  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

I can't seem to find or figure out how the upgrades are going to be processed. Does serial number have any bearing at all or is it first come first served?

I don't think there has been any mention of serial number, I think it is as simple as first come first served. With the Epic Dragon early adopters and Epic M owners get a three day head start, but from Thursday I'm pretty sure it is all open to anybody.

I WONDER... what the turn around will be for a Scarlet to Epic X upgrade? Assuming this will be more a swap of your Scarlet for a brand new Epic X, is this just a case of receiving and checking yours to then send a new X back? As opposed to joining a potentially long wait for a Dragon sensor.

Uggh I didnt know about this and Ive visited the booth twice today :)

Amazing, now I have to consider it.

seemed the way they described it it wasn't just a swap for a new epic x. yes there's a new body and probably new boards but presumably keep your same old chip with the same hours on it (the MX sensor). so it's not just a swap but an actual upgrade

Will I still need the ROCKET X for SCARLET DRAGON?

Assuming 'Motion Mount" is PL only.

This then also has ramifications for people with EOS/Nikon/Lomo/ Leica Glass ie it will not mount .

So upgrading to Dragon means moving over to PL Glass ...right? Could be wrong but thats the way it appears at the moment until specs are released.

So Dragon upgrade appears to mean & cost $9500 + $4500 + new glass ?

Everyone needs to look at the ramifications of the changeover in their situation. The cost flow ons of upgrade can be large. This isn't a problem as long as your aware of it & you have a business plan in place. But just thinking you can upgrade without additional costs would be very naive.

@ Jonas because Dragon is a new sensor and imagine hasn't been built with a "Shutter"
( I could be wrong but I suspect otherwise or why else offer the Motion mount )

.
endgadget article says it will be offered in Canon as well. hmmm

Wanted to thank the RED team for the great news, this is better than what I expected. Now which option to choose?

Definitely doing the full $19k upgrade from Scarlet to Epic Dragon. Very much looking forward to organising this ASAP.

Ah OK, good point - it was mentioned that you'd get the new black body... but then again, I wonder if swapping the chips is economically viable compared to just swapping out cameras? If the Epic production line is as well oiled as it appears, would pulling a Scarlet apart, swapping some bits, swapping the case and putting it back together really be worth it compared to keeping the Scarlet X, giving you an Epic and selling the Scarlet BT in 12 months... Either way, two exciting options.

Can we trade in a Scarlet for a discount on an Epic-X to Dragon upgrade? I bought a Scarlet and then an Epic-x and never used the Scarlet.

if not then you can do a manual discount which is just sell your scarlet via private party sale and use that money towards the epic to dragon upgrade.

Jared or Brent (or anyone at Red), it'd be really helpful in making the decision as to what upgrade option to choose if you could clarify whether or not if we upgrade the Scarlet-X to a Scarlet Dragon now, can we then upgrade to an Epic Dragon at a later date for the quoted $9,500? I definitely eventually want to upgrade to Epic Dragon and if there is no direct upgrade path from Scarlet Dragon I will have to upgrade to Epic-X now even though I would much prefer to be shooting with the Dragon sensor in the Scarlet Dragon whilst I build up funds to go all the way up to Epic Dragon. Would be fantastic to get a confirmation on this before pre-orders open on Thursday so I can make an informed decision before securing my place in the queue.

By the way, fantastic work all round and well done on figuring out a way to make a Scarlet Dragon at all. What a pleasant surprise!

2 Simple Options.

#1. Trade in your Scarlet to Full Epic-X (including new black body) - $9500. After that.. you can upgrade your Epic-X to Full Epic Dragon through the normal Epic-X to Dragon process.

#2. Upgrade your Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon - $9500 ( keep your grey body ) Get all the dynamic range and new color science of the Dragon with a max framerate of 5K 60fps. Full specs to come soon.

Pre-orders begin this Thursday. Upgrades begin July.

Jarred, 6k stills?

I should ask for everybody, is this 5k a smaller windowed frame?

What is the future of the Scarlet, are we to see a native Dragon Scarlet?

Thanks again.

Hi Wayne, this has been answered already a few pages back. It is definitely cropped at 5k (and below), though how much is not yet specified. Probably starting at 1.3x

+1

Jarred, someone, I need a number for 5K image circle on Dragon. Same as Epic MX? Or smaller?

Thanks

Mike
