  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have to start production on a feature in march, but will be doing most of the shooting away from home in the country side. I plan on buying maybe 2 redmags at 256GB, but how fast does one fill up shooting at 24 4K mode?

I also saw one device posted on here that backed up 2 hard drives simultaneously, but shooting for 5+ hours a day would rack up some pretty massive files. What is the best method of solving this problem. Plus I don't know if I need a laptop as the middle man between the hard drives. I need to figure out a system that can work for a week or more on end without me ever setting foot inside a town, that would be the worst case scenario.

I know it's a very loaded question =(
I hope someone can help a brotha out.

It was made for the EPIC but can be applied for the Scarlet as well
 
What does RC stand for? Are those numbers the different compression rates? if so is that something I have to choose in the menu?

RC stands for Redcode, but you don't need to worry about that because it was the system used on RED One's and isn't implemented on Epics/Scarlets. Instead they use a more understandable compression ratio. The most common compression ratio I've found to be used by people here on REDuser is 7:1. Shooting at 4k with a 7:1 compression ratio on 256GB cards will allow you to shoot approximately 1 hour 40 minutes per card.

You can't really avoid the massive files when shooting on RED (you just have to look at it as a "perk" ;)) Also, I've never come across a system that can offload REDmags without a computer as the middleman. A good new Macbook can get 10 hours of battery life, but if you're using Firewire 800 as your offload interface it will take approximately 2 hours to transfer each card to a hard drive. After you take into account powering a bus-powered harddrive (since I'm assuming your don't have power) and anything else extra your computer does, you're only looking at being able to offload about 4 cards without finding a power source. I'm also not aware of any raid system that is bus-powered. This means you'll probably have to get comfortable with only having one copy of your files until you find some power and offload to a G-Tech G-Safe or some other kind of raid drive.

I just finished a feature film, I used 4 thunderbolt 12 T drives (2master +2 Back Up) total footage 20 T. With a MBP it all worked flawlessly (shooting with Red MX's) I should think you will need twice that amount with the Epics

The caldigit & G-Mini are good options. I did have an issue w/ a G-Mini crappin out of us. The G-Tech rep recommended using a hard wired laptop. Probably an isolated issue.

Sounds like you're set is totally off line, but if you have the leniency to set up a small genie, even a silent Honda 2000i, you can run that all day & power your off load system easily.

In regards to of loading time, you might want to look into a PC w/ eSATA ports which will expedite your off loading.

I've been using the DiskStation DS410 for critical backups and cannot say enough good things about it. Plenty of transfer options (network, FW, eSATA, USB) and a snap to use. Integrates easily into your network and has been rock-solid.
