  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

I'm searching but i can't find any answer: is red taking the money tomorrow or are they just taking a deposit and the rest when they'll upgrade the camera?

Jarred posted that no payments were required to make an upgrade reservation.

Sorry, it was Brent. These are from the Epic thread, but I expect the terms are the same for Scarlet.

Pre-order is getting a spot in line. For upgrade, you will be notified to pay when you are up in line. New orders, just like everything else these days, pay when ready to ship.

Eric, sorry if I was not clear, no deposit. Pre-order is getting a number in line. No money exchanged.

I'm going to keep hounding on this but... if we choose the Epic-X upgrade path can we get an Epic-X.... tomorrow? This would be a HUGE sweetening to the deal.

Just called RED and they said that all this info will be announced tomorrow. I was going to sit on the curb with my Scarlet in hand waiting to upgrade to Epic, but they told me to hold off on that. :( Everything will be announced tomorrow at some point. Can you tell I am excited?!

Excited to hear the news, after much pondering, i think we ail go the Scarlet to Epic route.

Is there any possibility of a Scarlet Dragon to Epic Dragon upgrade? Wed probably prefer the extra stops & resolution initially but would like to upgrade to Epic Dragon later for max frame rates. Thank you...

Can I upgrade my Scarlet to an Epic M?

That would be great.

What I really wonder about is: how good is the Dragon Sensor vs other competitors. As much as I want an Epic for the love of over cranking, if Dragons (including the Scarlet baby brother) are a super hot production value because they become the new buzzword, it makes me hard pressed to wanna throw that kind of coin for an MX Epic. I love the frame rates, its a wonderful camera, but at the same time its tech is more dated and I worry not going Dragon Scarlet might hurt me financially if the sensor becomes known as better than the other offerings. Insert competing brands sensor here...

PS if the specs for Dragon Scarlet reveal significant over cranking at lower K's (Like 1kws or 2k) that even come close to, or match Epic MX I think I have to go for Scarlet Dragon. The color rendition alone might make it the king of camera wars for a good year or two until the competitors get a cleaner low light option in high res/over cranks/raw

Well said. While initially thinking > epic > dragon, I'm now leaning more towards scarlet > dragon. I'm guessing all existing specs will bump up 1K. Ie 6K 12fps on down. That said, I'd love a scarlet dragon to epic dragon upgrade if RED would consider it...

Well 5k scarlet-d performance is better than 4k scarlet-x performance, but 6k is apparently not for scarlet-D.

Frankly I'll take 3 stops of latitude and far better low light performance over a couple more fps at 5k any day. high DR and high sensitivity revolutionize the images you can create and the way you work every time you use the camera. Slightly higher FPS at a higher resolution don't so much, if you need more FPS, lower your resolution, if you need both, you can rent for that one rare job. Alexa is so popular primarily because it blows all other cameras out of the water for DR, you can cite other reasons but that is 90% of it and the main reason no one cares that it eats batteries twice as fast, is twice the size, twice the price, and half the resolution of Epic-X. If dragon does what they say it can and what it looks like it will, it will be a no brainer whether to choose Scarlet Dragon or Epic MX. Scarlet Dragon has the specs to be a capable A-Camera on big jobs where Scarlet-X often came up short. If priced similarly on release, and it sounds like that is the case given these upgrade/trade-in options, I would say Epic-X will drop in price quite a bit over the next year but Scarlet Dragon will hold it's value better and be more valuable in the future.

You know which way I'm going :)

If there is one the NAB announcements from all the camera manufacturers has reminded me, its that RED's compressed RAW will probably really begin to stand out in the next year as people begin to realize how unmanageable uncompressed (canon/arri) or lightly-compressed 4k raw (sony) workflows are. People started to get a taste of this with BMCC's 130MBps 2.5k RAW footage, but that camera is still not widely available.

I got excited when they Sony said I could get 4k raw from my FS700 for not much money, but then I saw its uncompressed DPX (C-D 7Q) and realized having footage that runs ~400MBps is pretty much a deal breaker for 99% of the jobs I do.

Perfectly said. Can't agree more.
