NAB 2018: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

The new pocket looks like a well thought out product. Ok, so it isn't beautiful.
But it has got a full size HDMI connection. Wow. Frankly, I see that as a really good thing.
I think a lot of people will be happy with it. Even if it doesnt really fit into a pocket anymore.
The large bright integrated screen and metering seems very helpful.
Like that they have taken audio into greater consideration too. Mini XLR ? Frankly, nice one.
With the dual/higher ISO that also spells good things for a more robust image in terms of latitude.
And that is definitely going to be helpful in getting away from some of the artifacting we have seen in the past.
Still a little bit concerned about there not being enough headroom in the highlights though.

Wow.
Hats off to the team.

My big problem right now is that there’s no good way to know how this compares to the Red Hydrogen One cinema module. Hoping there’s more information on that soon...

The big thing for me that I saw was that these looks to be false color in camera. That, plus decent pre amps and some of the other improvements makes this much more of a pocket camera in real world use. Less add-ons required to shoot properly with it.

Pretty expansive considering it does not have a holographic screen and the fact that you can not simply even make a phone call with it. :)

"Pocket" . . . for some perhaps

Exactly. That is all I want with Hydrogen1. Im blind in one eye so 3D has never been exciting or worked for me. An s35 4K RAW pocket RED is all I want and hope for :)

Mah, haw, haw.. Mah, haw, haw. It's alive, it's alive. Franken camera lives! (Funny, the auto spell corrector changed Frankencamera to Drake camera, which was a bit of a frankencamera which I advised on, and which's engineer had gone to BM to do a camera, and I was to come along if they did. I sort of live this camera, except for a few things, but I don't like the look.

Well, do super 16mm lens cover the m4/3 sensor?
Thanks,

Depends on the lens Timothy. M43rds users have been doing this for a while. Thete are some good fast new Japanese s16 prime glass out there relatively cheap. Have a look at 43rumors.com There should be a version of the triplet like in the cinema module, around.

Here's an old lens on a gh4.

"It isn't beautiful", do you think C?

It looks like the mutant hybrid child of a pocket cinema camera and a bmcc. Let's hope they can redesign this look before release, a lot. When they teased in the photo, who would have thought it was so ugly. We thought they were hidiing because it was going to look really great (at half that size) not because it looks the way it does.

Frankly, future proofing. Hopefully it will be the latest USB and the latest HDMI (the spec sheet leaves out which). I would prefer two thunderbolt ports instead, and carry a TB to HDMI adaptor with BM supplying free witjeach unit. The TB ports are bidirectional, allowing live video to be recorded and monitored from camera heads.

Adam, the Cinema module is likely to be very far ahead of this. The patent talked about 6k, and I suspect greater latitude and sensor.

Actually kind of reminds me of travel kit hairdryer from '87.

Well depends on how well those cooling ports have to work. But it is a shame to see them on there are all.

Anyway. By the time this comes out, fhere is a cx20 camera coming, a 7Dmk3, a pidsie sigma video camera, possible foveon like sensors from Sony and others, and the z-cam e2.

Many DPs will forego the Alexa Mini in favour of this..

hard no

this will be a student film maker/ wedding videographer / crash cam type situation.. not a "i was gunna use an alexa mini, but ill use the pocket camera instead" situation

Billy, thanks for that. It doesn't look too bad on my TV. Still if rather it be a lot narrower. It has camcorder dimensions. I like the Canon cx15/JVC 100/Panasonic hybrid concept camera shape. With this real-estate it would get rid of one side at least, moving the lens to the system, and maybe the gap between the Handel and the barrel. But would allow greater cooling from the exposed side. Would probably look nest, but how would it handle?

Blackmagic did a very good job with "Pocket" 4K based on 4/3rd sensor and lens mount.

It would be great if they've designed in the possibility of swapping out the sensor/lens-mount block in the future
for full-frame sensor and PL-mount, etc.

I think that one will be called something like "Ursa Maxi Pro"

With a speed booster, that's FF35 with an extra 1+1/3rd stop at 4k/60p raw with a copy of Resolve Studio for less than $2k? Plus 400 & 3200 native ISO? Seems pretty awesome!

Very curious to know how long it lasts on an LP-E6... If it's 60+mins, that'd be awesome!
