  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - RED SWITCHBLADE-M

Anyone heard any news or even whispers on when the switchblade is gonna surface??

Jarred mentioned in another thread that most of what was shown at NAB 2014 was on target for a Fall 2014 release and for some items an approximate September 2014 release. Don't know where this falls, but I do know they have been working on it and testing it.

i find it odd that the switchblade cost more than the redmote, how come? isn't it complicated to build a redmote?
If it was the same price it would be a complete no brainer to get.

redmote $560
switchblade $950

Well Phil I hope it lands in Sept it makes the rig a whole new camera for my application and I'm ready when they are:)

The Redmote may be cheaper but is quite unreliable. If the switchblade is more reliable then the extra cost is OK by me.

Really want this for steady and movi jobs. Would of loved it for the feature I'm on now. Hoping it will come soon.

Still on pace for this Fall for SWITCHBLADE-M. As to price, this is a machined part.

Interesting, made of metal?

Is the REDMOTE that bad? Thinking about that since we are not using the REDMOTE wireless, is there a way to deactivate the wireless system to conserve battery for the camera?

Also, I'm sure they have to recoup some of the R&D expense of the new equipment - it will probably (hopefully) go down some after they've recovered from the costs of developing it.

Yes. It's made and machined out of metal.

Is this new to replace the REDMOTE and/or the DSMC side handle or both?! Thanks!

I wouldn't say "replace". I'd say alternative. It does mount where the DSMC Side Handle Mounts on the "dumb side" or right side of the camera brain. It is not a wireless device like the Redmote and is fixed to the camera. This is an ideal solution for those looking for a more AC friendly production interface that is also fairly compact.

I'm also a big fan of the +1 Module with a dedicated AC LCD Touch to perform some of these actions, but that's not always ideal, compact, or as cost effective.

Here it is on camera from NAB 2014:

This is actually something many people have been asking for and it's really cool that Red has come up with this solution. You'll see a slew of these on camera that live at rental houses.

Is it too late to request a small feature? Can you please out the optical plane marking point somewhere on the switchblade? This would be incredibly useful for marking distances for us when pulling focus with a tape or laser disto.

looks like no more space for that

Surely there's some space for a marking. Not having a mark is silly. Even the side handle had it.

The problem is if you are looking to place a mark near the optical center, like on the SSD Side Module on the Smart Side of the camera brain, is that it would land squarely on the LCD of the Switchblade.

Easiest (if you use a tactical top plate) is to use a hook or simply a long screw to attach your tape measure to it...

I have a little silver 1/4-20 "spud" that fits a tape for just the occasion.
