  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2018: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

this is like a studio making a sequel to Gigli. No one asked for it, no one wants it but, fuck it

Actually, you are completely wrong.
So many folks over at BMCuser have been asking for this, for years, that the only thing that is surprising is that it took this long to get here.

And frankly if you own Super 16 glass, the value of it just went up again.

Lol. They are doing annoucements the 10th my time. Give me a break. Posters now, NAB starting, waiting even more. But notice the new generation. I wonder if it is just going be a different form factor. Why was craft camera cancelled, letting BM breath.

Notice how they have matched what looks like a strap hole on one side with a similar looking switch on the other side visually. I have a feeling this is going look like one classic camera.

Hey, what are those ribs on the side of it?

I think it will be very successful. Many DPs will forego the Alexa Mini in favour of this. I have wanted the HD version for a long while for photography, but HD isn't quite enough resolution for me. Once my budget allows for new camera purchases, I'm going to take a closer look.

BTW in Australia, the value of the BMPCC on the used market has gone slightly up recently, and I don't know why.

Davinci Resolve 15!!

If it does 60p, it'll sell like cakes that are hot. If it's s35/30p, it'll also sell like recently baked cakes. If its 4k/m43/30p and sub-$1k, it'll also do well. If it's basically a 4k crop of the 4.6k sensor, it'll also sell like the aforementioned recently warmed cakes. Plus speed booster support...

Lots of potential.

It looks like the zcam E2 leaped it , at least in the specs...

Actually, I would expect that pocket customers have been satisfied Mike. If they had 1080p50+ and 2.56k I could have bought it. But seriously, it sells so well (a top BM seller I've heard) they could have custom ordered a 4k version of the sensor, even at s35, under the cheap understanding that the sensor company could also sell it elsewhere, 3 years ago. I've expected to see a pocket version of the paid for 4.6k technology instead. Once they hit 16.5 usable stops, I'll be happier.

The E2. There is something up. The spec sheet reads strange, the price stranger, the unit looks a lot bigger than the e1, like we are looking at a long length body head on, the quoted datarate on the lower end, and somebody in the article comments says he has spoken to the zcam guy and there are surprises coming.

As anyone at BMCuser will tell you, I am not a fan of the color "science" on BM cameras. I find it very "thin" (or dull) in terms of it's latitude, color seperation and correctibility (is that a word?). I got tired of trying to explain what I see coming from the camera if you don't exactly hit the sweet spot. (Every camera looks good in the sweet spot, it's what happens when you go under or over that counts). However, I have never seen such a bunch of defensive (and insulting) group of individuals. So disgusting, I just gave up on them. Why bother ? If you are a glutton for personal self-punshment try expressing a dissenting point of view over there.

However, to BM's credit they do try for better or worse to provide an alternative to the big boy's with corporate roll outs and I commend their smaller projects like this new pocket. I think if they have gotten rid of the artifacts from the previous gen, they will definitely have a winner, and I see a lot of film school students owning one of these and a "why not?" cam for the owner's of their larger camera. It's almost a lost leader which could turn into a nice litte profit center, if they can produce a really clean output from it.
