  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - SCARLET DRAGON

Thanks Nick...so when you bump down the resolution to over crank...does the FOV stay the same? I am assuming that it does not. Only have high hopes. That would be awesome...but unlikely.

Scarlet Dragon can do slowmo at 48fps at 5K...so FOV stays same at 48fps.

Scarlet Dragon can also do 60fps at 2.4:1 in 5K...so again FOV stays same at 60fps.

Anything "slower" would require a crop down to 4K or 3K yes, just as we do currently on Scarlet Mx.

Hope this helps!

No, it doesn't. It's the same as it is now. Check the red.com/tools site to see what's happening with sensor crops.

REDCODE™ 12 and 16-bit RAW :
1-48 fps 5K FF at 5:1 compression
Max fps (2.4:1):
1-60 fps 5K
1-75 fps 4K
1-100 fps 3K
1-150 fps 2K

So 5:1 compression @ 5k up to 48fps. If I use a mini mag would it make any difference, could I get a lower compression with the faster cards?

Cheers
Ian

Congrats Bob for the 1st shot ever (? ) of a Scarlet Dragon.

So they do exist............or is it an Epic with a wardrobe change ; ) !

All the folks complaining about the upgrade price vs buying new @14500 is not reading a very important fact that's right on the red site. The scarlet dragon being sold for 14500 is for the brain only. It's does not come with anything else. If you get the ssd side mount and a lens mount with it that will easily reach the $17500 price point. You are not getting ripped off or losing value on the scarlet mx you currently own by paying the 9500 upgrade price.

And the Epic X brain is $17,500

$17,500 > $14,500

Dollars to doughnuts, you net $3K and an additional year - 90 days warranty by upgrading to Epic X.

That's Epic-MX vs Scarlet Dragon.
Two very different markets.
Large budget features (and other projects) will always demand Epic.
Rental houses will always demand (and provide) Epic.
You get more then double the frame rates of the Scarlet!
Scarlet Dragon is far more suitable for low budgets, owner/operators, indies, etc...
You can upgrade the Epic to Dragon later.
As far as we know you can't upgrade Scarket Dragon to Epic (Dragon or not).
Chose wisely...

As a side note, it's looking like the non M/Carbon Epic Dragon brain is going to come in at $24K judging on the cost of Scarlet Dragon minus the trade up value.

The Scarlet Dragon pricing is going to have a ripple effect, so I imagine Epic X prices will come down to $14.5K as well...putting the price of an Epic Dragon brain at $24K

If not, Scarlet -> Scarlet Dragon is clearly the worst value of a generous offer.

I probably spoke poorly earlier, but what upsets me about this is that Scarlet seems closer to Epic now is performance, maybe too close - it covers many more of the bases that are really needed day to day - and I am concerned that this would hurt the ability of those who have invested in Epic to to recoup that investment.

(...) It would also have my rental clients looking elsewhere to get what they want instead of continuing to rely on us for their Red rental needs, which would not be awesome.

But we shall see….

Robert, these specs were announced over a year ago and have been posted at red.com since then, as I responded to you in another thread recently (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...g-EPIC-X-yet&p=1338600&viewfull=1#post1338600). You may not have been aware of it, but you are making it sound as if the Scarlet Dragon upgrade was something RED had come up with suddenly yesterday. I could have gone the EPIC path (same price as the Scarlet Dragon upgrade), but I chose not, and this very tough decision was made precisely because of the specs announced at the time. So, IMHO, your complaints (whether reasonable or not) are out of place and time.

In any case, if you are the "Top Cinéaste" you presume to be (I would say 90% of your posts seem to suggest it, apart from some occasional preaching on moral matters), you should not worry about losing your clients over us humble Scarlet owners.

cheers

I'm a Scarlet owner and exceedingly happy. There I just wanted to say that.

Back in 2011 I really wanted an EPIC but at that time the EPIC was $34,000 and no way could I justify that with the market I was in at the time. I could've taken a big leap of faith and borrowed money to buy the camera and hopefully paid for it and the interest with earnings but I wasn't happy with that idea, so when Scarlet was announced I pre-ordered, and my camera arrived in 2012 costing me $7950 for the brain only (I did buy a bunch of other things but let's forget about that). Over the EPIC I saved a solid $20000 and got a lot of camera for my money and joined the RED club.

Fast forward to today and I'm desperate to upgrade my camera. Why? Not because 4k RAW is old hat, far from it, just because I like shiny new things and my Scarlet has paid for itself. Trouble is, when I go to RED.com and see the upgrade prices I figure there must be some kind of crazy mistake. I can click a button and upgrade my Scarlet to EPIC for $9500. Wait a minute, I thought there used to be a $20000 difference, well not any more. They halved it. So I've had my Scarlet shaped piece of cake, and now I can order an EPIC two years later and pay less than half the difference of the price 2 years ago! Wow. Just wow.

Problem is, what if I want DRAGON? Well I guess I'll pay another $9500 to upgrade my future EPIC to DRAGON. Right, so that's a total of $26950 to own an EPIC DRAGON, having previously owned a Scarlet and then an EPIC.

I'm not a fanboy. But I do believe in credit where it's due, and the guys at RED are offering me, and therefore all of us, some seriously good deals as Scarlet owners and I for one want to say thanks. (Oh and please don't stop Scarlet > EPIC upgrades soon, I need to buy a new house this year before Wifey will let me get the upgrade!)

Stocked to see some footage! Specs are specs but I would love to see a ScarletD image :)
It's the same thing like it is with MX-footage. Grab a EPIC-X/DRAGON R3D-file (with new OLPF) and just crop it to 5k = Scarlet-X/DRAGON-image. ;)

I would like abit more technical detail about the scarlet dragon - compression ratios, best card options and is there anyway to get 50fps at 5k ff. The specs on the site are too vague for me to make an informed decision.

Thanks
Ian

I agree with this totally. Also with keeping the timeframe open for upgrades :)

I think that if you have ordered Scarlet Dragon upgrade and you now feel you would have rather gone Epic MX, then maybe you should talk to your Red Rep and see if you can change your order to Epic MX. Maybe you can?

Actually, I think this is possible. Back in December I think, long time after I had purchased the Scarlet Upgrade, I received an email from RED informing me of this possibility, that is, that I could change my option to Epic X. This was part of an official offer by RED, and not because I inquired about it.
