NAB 2011 Las Vegas - Hotel Recommendation

I just got a tip from Bloom about the MGM Signature, which has suites with open-air balconies overlooking the strip, so I booked one of those Apr 11-15.

I enjoyed my stay there last year. Bathrooms have large showers and jacuzzi tubs in them. Vey clean, well kept. I didn't get a room with a balcony though.
:001_tongue:

Wow, 11 minutes, now that gives you an idea of the size of that hotel - impressive... I was looking at all of the hotels you mentioned, but they're still considerably more expensive compared to other deals you get - I'm pretty happy with the rates I got, but hey, maybe next year I've made so much money off my Epic that I will stay at the Wynn... We'll see :)

Yeah it's huge but has nice good size rooms and also has alot to do on their premise; so I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It really depends on what deals are available. After staying at the Wynn, they now send me deals almost monthly for $100 a night rooms for Sunday thru Thursday and $150 Fri-Sat. Great thing about Vegas is that you don't have to stay at a hotel to enjoy it's amenities, so no matter where you stay it's always a great time just exploring other casinos.

my 2 cents on some what was mentioned in here. 2011 will be my 12th NAB and here is what i have learnned

Circus Circus .stayed 2008 be careful of Friday and Sat nite It fills with weekenders from LA that come in by the Station Wagon and Vanload. Winds up being wandering bands of teenagers milling about the place out numbering the adults 10 to 1 while mom and dads are off doing their thing. feels like your in the midst of a really wierd middle school with a clown there. Sunday afternoon they ALL leave and only adults left and its better

Imperial Palace ...stayed 2009. they have a hard rock night club in the front down stairs. unless you have a room in the very back on the top floor the noise will drive you nuts till 3am. we had guys that had to leave their room 5 floors up to get some rest. I was on the same floor and towards the middle of the hotel and could still hear it in the night ... endless elevator problems

MGM Grand ..(2006) love that place but its HUGE!!! best bagel/Lox in town is in the sports book downstairs in the front. plenty of great food

Excalibur -(1998/1999) almost the same as Circus Circus on fri and Sat but not near as bad. close to lots of stuff and the mono rail . ok food

Sahara- stayed there 2010 ... only good thing was the evening happy hour of 50 cent dogs and 1$ kamikaze shots ... food sucked ... half of the restaurants were boarded up. what was open was inedible, all of the attractions are shut down and covered with dust. go there to sleep only, everything else you will have to leave the property. it is on the mono rail it makes that easier. nothing decent in walking distance though

the Hilton is nice and very convenient to the convention center. I'm kinda peeved at them for tearing down the Star Trek experience ... so i have little else to say about them but the Cantina had a really nice margarita (surprisingly hard to find in LV)

Off strip we stayed at the Orleans several times - really kinda liked this place it was nice, good food, nifty little pub with a good variety of beer, good rooms. the trade off is you need rent a car or spend a bit of cab money to get back and forth.

buffets .. tried most of them all of them are almost not worth the money except the Paris or the Bellagio. Although the Paris "Ain't" as good as it was 5 years ago its still good. The Bally's and the Rio no way no how match the hype. The MGM was pretty decent. I can't remember which one it was, maybe the Riveria, had wine on "tap"?

take extra shoes and switch off between them from the exhibit walking to leisure time.
it may be easy to walk a mile from the hotel to the convention center in the morning but after a day on your feet in the exhibit halls it will be a different story to get home.

I would love to make it this year.
Is Red attending ?

So far we don't know - my guess is they will not be present on the floors as an exhibitor (not listed yet), but be omnipresent anyway... And there sure will be a get together.

At the signature, you can book a junior suite and save 40 to 50 a night. That's actually what I stayed in last year. You don't get a balcony though.

Yup...and for people suggesting to stay at the Circus circus so you can walk, the RIViera is between the circus circus and the convention center...so, Riviera is as close as you can get for walking distance.

I always walk from the Mirage in the morning, stop at the Treasure Island Starbucks for my coffee on my walk to the CC, and take the shuttle back when I'm tired. Or the monorail, which stops at Harrah's across the street. Oddly, I find a morning walk before I do the "convention shuffle" to be sort of rejuvenating. Good to stretch a little and get some of that fresh Strip air.... Mirage is also across the street from the Chipotle, so I can save a few bucks on food.

I stayed in Circus Circus one year and got a good deal but what a dump. I now call it by its real name: Never Again Never Again.

I'm thinking of going this year and have a few questions of my own. Where will I find the best:

Rooms
Bar
Food
Gambling
Live Music
Other Entertainment...

Not bothered about distance to the convention center - that's what limos are for;)

BTW I'll be with my wife!

I'd really hope that Red returns to the show floor. After all, with shipping Epics!!

Read Michael Webb's post above. It is accurate. The MGM Signature is very nice but beware, they are not that close to the Tran. I stayed in the farthest tower (there are three) and had to walk 18-20 minutes to get to the MGM tran station. They also added 20 dollars per day above what I negotiated online for a "club fee". Really pissed me off.

Last year stayed in the old part of the Tropicana. Quiet, but a slum. I believe they were about to renovate. The new part was acceptable. Treasure Island was also very nice but a little farther from the tran. Wait till we find out where Red day will be held. It should have a great Reduser presence.

For as long as I can remember we have stayed at the Stratosphere. There is great parking, good rates and it's not that far from the Convention Center. We always ask for the newer tower and the rooms are a decent size and clean. The disadvantage is the choice of restaurants. Basically just cafe's and family chains.

Thanks Frank,

Red Day, that's the term I was looking for early on in this post.

Will there be one in Vegas, when and where?

There has always been a Red party of some type growing into last years all day event. Whether they continue that would depend on if they return to the convention floor. They may well be considering that with Epic about to ship in mass. Should that occurs "Red Day", as me have known it over the last couple years, would be unlikely. They can't do two things at once. There will certainly be a Red gathering of some kind. Those details should be coming out shortly. One things certain. It will be an exciting NAB 2011.

I agree 2011 is going to be a great year. I have been at the last couple Vegas RED Day Partys and I will say I can't think of a way to top last year's, except of course, if Jim would have some additional news on Epic-S or Scarlet Interchangeable. I see Meryem has called out the Grand Organizer, Master Steve Sherrick. So perhaps it won't be too long before some kind of announcement is made about this year. We placed a lot of value on RED and its gatherings so we stayed at the Rio last year. There was a good walk from our elevator to convention room for RED. Rooms were very good, everything was under-reconstruction, like no food. That should all be completed this year, that is if RED has another Party there. We would do it again.

I think RED likes the off-site party format - it probably costs them less than floor space, I believe, and everyone can fit in the venue together - they can educate more people, faster with presentations. It's a lot more friendly than the convention floor, where they have to limit the numbers permitted in the booth.

This year, with scores of shipping cameras out the door before April, should be one big crazy party.

I wonder if they'll be able to pull together an EPIC-X reel, with some killer HDR shots - that would be spectacular.

I think you've sold me on one of those rooms Tom. Nothing wrong with getting some shots at night from there. Just as long as the room is facing the right way.
