  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2011...

So is there going to be a RED Day event this year? I need to know what day of the week to be able to plan accordingly...

And speaking of a RED Party. If you have one (which I guess there isn't a lot of reason to seeing as you have a booth) How about throwing it early in the week? There isn't enough for some of us to do over more than 2 days.

I second (third?) this request - it would be great to know if and when there might be a RED "special event" so that we can plan our trip dates accordingly. I am sure I am not the only one who can't justify staying in LV for the entire duration of NAB. :cheers2:

I am sure you are right, but . . .

Last year we made purchases from the floor from some pretty big named companies.

Because, you may be right please don't ask for the company names. By the way they were not trying to hide the fact either. But, I wouldn't want to cause any harm to them.

I wonder if NAB has communicated clear cut guidlines about sales to their vendor?

We've sold on the floor for years with very little problem. The main concern with management seems to be that we don't look like a swap meet and that we handle collecting and paying our own sales tax.

P

Oooh. So wanted to go last year. Perhaps this year if I can tie it in with some special purchases and a bit of work, maybe a Reducation if we haven't received any of our Epics yet and learnt them inside out.
A bigger dream still: work with Tom Lowe on his "Timescapes" project.

As to the surprise thing, Jim you surely know how to push the big RED rampant speculation button don't you?

I'm really thinking the REDcode based delivery format from RedRay is going to work it's way into various distribution methods, great for online distribution and possibly a good solution for those 8K TV feeds NHK are planning and testing. Perhaps a RedRay like set top box for the home with disc or other physical media playback (& recording?) support, internet streaming, downloading and live TV decoding & PVR functionality all in one unit?

Red HMI's?

RedRocket2 - capable of realtime dual stream 5K debayer for Stereo 3D on one card? Possibly also realtime or faster encoding to REDray delivery format?

Whatever it's sure to be some crazy inventive new stuff that no one's thought of yet and I doubt it's a new camera since you will be showing enough of those!

Where are you going to be at? The NAB exhibitor list still does not show where Red's booth will be at.

I was searching a couple of days ago and didn't see RED listed at NAB but decided to go this year anyway (hoping RED would eventually get listed on the site). Hearing that RED is there with a booth makes my trip really special now! Looking forward to meeting so many RED users in person and all the great minds behind the Red Revolution that is about to explode on the scene this year.
My hopes about Jim's 'surprise' are for electronic RED lenses. I am more than ready to buy my first RED camera + package (Epic-S) and really don't want to stray from the source to get a set of primes at the same time. Any kind of list sign up or down payment accepted towards finally getting a Epic-S package to become reality would make me very happy and extremely excited about the rest of my 2011 year! I know it's coming but when the $$$ are down on the table it will feel that much more real.
I too would like to know if there is a special RED event or RED Day planned and if so when? This would help to get the final bookings in place -I'm there this year for sure!!!:cheers2:

Mr Jannard.
Please inform Us finally when the EPIC will be ready. We have some promess in MAY 2010 that will be ready for august, then december, now it looks like until NAB it will be not ready. Sorry but is very unprofessional as we do some calculations and promesses for upcomming productions. We waiting and waiting and waiting and in meantime we see only a lot of marketing..
Do u think is proffessional attidiute?
Best regards

Chill man ... after 75 posts you should know the deal by now. No complaining can speed up production or change what Jim says, except ruin the positive energy and excitement that's going on here :)

Hey Martin, Let me tell you a story.....
There's this guy see...
He's making the worlds best camera ...
It's a very difficult task ...
He insists that when he gives it to us, that it is perfect.
When it's ready, he'll let us know see ...
Now, cut him some slack ... OK.

Martin, Jim has said all along that expected shipping dates could change at any time. If you've been following RED for a while, you also know that Jim says everything is subject to change, count on it.

The reason for this is because they have elected in the past to have open development. As ideas come up, we get to hear about them soon after. The reality is, just like any company, stuff happens during development. We just never hear about it most of the time. RED lets you into this world, allows you to actively participate.

Is there a downside, sure. Customers like yourself may see a potential delivery date and hold them to it. Whether their method is professional or not is up to the customer base to decide, but something tells me they are not going to have any trouble selling cameras. They are a unique company in many ways and a lot of people like their approach. Others do not.

As far as planning goes, I've always believed that you don't plan projects around future technology. You base it on what you know for certain will be in your hands and tested before your project begins. That's just me. I would be basing upcoming projects around Red One MX with the flexibility to change to an Epic if it arrives and passes all tests in time.

wow.

Yea sure,
I do not get paid for positive energy, If u do not see the problem is strange.
Im running a company, we ready for 3d shooting, I have decided to do it on Epics due the size, i give up with other options and move shooting from atum to spring, but... sti the same.
It Is just a Camera, in not a toy , We use it to shoot movies and ern money, is a bussines. We reserve actors, DOPs, more then 100 people.
Now again Im not sure about the terms. I undastand that is hard to say when the product will be ready, but is better to say nothing than changing dates every 3 months.
If u buy a toy , is ok, u can play now ol later, but as i sad , is not a toy and there are some cases when not keeping the dates means more then just it.
I do not ask deliver it now, just please say some realistic date. Then i can decide to give up with that or wait.
Is strange that nobody else see the problem...

A typical "professional" policy would be to not provide any information on development and production of the cameras whatsoever, but regardless, the cameras are released as soon as possible and RED's generous approach to PR has no effect on this.

In other words, if you were dealing with another company you'd just assume the cameras wouldn't be available in time for your project and you'd find something else… so find something else. I think any problems people have with RED's PR are not RED's problems, but their problems. If RED could guarantee you'd have your hands on an EPIC in time for your project, surely they'd let you know. But they don't, and they're not going to feed you a line of bullshit. That would be… unprofessional, don't you think?

RED has always made their disclaimer about prices and availability very clear. If you wish RED would act more like the other camera companies, you can easily simulate this by not visiting REDUSER.

Is strange that nobody else does not see the problem...
Martin, the problem might be that you don't comprehend what has been stated to you for the last two years ... things are subject to change ... deal with it. When the Cameras are rolling off the assembly line you will be able to get one. Why not assume that you will have two by this time next year or earlier and act accordingly.

Sorry for all but that question was not for reduser members, it was for Red team.
Again RED team, please give some realistic date to start shipment of stage 2 program, whatever it is , april, march, or december. Is just fair and help to run the bussines.
On IBC I have seen already working EPIC so , on NAB again the same working EPiC ?
David, i do not run the rental company, I run production company and use it for internal purpose. Im lucky as i could pay a lot pf money for other producers for exteding the dates... And i do not think any internet forum exist just for "wow" things, i do crtitics as i get mad that again we will have just only "working Epic" on Nab, but not in my hand by april...

EDIT: If you make promises based on a camera you don't have, then it is YOU who are unprofessional. If you commit to a production without having a plan B, then it is your fault when the client is upset, not the fault of RED.

+1

*sigh and double sigh* :nopity: :emote_whack: :emote_head_explode: :nads:

OK -I'll stop now.

If you can show me where RED guaranteed Epic would be out by a certain a date, then we're all wrong and you're right. Otherwise, you're wrong. Period. Is it annoying? Yeah, believe me, a lot of people here can sympathize. But all this talk of professionalism… you don't appear to exhibit it. RED owes you nothing until they've committed to a date, and they haven't. If the world revolved around you and your company, maybe things would be different… but they don't. You've been given certain information and you can choose to act on that information however you see fit.

Sorry for all but that question was not for reduser members, it was for Red team.

Then send a PM. But I guarantee you you will not get a different answer than everyone else has gotten. Your question has been answered many times: they're not sure when you'll get an Epic. In other words, get another camera if you need an Epic soon. You can moan all you want but the answer is not changing because it's the truth!

"Sigh's" only make people hostile...the man is obviously a foreigner so his use of language unfortunately immediately seems like he's being more harsh than he wants to sound (I assume). We can still play nice. :)

Martin, you aren't the only one who has made the choice to continue to delay production of some sort so that the EPIC can be released.

RED has put themselves in a tough spot. RED came into the game to shake the industry up. Jannard, with his team, have not only revolutionary with the products they build, but also how they interact with us the customer. Many people have wanted RED to change their ways of allowing us to see the entire journey of the R&D of a camera. But if they were to do that, they'd have to take out a lot of fun they have by sharing their successes. While successes can be great, we the potential user of the product have to also be able to "roll with punches" with RED.

Apparently the "subject to change and count on it" is somehow not always conveyed.

Think about how badly you want your EPIC camera. Now, think about multiplying that feeling several times over and that's kinda what the engineering team and the family at RED have been feeling for years. When people say that RED is "unprofessional" because of the way they do things, it cuts deep and makes them feel unappreciated.

According to their last estimate, a lot of people should have an EPIC-X by NAB. We can look at that as good news, but we can't make production schedules based on current delivery schedules...RED has suggested us not to do so either.
