  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2014 - DRAGONcolor and REDgamma 4

This is only RAW mode and its not something you are going to choose or have your clients really view.

Exactly. My point was that if RED uses it as their RAW reference, it might make sense to use it (or maybe even better a specific new RClog form) as a color grading starting point. Because since RC3 I didn't really touch it again.

Just to clear up. Does FCPX also work with the new color science? Is it also GPU accelerated now or does that need a new version of FCPX?

Not yet and not yet.

Hi guys, I noticed that RED had a Apple workflow installer updated (ver 4.0). DRAGONcolor and REDgamma4 in FCPX. However, dunno if it's GPU accelerated.

RLF is, as you know, very low contrast. That means the change in colour space is hard to see, especially if you're not viewing the RLF through a viewing LUT. If you are, then the change is more obviously especially on the yellow/orange/red range of colours.

Highlight rolloff and skin tone are all improved on the sensor side. Because you're looking at Dragon to Dragon comparisons what you're seeing is more of the improvements in the raw development side of things. If you do Epic to Dragon you'll see vast improvements in skin tone and highlight roll-off, which are only helped by this new colour science update.

Thanks Graeme for the great reply. Really appreciate it :)

So the highlight rolloff and skin tones can only be improved but on sensor side, so is it more a sensor based improvement (hardware) or the programming of how sensor is looking at the light.

Again I don't like indulging myself in too much to the tech side and only care how the image can look better than the competition. And as a rental company we have dedicate our investment in RED and RAW philosophy and pushing it too the limits in a small market like ours which is dominated by ARRI. I would love to see more natural rolloffs and it will help us tremendously.

Having said that, I love what RED has done with DRAGON (I still prefer shooting RED) and having better roll offs and skin tones will be awesome.

+1 for new RLF form :)

I do think it's annoying that I have to tell colourists that RLF is supposed to be cineon, but in doing so, at least I know they'll know how to work with the footage.
If you need to explain to the "colorist" the meaning of RLF, then I suggest you look elsewhere for your color finish.

RG4/RC4 is not showing up in a archive PP CC project- is it compatible for that or do i just need to load a new project and shift it to RG4 in RCX first?

I don't think it is implimented yet. There is a post from Phil about the estimated time frame.

FCPX works with DRAGONcolor and REDgamma4 with Apple workflow installer (ver 4.0)
That was pretty fast. Would not guessed apple would pull this off. Nice!

sweet, Phil- whats the link in question?

We develop the Plugin :) All our software was updated to support DRAGONcolor and REDgamma4.

Grading my last music video that has been shot with RC3/RG3 in mind with the new science. Awesome! What other camera offers such a bonuses? :) None. Thank you very much, RED team!

Hi Joel,

I mean that when it comes to Apple workflow, we maintain all those plugins. Adobe handles the RED support in Premiere.

Cheers,
David

Just decided to check out the beta. Always love the updates!! It's almost like a new camera every time. The HDRx view is great, I'll probably use HDR more because of this update, and the Horizon line UI overlay is great. But here's my question, any steadicam op's been able to play with the Horizon line, would love to hear how it compares to other lines.

Has no one reported that error, yet? I saw another thread or two... After using RCXp b30 for like 5mins, the only useable button is "s"... Everything stills works via the sliders/mouse, but you can't manually/numerically enter values.
