  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- Proxy Module

I think this properly the best good news for the productions in Mainland China, come on show us more Mr. Jarred & Red Team...
you guys rock...

Really disapointing...
Why does it go thru HDSDI cable ???
Why do I have to buy mini SSD ???

This is not what I expect from RED...
At this price I can have 5 Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle with SSD... or 4 Atmos Ninja... for the same use...

Not interested...

No worries Quentin... we are more than happy to have you use a hyperdeck or Atmos.. and there are many others out there. This is just another option for people that want to have the module system integrated.

I think what we hoped for was a solution that goes further than the existing options. Beside price, there is a big demand for a proxy module which mirrors exactly what the epic records but not in raw, but in a codec like the ones included. Not having slowmo on this means you still have to shoot 5k or 6k raw if you just need 100fps 1080p prores slowmo. That would be the whole point of a red specific module... Is this something that can come with a firmware upgrade, as the module is connected through the back pins, or are these only used for power?

Clean feed?

Clean feed?

If its going through the cable I take it that it needs to be a clean feed like I send to the pix240?

if you want a clean feed you can send it.. or if you want timecode or whatever else is on your external monitor as an overlay you send it through the feed... which is what people should be using proxies for. Nobody should be recording 1080p proxy files to use for finishing.

But unfortunately they will.

And thank you for stating the point of shooting RED. RAW IMAGE CAPTURE. :)

It's important that you have stated the difference and in a sense the RED philosophy.

Ahhhh.

There's a category error being made by some people WRT what proxies are *for*.

RED is raw, raw is RED, that's the *point* and it seems some people still don't get that.

It's the main reason I'm *here*.

I know, I know. But it is just dumb. I can understand delivering 1080p today as thats what clients may ask for. Today. But the tomorrow that we have been preaching for ever is really happening... and you guys hafta be at least prepared for 4K re-delivery.

Did everyone see this? http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/07/sony-4k-tv-pricing/

The consumers are gonna start knocking on all your doors for 4K content pretty damn quick.....

If you could use a 4K domestic TV for monitoring, whilst shooting that would be cool.......

I don't have the same understanding, Alexa shooter choose ProRes for finishing, not just editing.

Question?????
What flavor Prores?
4444, 422HQ or 422LT?
2K, 4k, 6k? Oh I see only 1080P, HMM.
Is this Log or Linear(Redgamma3/Redcolor3)

No Jarred, nobody wants to deliver a proxy codec finished product. We wanted a module that would essentially be an on camera Red Rocket. Nonetheless this is a great START, but lets be honest, $2500 for a product that has less than half the functionality of a Pix240, hmm!

Agreed! You are absolutely right. I can't think of a single day I have worked on a project without going back to tweak the Raw R3D file. As much as I want this Prores module I don't want to loose access to my Raw files. What to do, What to do?

Is that the Jule box or is a real "mini meizler" (with iPad app support, maybe some wireless audio, TC or video, a V-LOCK, an extra EVF and why not a single lens control) still in the back seat ?

as far as the module Mark Toia dreamt about I think "this is not the droid he was looking for"...
