the first time I saw it shooting in winter, close to a lake (-5 degrees, 99% humidity) and both the evf (we where shooting with 2 ones) had that "posterizing" effect.
unfortunately there is not much to do, it's an issue of this type of evf. the only thing you can do (as suggested by nick) is to unplug and to plug it bak in, and/or to keep it for a few minutes in a dry and warm place.
you can be sure that this posterizing effect doesn't affect the rushes just watching the minimonitor: that effect doesn't appear on the lcd.

What is the barring effect you describe?

My evf maintains accurate color and there are no areas out of focus, it is just the posterization that is the problem. And also there are something that looks like dripping paint in the dark areas- hard to explain but its there.

Yeah I've heard about the problems in cold weather. It's just a bit scary that it's happening to me in sunny Southern California weather.

Take a look at the EVF screen when the camera is set tot Luma Ramp test pattern.
It should be a smooth transition from left to right, but isn't.
You'll barely make out around about 10 shades of gray, from memory.
Compare it to the LCD. You'll see many more stripes there, but it will indeed be striped, instead of smooth.
Now look at pretty much any other monitor- HDMI or HD SDI.
The Luma ramp will be smooth on there, as it should be.
That's you're problem.

There is no such issue with the new Bomb EVF, however. The luma Ramp appears smooth on it's screen.

Mark, so your saying that the EVF (old one) will not show a smooth gradient of grays? And that its normal?

There's a pretty drastic difference (in terms of gradation) when comparing the EVF (as mine is now) and the LCD. The EVF is noticeably banding more.
