  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- DSMC FAN 2.0 Upgrade Kit

Now blowing all of this air through the camera brings dust build up over time, I guess we would have to take the camera apart after 2 years to clean it out right?

Every so often, usually before a gig or once a month and depending on how dirty I've been I blow canned air or compressed nitrogen through the vents.

If you've been in the desert for or something you'll get a nice puff of dust out.

Shooting in situations like that though I'd recommend cleaning the camera after each gig or before a shooting day. Basic camera maintenance really.

If you're curious, here's what I recommend to have in your cleaning kit:

- Sensor Cleaning Kit
- Pancro
- Kimtech Wipes
- Rocket Blower (the rubber bulb)
- Canned air, if possible canned nitrogen (doesn't create moisture when used)
- Fiberless swabs, some folks use Q-Tips.
- Electrical Tape
- Flashlight

Pretty much the same stuff I'd recommend to service any camera or lens. Nothing new here if you're an AC.

Don't forget RED's top plate 450$.

But the point is what is more efficient? Tests will tell.

I think RED's new Front fan is a MUST HAVE! Bigger = Better
and then choose your top fan solution as you like it most. ;-)

Pat

I don't know. I feel that there is already a front fan so if you only can buy one, the top fan is the one to buy... a more = better scenario. I think adding the top fan will help pull air through the body while the front fan is pushing. Rather stick with the one fan in the same location, I think I rather double up on fans than just upgrade the first one.

Only time and test will tell. I just know that when time permits, I'm going to get both.

Still no reports on these fans from the field?

I have some on their way to me likely this week. I'll let you know what's up and maybe do some dB measurements and specific operating distance tests if that's even needed.

I have ours now - plenty of data logged in side-by-side with the old ones. Executive summary: Noise improvement comes from the firmware, increased cooling capacity comes from the new fans. Heat transfer per db emitted remains constant with the old setup - which is not unreasonable of course, as its mostly governed by the heatsink efficiency and air path.

I may be doing something wrong of course, so I'll be sharing my detailed results once I run them past the dudes who know at Red.

I don't understand!! No improvement with the top and bottom fans???

That would be awesome Phil, ordered my kits last week.

Are you saying the new fans are just as loud as the old ones?

We really need somebody who has access to the fan upgrade to do some qualitative tests. With a new top plate and shipping its probably a $1,000 investment. There needs to be a substantial improvement. Does Red makes any specific claims on performance?

On a side note, producing a short film that we shot a few weeks ago....we got 2 Alexas donated for the production and I gotta say....SILENT!

Aren't Alexa's almost three times the size of an EPIC? I imagine the extra girth allows them to handle heat and cooling more directly.

Not what I said. Firstly I may be wrong, secondly the combination of new fans and firmware does indeed make a quieter more robustly cooled camera in general ... Which is what is claimed on the store.

Hello John,

Did you try the new setup with only the front fan?

My guess is that the top fan does hinder the airflow pass through the heat sink canal. The little top fan arn't enough big to push the increased air airflow through the canal (it's an assumption). I understand that putting max fan speed will improove the heat situation but it isn't pratical on shooting to have a cooler but more noisy camera.

The goal would be to have a constant fan speed at lowest fan speed setting for the best audio experience without overheating.

Pat.

For sure. I love the size of the Epic, its pretty nuts!

Sorry, I misunderstood. I just ordered two fan kits so Id be bummed if they weren't a big improvement. Ive noticed a big difference with the firmware update.

VIEWFACTOR TOP PLATE

VIEWFACTOR TOP PLATE

Just to put Viewfactor plate owners minds at rest....

Seems just as noisy in standby but importantly very quiet when recording.
