  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - SCARLET DRAGON

So tec specs are up, and I am just being impatient, but none the less I still remain not clear on this cameras possibilities.

Details as follows : Max Depth of Field Equivalent to S35mm (Motion)/APS-H (Still) lenses - does this mean the scarlet's 6k is smaller than epic 6k, or that they are only referring to 5k ?

Project Frame Rates 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 47.96, 48, 50, 59.94 FPS, all resolutions - Does that mean it can do 50fps in 5k ?

Finally there is still no mention of what compression ratios available and at what frame rates, also the impact if any of the mini mags on the compression.

I have a genuine interest in this camera for purchase but these points which I'm sure will come to the front soon enough are bugging me, there is a shiny button saying add to cart which i would love to press.

Cheers
Ian

When Scarlet Dragon shoots 6K, it can only do so at 12fps...but when it does, it's the same 6K as an Dragon Epic yes. Generally, 6K would be used for timelapse on Dragon Scarlet.

At 5K, the "crop" appears to provide a wider FOV than the current 4K "crop" we see on Scarlet MX, so that's good news.

cool, thanks Nick. That's one thing off my list. 5k= S35mm (Motion)

Cheers
Ian

Absolutely. 5K HD Dragon corresponds almost EXACTLY w/ 3perf Super 35 (6K Dragon, OTOH, is significantly wider).

4K HD on MX is more like ACADEMY 35 coverage, so Dragon Scarlet appears to have matured into a wider FOV!!!

You can always check this handy tool at RED.com to explore all the different RED resolutions:

I have been completely focused toward trading my Scarlet up to Epic-X but, with the release of these specs, I have to admit having second thoughts. Why, oh why, RED, do you make it so hard.

I can confirm you can switch lines, I did so in Sept... got an Epic... its a wonderful step up until Dragons and Scarlet Dragons are around

To be totally honest - if I knew last April it would take more then one year for the Scarlet Dragon upgrades to even begin - I would have opted for the Epic instead and use it for one year easily making enough money to buy a new Dagon Scarlet in addition to the Epic - and perhaps even pay for the Dragon update for the Epic itself. I can't get that year back. At this stage there isn't much point to switching...

Yeahh, I think you might be waiting a while still....

Maybe this is a dumb question, but with the upgrade path be available for the foreseeable future? Or will that part of RED's service be shut off?

I love my Scarlet to death, and I'd love to go Scarlet Dragon, but I probably won't do it in 2014.

Im sure there is a lot of us wondering this too.

Well, I finally made up my mind and ordered the Scarlet Dragon Upgrade. This is going to be perfect for my uses and I'm really excited. I was very tempted to go Epic, but at the end of the day, this just made the most sense from a business and financial standpoint.

And now I wait ;)

I went the upgrade path to Epic 9 months ago and soon discovered everyone was renting my camera, so it has made more sense, financially speaking, than waiting.

I could've upgrade to any of the choices offered and I have the money to do it but I haven't and I will not until I start seeing Dragon camera's in the wild and in the hands of mere mortals. Yes this forum is full of dragon in the wild but not in my neck of the woods & not by by mere mortals.

Plus the longer this takes the more options present themselves, also in todays camera world I will not pay to upgrade into old tech. So it is in everyones interest to get the rollout happening sooner rather than much later, ie next year, including my own.

P.S. I've never even seen a pic of SD in the wild (apart from Bob's snapshot from NAB) or even pics out of one , and no Dragon Epic pics are not the same as everyone who own Epics point out all the time.
