  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - REDLINK DEVELOPMENT KIT

Yep, accessing the gyro-data with this kind of resolution and accuracy is mind-blowing, many ideas come in mind, VFX, motion-tracking on top. But also stabilzing via gimbals. This data could also be helpful for the Andra focus-system.

Crazy!

Brings up a big question, why isn't there any software that uses this data for stabilizing? I mean it's in the meta-data for a long time now, software-developers actually didn't really need the REDLINK SDK. Why is there no plugin for Premeire or Nuke? And hey, stabilizing in RCX would be cool too... ;)

I'm not sure there was a way to access the gyro data before this Developer's kit was available. FAIK there was not. Have I been missing something? Has this been included in previous SDKs?

I'm not familiar with the SDK, but I do know that the cameras have been recording the gyroscope data to the metadata of the Red files for a while. I think this was announced in NAB 2012, or NAB 2013. Jarred just dropped the news on the forums, and prior to that, I don't think they had ever even said that they put a gyroscope chip in the damn things.

I am a little surprised that, by now, Nuke or others haven't done anything with it.

I'm glad to know gyro data will be accessible, as this has been my top priority for app development, in using gyro's for motion tracking. However, 3.3 times/sec isn't nearly as fast to get good results. I'll be experimenting with iPhone gyro+Red gyro to see if there's enough information to make something usable..

Exactly. And if i remember it correctly, the date gets refreshed and saved with every single frame.

Hmmm, maybe there is no support in the R3D SDK? Thats the only reason i could think of.

Even if there isn't "support", if the data is always around the same location, it should be fairly easy to grab and use.

The only reason I can think of to not do it, is that it would be a decent amount of work, and it would *only* work on R3D footage, not any other files. Especially since the Nuke artists I know would rather use DPX or EXR image sequences than R3D files. I wonder if they tried looking into using the data, found that the fidelity wasn't there to be truly useable for stabilization, and abandoned it.

You don't think that is enough for motion tracking? Hmmm. It seems sparse for stabilization on the fly perhaps, but it would seem to me that you could interpolate a smooth transition over 8 frames in post for either purpose... Not that more wouldn't be better. ;-)

Are you a programmer Zhibo? Could you write some Plugins perhaps?

I posed some questions to Heinle of Letus on the Letus Gimbal thread. Maybe he will jump in here.

I wonder if Red's ET crew are already working on something. If not, they should be. ;-)

Edit (4/21)
Scott,
The complicated part of a stabilizing system is the controller, not the gyro. A gyro goes for less than $50, which provides position data to be calculated by the processor inside the controller, which in turn distributes power to the motors until the system is stabilized. Well, it's more complicated than that, but that's the 40,000 ft level. So it's a lot cheaper to get a gyro that already worked with the controller than getting the handshake between the Red camera and the controller established. If Red integrates a controller inside the camera, it'll be different story. Hope I made it clear.

Very cool Z. If your code is as clean as your gear, your apps will be very fast. (I used your slider recently on a job for Chris.) ;-)

Scott, I was a programmer for 10+ years in my past life. I'm reviving that life for 2014 to jump back into some app development for filmmakers, especially now, with Redlink available.

Thank You Mikael and Thank you red........just had a minute to test Redlink bridge. It was too easy. Bought a license of Fool-control last night. Fired it up . Made an ad hoc network in camera. ( you have to be on beta firmware) App saw it no problem. Took 30 seconds .... This Connected to Mac Pro. Layout of fool-control is fantastic. Looks like you might be able to send feed out of decklink card into a small viewer window.? Can it Mikael. ? ,I haven't gotten that far. But you see the layout of the touchscreen and a larger menu with control of it all.

Nice. Just got my RedLink. Going to test the template apps provided.

Yes if you have any black magic pci or thunderbold device hooked to your mac it will enable the foolscreen features in the app. Then you have image preview and some frame saving option when start/stop recording or when you tag a frame.

I will upload a new version in a few hours with a great new save/load settings feature to quickly recall any parameter or set of parameters available in foolcontrol UI.

BTW might be easier to discuss in the app's thread :

Okay... I finally gave in... :)

And even so there are some ways to connect it off the back to the Brain thru Ethernet Adapter, I don't like it much that way... At the end I decided to sacrifice the XL Module which unfortunately hasn't worked as hoped with Gimbals, so loose a great piece of gear... And game an other... :)

Thanks not only to the Red team for this, but also to Mikael from Follcolor, one of the first to develop an awesome App... Follcontrol... Nice charing with you and thanks for the App... :)

I think DragonM8 new look is nice too... :)
