  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - RED SWITCHBLADE-M

The problem is if you are looking to place a mark near the optical center, like on the SSD Side Module on the Smart Side of the camera brain, is that it would land squarely on the LCD of the Switchblade.

It doesn't have to be optically centered, just has to be on the same plane. So even above or near the space for the directional pad could work.

How is the SwitchBlade powered?

Is there a little battery in it?

I see no cable going to it?

There's data/power pins if you remove your sidehandle, same applies to the switchwinderblademaster.

Yes, but a Side Handle needs batteries to work.

???

Or does the battery in the Side Handle only power the camera?

No it doesn't. It works just fine without a redvolt in it. The volt just carries power to the brain. If you run the brain + sidehandle via a V-mount or AB brick, or even AC, the sidehandle still works.

Won't this piece draw, from the Camera's battery as does the side handle??

Correct the Switchblade is powered via AC or Camera Battery.

The big difference being you can actually power the camera from the DSMC Side Handle and you can't with the Switchblade. As Isaac mentioned the DSMC Side Handle works with and without REDVOLTs.

Phil are you holding out and actually have an advance beta model and are not letting on:):) Gosh I need this little puppy yesterday!

I wish! That is the same picture I shot at NAB 2014. I played with it a ton while I was there just to get the feel of it. I have to say it's one of the most common things people ask me about since that showing. I really do think you'll see this on a lot of rental bodies for sure.

image.jpgLooks like there out in the field being tested.

As my workflow on set has evolved, I just sold my BELOVED DSMC Side Handle in favor of this Beauty, especially happy how it has already evolved thanks to the Updates via Software, it is really insane to see how much a piece of gear can evolve with just SW updates... RED rocks!!

Now lets hope I get it in time for our first Major Fashion Film in Milan... :)

One product suggestion to RED on the Switchblade: Can you provide the option to dial back the screen's backlight brightness. It can become distracting to actor's eyeline's.

Thoughts?

In 5.3 you can do this in:
Settings > Display > Monitor Control > Brightness

Note: this can be done via the menus on the camera or through the menus on the switchblade itself.

[Problem Solved] EDIT : You need to upgrade to a version of Firmware that is compatible with the Switchblade before you install it (in place of the side handle).

Is there something you have to configure before the switchblade activates?
Currently trying it with the EVF + latest Dragon Beta and Release firmware updates ... can't seem to get the Swirchblade LCD display to work or its buttons to have any effect.

Putting the side handle back on restores functionality again.
