  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Scarlet Upgrade Program

Once specs are out I think I'll go for which ever model can over crank more, Epic MX vs Scarlet Dragon...PS did I mention I LOVE you guys...
Pretty sure we already know the Epic will be able to overcrank more-- Jarred said the Scarlet Dragon maxes out at 5K 60fps. Epic X can do 5K at 120fps, 4K at 150fps...
The thing I'm waiting to hear is what's the max framerate at 4K on the Dragon?

And are the extra 3 stops of Dragon DR more advantageous overall than those awesome Epic framerates?

What amazing options to consider! Thank you RED!!!!!

This is the question.

Also remember, EPIC-X can do HDRx at up to 60fps @ 5K. That's still huge.

Assuming 'Motion Mount" is PL only.

This then also has ramifications for people with EOS/Nikon/Lomo/ Leica Glass ie it will not mount .

So upgrading to Dragon means moving over to PL Glass ...right? Could be wrong but thats the way it appears at the moment until specs are released.

So Dragon upgrade appears to mean & cost $9500 + $4500 + new glass ?

Everyone needs to look at the ramifications of the changeover in their situation. The cost flow ons of upgrade can be large. This isn't a problem as long as your aware of it & you have a business plan in place. But just thinking you can upgrade without additional costs would be very naive.

@ Jonas because Dragon is a new sensor and imagine hasn't been built with a "Shutter"
( I could be wrong but I suspect otherwise or why else offer the Motion mount )

Myself option 2 is sounding good .

There is a Canon version of motion mount in the works.

Motion Mount is optional. You don't need it.

No.

It has been said by Jarred and others that they are developing at least a EF version of this mount and I would assume that to mean Nikon and others are not far behind.

I have yet to ready anything that implies you need the mound for DRAGON. That's silly.

are you insane, you think the Dragon has no electronic shutter at all?? LOL come on brother, put down the whiskey. You do NOT need the "Motion Mount" in any way whatsoever

@ Brandon & William............... Thanks for clarification Canon Mount would be great (phew)......

However still need the "motion mount' I believe for Dragon.

@ Peter No not insane....... the 'motion mount' has been designed for Dragon so you're suggesting going for dragon without REds version of a global shutter . Sounds like Porsche with training wheels. & until someone clarifies you dont need it with Dragon, it would be unwise to think otherwise

Wow. Seriously man get some sleep. You think the camera has NO shutter ability of its own at all and you need an Motion Mount just to have a shutter? LOL!!!!!!

I don't believe you need the motion mount for dragon....check out the website, they're selling dragon with all their normal lens mount options.

someone mentioned $24,000 for epic dragon....it's not. it's $29,000 when purchasing new.

so if someone bought their scarlet brain new for say $8000, then upgrade to epic dragon seems pretty good price wise....$8000(for when you bought your scarlet) + 9500(epic-x upgrade) + 9500 (epic dragon upgrade) = $27,000 opposed to paying $29,000

That's Epic-M dragon. Epic-X dragon is 24,000
